Do you hate fuelling your car?

I'm quite surprised by the number of MNers who say they absolutely hate filling up their cars. It seems to be high on the list of most-detested tasks. Those of you who hate it - do you know why you hate it? Do you also hate washing your cars, or doing other car-care jobs?

I like filling my car up - I have no idea why I like it, though. I'm not all that wild about washing cars, but I don't hate doing it - it's one of the less awful chores, even though it's a chore.

im a lazy fucker…dh does it for me

i haven’t done it enough times to say if i hate it or not…but i would probably hate it

4intheCorner · 22/10/2024 19:18

It's just another thing I have to do and add to my mental load. Keep putting it off until I'm on empty then I'm pissed I HAVE to get fuel. It's time consuming, pump is slow, can't be bothered to wait, too many actions, open flap, get out of car, pay at pump, add fuel, no receipt, scan card, etc etc.

I do like looking at the garage food though 🤣🤣

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/10/2024 19:18

The action itself doesn't bother me in the slightest, but the amount of tax being levied in a rural area with next to no accessible public transport makes me cross. I wish I could 'just get the bus' to work, but it would be close to half an hour's walk on steep and unlit hills to the nearest bus stop. Bugger that!

Dutchhouse14 · 22/10/2024 19:19

I don't mind it as long as I drive directly past the petrol station, if I have to make a detour then it's a chore.

LoquaciousPineapple · 22/10/2024 19:20

I don't hate it, but it's a hassle I'm glad I don't have to deal with now I have an EV. It's a faff when I have my son with me, as none of the stations near me are pay at pump so I'd have to go out of my way for that.

Nothatgingerpirate · 22/10/2024 19:21

Why?
It's just one of these things I don't give a second thought about.

Redplenty · 22/10/2024 19:21

I don't wash my car. Ever. Had it four years. Don't pay for it to be washed either. But I am in Wales and it rains a lot.

Fueling I used to dislike but don't mind so much now. I used to drive a variety of cars and didn't enjoy trying to remember how to open the fuel cap on that specific one.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 22/10/2024 19:21

I will leave it until its being pushed along by fresh air before I fill up

If it helps, I've seen some cars displaying signs indicating that they are powered by fairy dust, although I haven't been able to find any official info on legislated minimum calorific value or taxation level - might that be an alternative option?!

Negroany · 22/10/2024 19:22

I don't enjoy it. Not sure about washing it, don't think my car has ever been washed.

DreamingDaisies · 22/10/2024 19:16

I hated it, stinky, inconvenient and expensive, and always queues around.

Now I have an electric car and charge at home, problem solved!

Same.

I wouldn't like to go back.

FatOaf · 22/10/2024 19:22

I do, on the other hand, hate having to use air pumps at filling stations. Most of them won't accept my contactless card, so I have to pay from a different bank account. Then the wheels always seem to be positioned to make the valve as difficult as possible to reach. Then I can't see the display on the pump from where I'm crouching to inflate the rear tyres. And the 50p-a-go pump is always out of order so I have to use the £1-a-go one that also dispenses water, which I don't need (trademark Asda rip-off: they truly are the masters of high prices for low quality).

user1477249785 · 22/10/2024 19:23

I really really hate it. I can't articulate why. But so much that I literally bought an electric car to avoid doing it.

tigger1001 · 22/10/2024 19:23

I dislike it. Just a tiresome chore. And as others have said, in the morning on way to work, invariably I don't have time and on way home a detour in rush hour traffic when all I want to do is get home. There is a fuel station 2 minutes from the house but isn't open when I leave for work and is around 10-12p a litre more expensive than filling up almost anywhere else.

My bank card doesn't like pay at pump and won't authorise so have to go in.

As for washing the car - well that happens about once a year

teatimelover · 22/10/2024 18:50

Also I wish there was Deliveroo for fuel .

I'd love to see how they'd manage that: bringing enough fuel to fill a Hi-Lux tank on a moped!

ChefsKisser · 22/10/2024 19:24

interesting thread I never realised people hated it! Doesn’t bother me at all, takes 5 mins or less?! I don’t drive often as cycle though so max twice a month usually once maybe I’d be annoyed if it was more often. Can’t imagine hating it when there’s so many other chores to hate (putting clothes away, I’m looking at you…)

Jayfay · 22/10/2024 19:26

I plug mine in when I get home and it’s good to go the next day. I don’t hate it at all. I like playing beat the rate with the smart tariff though. Last month I managed to get paid to
charge it half of the time.

DrinkElephants · 22/10/2024 19:28

I hate it. I always think I’m gunna do it wrong and start pouring fuel over the floor or something! I also always struggle with unlocking the fuel cap! I always turn it the wrong way.

doodleschnoodle · 22/10/2024 19:29

gwanmen · 22/10/2024 18:56

I hate it. After driving for nearly 20 years I still get worried I'm going to make a massive faux pas at the pumps. Put diesel in a petrol, spray fuel all over the floor, answer a call and burst into flames, park in a weird place, lock my keys in the car, forget to pay, the possibilities of my catastrophising are endless!

Ha! The first time I filled up after passing my driving test at 18, a tiny drip of petrol fell on floor from the nozzle. I started weeping and ran to the kiosk guy who looked at me like I was unhinged. Which I was Grin I thought I was going to blow the place sky high.

I don't like it now but for a different reason in that we are rural and the nearest one is quite a way away so sometimes I would have to do a trip specifically to fill up, which is annoying. I now have an electric car alongside our family petrol one and that's much easier as I just charge it at home!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/10/2024 19:29

I don't mind filling up with fuel, it's doing the air in my tyres that annoys me. I have a front tyre that, despite putting entirely new tyres on, still loses pressure, so about once a month I have to go to the one petrol station that has an air machine. It also has an EXTREMELY small forecourt where I have to block several people in at the pump so I can use the air machine, and I can only get in there if it's reasonably quiet. So I get anxious on the way. Is the air machine going to be working? Is the forecourt going to be too busy for me to get in? Am I going to block in someone who's in a hurry and who gets annoyed with me?

We are rural and there isn't another air machine for 20 miles. I actually have an air machine that you plug in in the car, but it doesn't work properly and I can't read the pressure on it. So I suffer the anxiety instead.

OMG - I thought I was the only weirdo who felt like that, and ive been driving for twice as long as you!
And the mere thought of using pay at pump takes my catastrophising to a whole new level.

Recently got a new car, and have avoided filling it up at all so far for fear of doing something wrong. Luckily OH drives it more than I do and so far he has filled it when necessary.

Ithinkyou · 22/10/2024 19:33

I hate it! I love it when you find the rare attended petrol station, just pure luxury 😂

Hate all car related tasks tbh but refueling is the worst.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 22/10/2024 19:33

It used to be about 20p to put air in your tyres, but now some places charge £1.50 a time.

Still, I suppose that's inflation for you.

Choochoo21 · 22/10/2024 19:33

I dislike it because of the cost.

You can literally see the money being poured in as you’re doing it.

If I was rich then I wouldn’t mind it but I always fill up a lot at one go because I tend to go when there’s a queue and couldn’t be arsed doing it too regularly.

DoctorAngelface · 22/10/2024 19:34

I don't mind it a bit. It's definitely one of my preferred chores.

I quite like the atmosphere at a petrol station, all lit up at night.

Time40 · 22/10/2024 19:34

I love the smell of petrol

So do I!
