If you were having a new kitchen, what colour would you choose?

I am looking at new kitchens as mine is dated and looking scruffy. I was thinking of an all white gloss modern look but there are such lovely colours available I wonder if I should go for something else. What would you choose if you could have any colour cupboards and worktops?

Matte charcoal

Matte is a pita

HurdyGurdy19 · 25/10/2024 06:29

I don't care about what's "in fashion" so just chose what I liked.

I have a shaker style in cornflower blue (in different lights it looks blue, or green or grey - like having three new kitchens in one 😀) with quartz worktops which are slightly off-white with a subtle sparkle.

If you are likely to move house in the relatively near future, then choose something a bit bland that won't have prospective purchasers thinking "right, well I'm going to have to spend thousands having to change the kitchen", which could put them off completely, or leads to low offers.

But if you're staying put, then have what makes you happy 😊 - you're going to spend too long in the room to feel "meh" about it.

Green was my second choice (and I would have been happy with it) but I'm due to have an orange kitchen with dark wood worktops fitted soon. The walls are a soft white, but there will be a green floor (wood in the dining area) with a purple splashback and it will be fucking marvellous. Oh, and with copper handles that don't catch on pockets and cuffs!

I'm not worried about it looked dated at any point. I know fashions change however I've wanted an orange kitchen for years and I'm lucky enough to be needing a new one when that colour is available.

Choose the colour and style that make you smile 😁 ( Although yes, gloss is a bitch to keep clean).

Please please please post photos of your finished kitchen when it's done. It sounds glorious 😍

Do it!! A bright yellow kitchen would be so joyful and sunshiney!

I have a yellow kitchen! And I LOVE it. Cabinets are oak and yellow, walls are dimity, floor is sage and cream tiles and the counter top is micro cement which is AMAZING! I feel so happy whenever I’m in it

edit: we went with naked kitchens for the door fronts, howdens did the carcasses, bespoke cement did the worktops (integrated sink and kickstands with no seams) and we ordered the tiles directly from Mosaic and did the design ourselves

I also loved kitchen by DIY Kitchens and Plykea but fell for the yellow

Iamthemoom · 25/10/2024 06:47

I have white gloss (fitted 10 years ago now) and I think it feels dated. I want to go modern shaker in a colour between beige and grey. Mushroom maybe. Sounds dull but I love that look.

I want a plywood kitchen made by Uncommon Projects and have different colours, probably a bit of blue / green / pink.

Love this!

Autumn1990 · 25/10/2024 06:51

I went for dark blue a couple of years ago. The doors have a wood grain effect on them as when the sample door was pulled out in the showroom it was covered in fingerprints!
My idea was I could change the doors a few years down the line if I got fed up of it but every time I look at it I love the colour.

hby9628 · 25/10/2024 06:55

Yeah don't get gloss. Pain for fingerprint marks

Also the same with black units in bathrooms.

We have both

I'm surprised at the number of people saying gloss shows finger prints. I had cream gloss with handles, no fingerprint issue.

Now have sage green matt with no handles. A nightmare. Constantly wiping fingerprints and it can leave a mark where it is wiped. Maybe it is the particular finish, suggest you try fingerprint test on whichever you decide.

Completely agree with this.
Even if gloss does get finger prints it's really easy to clean. Matte is not although I do love the look of it.

Lottle · 25/10/2024 06:59

Mine's bancha green. I love it but isn't for everyone! Slab doors. Easier to clean. Elemental corten formula work top and oak floor. Gold splashback instead of tiles.

QuantumPanic · 25/10/2024 07:04

Very smart @PrincessOfPreschool ! If I were to redo mine I'd look for second hand units too. Didn't know that was an option when we put in our kitchen a couple of years ago.

evilharpy · 25/10/2024 07:04

I had white gloss in the last house and never found finger marks a problem, it was easy to keep clean. I had a beautiful bamboo worktop and turned the offcut into shelves, still miss that.

When we moved here we had an oak kitchen that had seen better days, with awful beige tiles and a black worktop that I hated, but didn't want to rip it out as we only plan to be here a few years. So I got the units resprayed a light sagey green (Mizzle), retiled with white textured subway tile, replaced the worktop with oak looking laminate, and put in a white stone sink. Plus black handles and tap. It looks lovely, and has made me think that when we have a forever house I will have a wooden kitchen that can be resprayed when it needs freshened up.

I want to get my oak kitchen painted orange or green. But we’ve got black granite countertops (which I hate but can’t afford to replace) so I think that might look naff.

I think that the right green would definitely work with black granite.

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 25/10/2024 07:11

I went for a concrete effect. Love it. Feels like a bond villains kitchen.

DanielaDressen · 25/10/2024 07:13

I think get what you love,

I’ve had a light sage green kitchen for 20 years. It wasn’t fashionable or “in” when I got it, no idea if it is now. But I also feel because of that it hasn’t dated. I have cherry wood worktops which compliment the green.

i love that coral kitchen someone posted earlier!

kezzykate · 25/10/2024 07:17

My favourite at the moment is green but I would worry it would date like navy has a little.

HippeePrincess · 25/10/2024 07:17

I would never choose shaker again, it’s so awful to clean where the join is and collects all sorts really quickly.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 25/10/2024 07:22

Light oak cupboards and white quartz worktops, with apothecary style glass in the top cupboards. Hoping to do the kitchen next year so might have changed my mind by then!

camelfinger · 25/10/2024 07:24

I don’t think it’s the colour that dates on its own, it’s everything together. When I see pictures of dated kitchens that have been repainted and with new accessories and handles they still look dated to me. It’s the worktops, tiles, appliances, lighting, layout. I think with a larger kitchen it’s less of an issue; in a smaller kitchen it’s harder to get right. So as others have suggested, just pick something that you like now, and are likely to like in 3 years (time flies anyway). After a while everything looks a bit dated, but it’s the overall package that dates thing in my opinion, not the colour.

Dark blue has been “on its way out” for years… I went for blue because despite reading this, every time I saw a blue one I felt drawn to the picture. We had ours done 2 years ago and I love it. It feels fairly classic. We didn’t do it as a refurbishment and sell, we did it to make it our family home. We have so many compliments and it still makes me smile. Choose what makes you happy (but maybe avoid handless and gloss as they are a bit of a nightmare).

Exactly this. I have clients in my house and everyone comments on how lovely it is. If it's just for you, it doesn't matter what the fashion is. And you have a kitchen for so long it'll probably be back in again soon enough!

I think that the right green would definitely work with black granite.

What sort of green do you see? Olive green would work with our decor but might be a bit dark for the room, especially with black.

forgotmyusername1 · 25/10/2024 07:54

We got ours done in sage green. I love it

I love bright colours so love these, especially the yellow - just don’t know if I’d be brave enough! I have cream gloss now and am so bored of it - although it’s been fine for fingerprints.

Love the yellow

Teafortwo01 · 25/10/2024 08:36

So many lovely colours! And some comments saying don’t get white gloss and others saying it’s fine! I’m confused but not making a final decision yet.

We have a white gloss kitchen and I hate it. It looks like a dentist surgery.
