If you were having a new kitchen, what colour would you choose?

I am looking at new kitchens as mine is dated and looking scruffy. I was thinking of an all white gloss modern look but there are such lovely colours available I wonder if I should go for something else. What would you choose if you could have any colour cupboards and worktops?

We had a new kitchen a couple of years ago and everyone i know with white gloss said not to do it !
Absolutely loved some of the colours available but i just wasn't confident enough that I'd still love them in 3,5,8 years time and we aren't looking to go through (or pay for) having a new kitchen again any time soon so stuck with plain, off white/cream units and neutral work tops so we can change accessories, splashbacks, paint and tiles when we want a change without spending too much.

@Moier beautiful kitchen. My house is a small terrace with a tiny kitchen!

Thankyou.
Maybe a lighter green then? White with a green tint?.
Keep windows clear to let light in and give impression of being bigger.
My first house was a terrace with tiny kitchen.. l actually had it bright red and white lol. But this was 1980 🤦‍♀️

We’ve gone for navy blue on the bottom and an off white on the top, matt doors, with a white quartz worktop. I see a previous comment about coloured ones on the way out, I think though it’s about what you like in your home.

I’d have loved a pink and navy kitchen but I was vetoed.

I don't understand 'on the way out' or 'dated' like its your home, unless you're going to be in homes and decoration on a monthly basis surely your home should be individual to you?

Dark blue has been “on its way out” for years… I went for blue because despite reading this, every time I saw a blue one I felt drawn to the picture. We had ours done 2 years ago and I love it. It feels fairly classic. We didn’t do it as a refurbishment and sell, we did it to make it our family home. We have so many compliments and it still makes me smile. Choose what makes you happy (but maybe avoid handless and gloss as they are a bit of a nightmare).

Mine’s dark blue too (3 years old), love it and never once felt I’m getting tired of it.

Think it’s just a ploy to make you feel you’ve got to do it all again.

Agreed, I mean some people like modern some people like retro some people like traditional.

It’s down to taste isn’t it, your home decorate it the way you like.

Having gone from a crappy, tiny kitchen with white + pale grey countertops to a much larger one with wood + black countertops, I'd say white all the way. Not shiny, shiny, gloss white but just normal sheen, washable white for both. And then you can do any colour you like on the walls (I like pale sage green, but have also had a light teal, sugared almond pink and beige), with other accessories in whatever finish or colour you like.

The large kitchen with dark countertops, dark flooring and wood units looks so dark, dull and scruffy, even when it was brand new.

The one thing I would say on top of that is try to avoid insets/angles/edges to collect grease and dirt in, so as little moulding or trim as possible.

Dollybantree · 24/10/2024 14:02

I’m another white shaker advocate. I’ve had mine (Tom Howley) 15 years and I still love it. I had it re-sprayed about 3 years ago from more of a cream-white to an off-white. I have a large island painted in dark blue. You can add colour to your walls and with blinds/accessories. I think the darker aesthetic can look great but i personally would tire of it quickly.

BetweenADockAndAHardDrive · 24/10/2024 14:04

We're about to redo ours and have discounted multiple options based on our experience of our (admittedly very old) current one. Gloss is out due to fingerprints and we don't want shaker style as we've found the recessed areas to be real dirt traps.

Had also been veering towards handless (as handles are gradually falling off), but might need to rethink that based on this thread.

So probably a Matt neutral colour (pebble or similar).

Or maybe I just need to re home some of my kitchen-destroying family members and then to buy the kitchen I'd actually like Grin .

Blueskysinjune · 24/10/2024 14:08

We have a white Matt kitchen and I find it difficult to look clean. Small hands, dog, general cooking mess and I need to wipe down the front of the cupboards every few days to keep it looking half decent. Also, my kitchen is in bright sun and 7 years on, I've noticed some yellowing on the white trims.

ffsgloria · 24/10/2024 14:08

We got white handle-less gloss 10 years ago, it's still looking pretty good. When I can do a new kitchen I would choose either ply or stainless steel. Totally depends on your preferred aesthetic, just go for what you love! I was watching a kitchen reno on youtube yesterday by Luke Catleugh which was beautiful - gold tiles and dark cabinetry - very luxe. Not necessarily my style but really suited the house.

I love bright colours so love these, especially the yellow - just don’t know if I’d be brave enough! I have cream gloss now and am so bored of it - although it’s been fine for fingerprints.

love these

Blackfluffycats · 24/10/2024 14:13

We have just ordered our new kitchen and we are going for off white with white quartz tops and wooden floor!

My kitchen had gloss white cupboards with silver handles and grey work tops. First thing I did was paint the cupboards, add bronze handles and fablon the worktops (which I know is a cheap nasty way of doing it but I'm poor and it's held up really well!) I think a lot of people on here would have liked the bland (imo) before lol

Annekasjumpsuit · 24/10/2024 14:15

I have matt olive green on the bottom and matt white on the top. No handles. Even with matt, finger prints show.

My kitchen is the same colour that they have in the last series of Derry Girls! I love that programme so was quite chuffed. Before that, my kitchen was white and about 25 years old so fancied something completely different. I love the colour so not worried about it dating.

scarfaced · 24/10/2024 14:16

Natural wood vintage kitchen.

i dream of this ❤️

Annekasjumpsuit · 24/10/2024 14:18

Saying that, i would go for handles next time.

MontySaucy · 24/10/2024 13:27

Do it!! A bright yellow kitchen would be so joyful and sunshiney!

I have a bright sunshine yellow kitchen. I love it. It makes me feel happy. Colour is not dated. Unless you are planning to move soon, pick a kitchen you like not what is fashionable.

Teafortwo01 · 24/10/2024 14:20

I had already decided to go for handles so I will stick with that. I am put off the white gloss now based on these comments.

Do not touch gloss with a barge pole, nightmare to keep clean. I have just ripped out white gloss and replaced with dark grey units and white quartz tops

kiraric · 24/10/2024 14:21

Forest green cupboards/white counters

Teal cupboards/white counters

Mustard/dark wood counters

I agree! We bought a navy Matt kitchen 5 years ago, I still love it! You get finger prints on the Matt though but marigold cloths are great for that

Ellsx6 · 24/10/2024 14:27

We're having this in our new home being built. We've had white gloss before and it was a nightmare really discoloured to so we've gone for a beige/grey sort of colour but still gloss as I prefer gloss over the matte we have now it looks nicer to me. We will also have a black stone sink put in to :) and spot lights in the kitchen/ under cupboard lights

Green was my second choice (and I would have been happy with it) but I'm due to have an orange kitchen with dark wood worktops fitted soon. The walls are a soft white, but there will be a green floor (wood in the dining area) with a purple splashback and it will be fucking marvellous. Oh, and with copper handles that don't catch on pockets and cuffs!

I'm not worried about it looked dated at any point. I know fashions change however I've wanted an orange kitchen for years and I'm lucky enough to be needing a new one when that colour is available.

Choose the colour and style that make you smile 😁 ( Although yes, gloss is a bitch to keep clean).

Ellsx6 · 24/10/2024 14:37

We have this in our current house. The style of the cupboards are a nightmare as get dust in the cracks and so hard to clean out properly and this type of floor tile is also a nightmare to clean😅
