Do you hate fuelling your car?

I'm quite surprised by the number of MNers who say they absolutely hate filling up their cars. It seems to be high on the list of most-detested tasks. Those of you who hate it - do you know why you hate it? Do you also hate washing your cars, or doing other car-care jobs?

I like filling my car up - I have no idea why I like it, though. I'm not all that wild about washing cars, but I don't hate doing it - it's one of the less awful chores, even though it's a chore.

I like a digital speedometer too so I know I'm doing 30 not 33 or annoying people at 27.

I don't think digital speedometers are that accurate. Legally, they're not allowed to show a speed lower than your actual speed, but they can show one up to 10% + 6.25 mph higher. So if your speedometer says 36 mph you might only be doing 27. I presume they are actually a bit more accurate than this at lowish speeds, but they won't be completely accurate.

People do often mistake precision for accuracy. If your scales show weight to 2 decimal places you're likely to assume they're more accurate than scales that only show it to 1 decimal place, but they could eaily be less accurate. If you weighed an item that's exactly 500 g on both sets, one might show 494.85 g (i.e. 1.03% lower than the true weight) and the other might show 504.2 g (i.e. 0.84% higher than the true weight). The latter is less precise but more accurate, even allowing for the fact that 504.2 g could actually be anything between 504.15 g and 504.25 g.

In a similar way, people assume a digital display that shows a precise number must be more accurate than one with a needle, but it isn't.

Yes, we've discussed that down thread. Or up thread. I mean for my comfort. I set cruise control to 30 and go. Then if I drive past a van, I know I'm going at 28 as per what BMW have set their 30 to be rather than wondering if I was going at 34 or worse and have a fine on the way. On higher speed limits I'll go a bit over. I've gone past a van at 78 and been ok. Unless the fine got delayed with the lease co which I live in fear of.

This was also touched on. They're not as far out as you have suggested - There was a fleet news article years back that showed what the specific difference was per manufacturer.

I could also set cruise control with the needle odometer but for the times I forget I can see the number instantly and reduce my fear or know i should put £100 aside.

At risk of a major thread derail, i had a look at the UK and EU regs for speedos, and there's a couple of things of interest. Firstly, the UK regs only call up accuracy above 25mph (where does that leave those reckless bastards like me who got done at 25 in a 20? Rhetorical, don't answer). Secondly, while the UK regs allow 10% + 6.25mph, EU regs allow 10% + 4kmh. Some difference. IMV chuck all those regs away and require digital speedos, +0% and stop daft excuses.

I hate it. I will run it low until the light comes on and then hope that DH needs to borrow it and fills it up!!

I don't know why I hate it, I just do!

MrsAvocet · 03/12/2024 13:13

We live in the countryside, it's miles to the nearest petrol station and I don't always pass one on my regular journeys so it does annoy me that I have to go out of my way for fuel. It used to be a mild irritation but since DH got an EV it really gets on my nerves that I have to actually go somewhere to fill my car and he just plugs it in at home. He gloats about it nearly as much as he did when he presented me with his de-icer and ice scraper, smug bastard.
