Do you hate fuelling your car?

I'm quite surprised by the number of MNers who say they absolutely hate filling up their cars. It seems to be high on the list of most-detested tasks. Those of you who hate it - do you know why you hate it? Do you also hate washing your cars, or doing other car-care jobs?

I like filling my car up - I have no idea why I like it, though. I'm not all that wild about washing cars, but I don't hate doing it - it's one of the less awful chores, even though it's a chore.

Not bothered about filling the tank, though not so happy about paying for it. I don't drive so much now so it's not something I have to do every week.

I like it when my car is lovely and clean, but I'd much rather nip to the hand wash place than do it myself. Annoying though when it rains a day or two later and you're back to square one. Nowadays I tend to let it stay a bit dirty because I have neither the time to do it myself, nor the funds to keep taking it to the car washers.

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 22/10/2024 18:38

I hate it because I have two small children so have to get them both out their car seats and back in again so it feels like a military operation for something so simple 😂

Thommasina · 22/10/2024 18:40

I never think about it! I mean it's just one if those things that gets done. On payday I always fill it up and take it through the car wash and feel grown up. Sometimes I buy a Freddo and eat it while going through the car wash. Happy days.

Why? Do you live somewhere that doesn't have pay-at-the pump filling stations?

Time40 · 22/10/2024 18:42

Paying for it is another matter, isn't it? The bit I don't like about car-filling is seeing those numbers whizzing around!

I don't like it, not sure why, maybe the smell of fuel?

I sometimes go to the place where they do it for you, bliss to sit there and just wind the window to pay.

Oblomov24 · 22/10/2024 18:46

I like it, always have.

FatOaf · 22/10/2024 18:46

I don't mind filling up the petrol tank as long as the filling station is fairly quiet. At busy times I get infuriated by people blocking everyone else because they insist on only using one side of the pumps, and by people going into the kiosk to pay when they could use the pay-at-pump. I realise there are some people who use cash, and others who need receipts and can't rely on the automatic pumps providing them, but surely most people can use the pay-at-pump facility.

GalaticalFarce · 22/10/2024 18:47

I really hate it and it pisses me off so much if dh has been in the car and could've filled up but didn't.
I don't know why I hate it so much.
I get on fine with most chores but this one annoys me a lot.

soupfiend · 22/10/2024 18:48

No I hate it. Hate stopping mid journey, hate doing it at the start of a journey (delays my start), hate doing it at the end of the journey (Ive finished driving now so want to stop), hate going out just for filling up (cant be bothered)

I will leave it until its being pushed along by fresh air before I fill up

teatimelover · 22/10/2024 18:49

I hate it because I hate getting out of the car when I'm trying to get from A to B plus I have two kids. I hate anything that interrupts my route with multi stops.

teatimelover · 22/10/2024 18:50

Also I wish there was Deliveroo for fuel .

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 22/10/2024 18:50

Doesn't bother me at all. It's just a normal, regular task.

Same as me. I dont know why, just hate it so much, never seems to be the right time. I happily swap it with my dh for any other chore (cleaning bathroom, mucking out pets).

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 22/10/2024 18:52

It annoyed me because there are no petrol stations on my usual routes so I had to go out of my way. One of the best things about having an electric car now is that I can fill up at home.

Have you no pay at the pump near you? I always used those when my children were small and never got them out of the car. It was a good long time ago now as my youngest is 22.

I don't hate filling up. It's just a bit of a chore when I would rather get home. I do it though, and before it gets too low. I don't run it much below quarter tank. Then I fill up and it generally lasts me about a month.

crackofdoom · 22/10/2024 18:54

Seems like a massive faff to me. I can't wait until the day when most of us have electric cars and we only have to find somewhere away from home to charge up on the occasional long journey, rather than a trip to the petrol station every bloody week 🙄

gwanmen · 22/10/2024 18:56

I hate it. After driving for nearly 20 years I still get worried I'm going to make a massive faux pas at the pumps. Put diesel in a petrol, spray fuel all over the floor, answer a call and burst into flames, park in a weird place, lock my keys in the car, forget to pay, the possibilities of my catastrophising are endless!

Blackberrybrandy · 22/10/2024 18:56

I used to not mind it but in my current car I HATE it.
For me it's part car and part circumstantial. It's a "modern" VW but I hate both the car and how it drives with a passion. You have to unlock the bit inside the petrol cap with the key. I just begrudge it fuel full stop.
It doesn't help that I don't drive past a petrol station most days so I have to detour to fuel it - the most local station is independent and the petrol last a noticeably shorter time than if I unnecessarily drive ten miles to the next nearest. My mental health is not doing great at the moment so it all just turns into an ordeal.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 22/10/2024 18:57

I hate fuelling up because Morrisons fuel cashiers always take ages to clear pumps so I'm left standing like a twat.
I've started to take it personally as other people come and go, whilst am stood like a simple woman who doesn't understand how pumps work.
Every f##king time
I do like cleaning my car though 😆

soupfiend · 22/10/2024 18:57

I would like cars that charge themselves as you drive along

I also wont go to any petrol station that is off my route, even a bit, it has to be on the road Im travelling on and also on the same side of the road.

I really really do hate it.

Viewfrommyhouse · 22/10/2024 18:59

I hate it because its tedious and miserable in this cold, windy weather. My car has a 90ltr tank and it takes aaaaaages.

Midwintermayhem · 22/10/2024 18:59

I don't like it, definitely because of the smell. I am happy with all other car related tasks.

Iheartmysmart · 22/10/2024 18:59

I don’t mind it as I like the smell of petrol and my car only takes about £35 of fuel so it doesn’t take long. Cleaning it on the other hand is a pain in the arse. Lugging buckets of water down a flight of stairs and across the car park is tedious. Can’t go through the car wash as it’s an ancient convertible that would probably disintegrate.

I always worry about the bursting into flames thing as well 🤣🤣
