If you were having a new kitchen, what colour would you choose?

I am looking at new kitchens as mine is dated and looking scruffy. I was thinking of an all white gloss modern look but there are such lovely colours available I wonder if I should go for something else. What would you choose if you could have any colour cupboards and worktops?

B&Q have got a pink kitchen! Who’d have that?! Fine as a novelty but not to live with.

Katie Price?

@LoobyDoop2 I don't like handles because I keep on bruising myself on them in the kitchen. I have realised that every piece of furniture I've bought for the house has push doors, hidden handles or recessed handles (most MCM designs have unobtrusive handles so I buy a lot of MCM). And the house is early 20th century so have high up door knobs. The kitchen has big brushed steel handles, they look fine but I still hate them.

I've got an oak country kitchen and I love it. I know it's completely out of fashion and now most people have shiny glossy ones or pale muted shades but it suits me well. It was very expensive when I bought it and it feels homely. I've got black granite worktops and again I know they are out of vogue but I like them.

I went sage green with a heritage green island, composite white/ beige worktops and wood effect Amtico. I love it. The green is so relaxing. I sigh every time I go in!

A pale wood or white shaker style kitchen.

Lifelover16 · 24/10/2024 19:33

We have a tiny kitchen. Cream gloss, not too bad for finger prints. I like it.

Light solid oak

Like this. I love it

I'm just in the process of doing my kitchen. Gone for a pale cream and combined with a secondhand solid oak kitchen. I love this effect. But if I were going one colour, the pale cream is lovely.

You can add colour through walls, pictures, even tiles. But not the cupboards as certain colours will date (white gloss a few years ago, then grey, then navy and now green is the in colour). I've painted a feature wall in a dark green. Tiles and walls are relatively easy to change but a whole kitchen is much more difficult.

Oak tops, country cottage style units.

TroysMammy · 24/10/2024 19:45

I want white gloss with or without handles, not sure which as a new kitchen is a while off. I want baby pink accessories as I already have a microwave, kettle, toaster and a spatula in this colour. I don't want moulded doors because I can't be arsed to clean the grooves. No children is a godsend to eliminate fingerprints.

cunningartificer · 24/10/2024 19:45

We had a tiny kitchen in our last house, and we had cherrywood doors, terracotta floor tiles (original small ones), black quartz surface and tiny gold and black and copper mosaic tiles on the splash back. Antique cream walls. It looked really beautiful and I still miss my black fridge!

Sunnnybunny72 · 24/10/2024 19:47

Winter white.

user2848502016 · 24/10/2024 19:54

Don't get gloss, it shows every mark!

My kitchen is quite small and dark so would probably go for a light grey or neutral colour- current units are white so wouldn't want that again.
In a different house I would be tempted by sage green

SighTime · 24/10/2024 19:56

I'd just choose the colour your like the most and then when you want to refresh it you can paint it. It's so easy to do. The paints are so good these days that it's no problem at all.

I've got fake light oak bases and cream gloss high cabinets which I love. It's an expensive kitchen so the fake wood looks lovely.

One of my kids is having a new kitchen so I had a look around a big kitchen shop the other day. I was surprised at the Matt black finishes. I'd imagine they would be impossible to keep clean.

Ilovemyshed · 24/10/2024 20:00

We are going for pebble grey which is a soft taupe colour and suits our neutral decor. Worktops will be a limestone style quartz, appliances stainless steel.

Not gloss! It shows every little mark/finger print!

I would choose a deep cream - country cottage style units.

I'd say not matt for exactly the same reason.

Whitewolf2 · 24/10/2024 20:30

We had off white shaker style put in 7 years ago, with light blue butcher block splashback and to me it still looks bright and timeless. I’d chose it again now.

curlycurlymoo · 24/10/2024 20:32

I want cashmere

hideawayforever · 24/10/2024 20:33

I quite fancy olive green

spotddog · 25/10/2024 02:58

I'm surprised at the number of people saying gloss shows finger prints. I had cream gloss with handles, no fingerprint issue.

Now have sage green matt with no handles. A nightmare. Constantly wiping fingerprints and it can leave a mark where it is wiped. Maybe it is the particular finish, suggest you try fingerprint test on whichever you decide.

Copperoliverbear · 25/10/2024 04:58

I have just had white gloss, I love it.

autienotnaughty · 25/10/2024 06:10

Not white gloss again . !! I have to clean it all the time.

charabang · 25/10/2024 06:17

I'm a great believer in choosing something 'that makes your heart sing' so my kitchen is pink and cream. Very soft and very romantic. I've always been disappointed when I've chosen the sensible option or thought about resale etc... but for practicality I would shy away from a gloss surface unless I was prepared to keep wiping off prints.

HarrietBond · 25/10/2024 06:24

I want to get my oak kitchen painted orange or green. But we’ve got black granite countertops (which I hate but can’t afford to replace) so I think that might look naff.
