Do you hate fuelling your car?

I'm quite surprised by the number of MNers who say they absolutely hate filling up their cars. It seems to be high on the list of most-detested tasks. Those of you who hate it - do you know why you hate it? Do you also hate washing your cars, or doing other car-care jobs?

I like filling my car up - I have no idea why I like it, though. I'm not all that wild about washing cars, but I don't hate doing it - it's one of the less awful chores, even though it's a chore.

I don’t mind it as I like the smell of petrol and my car only takes about £35 of fuel so it doesn’t take long. Cleaning it on the other hand is a pain in the arse. Lugging buckets of water down a flight of stairs and across the car park is tedious. Can’t go through the car wash as it’s an ancient convertible that would probably disintegrate.

😂

I hate it because I have two small children so have to get them both out their car seats and back in again

Why? Do you live somewhere that doesn't have pay-at-the pump filling stations?

We never had pay at pump filling stations till very recently (actually still don’t in my town, only where I work but) but I never saw anyone carting toddlers in to pay, I certainly never did, they just got left in the car. Really useful if you need bread or milk or similar too.

I don’t mind it unless it’s freezing cold, it is fairly quick and cheap since I changed to a hybrid

WetBandits · 22/10/2024 19:02

I hate it, but I don’t know why! It just feels like such a chore.

My Mum is the same Grin

I hate it. After driving for nearly 20 years I still get worried I'm going to make a massive faux pas at the pumps. Put diesel in a petrol, spray fuel all over the floor, answer a call and burst into flames, park in a weird place, lock my keys in the car, forget to pay, the possibilities of my catastrophising are endless!

This has made me lol. I do always think about the diesel and petrol thing. They should design it so that diesel pumps will not fit into petrol cars.

😂

I never go to petrol station car washes because the rotating brushes damage your paintwork. I sometimes go to the hand car wash, and there are plenty near me, but the price can be a bit steep. They always want to do inside as well but I just get the outside done as I don't mind doing the inside so much.

Comedycook · 22/10/2024 19:03

I hate it .. can't really explain why...it's just a massive pain

nottaotter · 22/10/2024 19:04

@Iheartmysmart could you go to a petrol station that has a car wash you do yourself, the power wash hose thing?

MewithME · 22/10/2024 19:04

I hate it because I'm in chronic pain with my illness and I find my hand hurts after gripping for a while. Some pumps are really stiff. I look at the olden days when someone would do it for you and just think it so civilised!

I also hated washing my car when I was able to do it myself before I got ill. I'm a single mum, and just found it an exhausting task. Not tall enough to do the roof well. I have a lovely neighbour who valets now on mates rates. I hope he never moves.

BoobyDazzler · 22/10/2024 19:05

It ranks very low down the list of jobs I don’t like, tbh… until to comes to paying for it, anyway 🤣

It’s something I only have to do a couple of times a month.

dramalamma · 22/10/2024 19:07

I hate it cos no matter how careful i am, my hands always smell afterwards. Try to get dh to do it as much as possible

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 22/10/2024 19:08

I don't mind it at all. My fuel tanks so small it only takes about 3 minutes. As it's a hybrid I have to remember to press a button inside which is a mild annoyance if I forget. I have a fuel card so always pay at pump and don't have to budget. I live near 3 petrol stations and my job is out and about so it's no issue.

I only dislike it when you're in a rush and you see low fuel (even worse when you decided to leave it til the morning as you'd be organised and on time and then inevitably weren't) or when I had to pay myself and was living payday to payday and hadn't budgeted for the extra I needed.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 22/10/2024 19:09

I don't hate it. I find it an irritant in my life. I always make sure I go at a time when the petrol station will be quiet.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 22/10/2024 19:09

Other than the cost of it - which, to be fair, has come down quite a bit recently - I love the feeling of having a full tank and knowing that it's all ready for several hundred more miles.

The problem with pay at the pump is that it's mainly supermarkets that have it, and the ones near us that do petrol don't offer E5 petrol - which our elderly petrol car needs - so no good for us. That said, our DS is now plenty old enough to stay in the car on his own whilst I go in to pay - although he usually wants to come in too and ask for a bag of crisps whilst he's at it!

We have one petrol car and one diesel car, so I do find myself repeating the word "petrol" or "diesel" to myself, over and over again, whilst making certain that I've got the right fuel and grade for the right car!

Iheartmysmart · 22/10/2024 19:10

@nottaotter I’m not even sure if the poor old car could cope with that to be honest. Plus I have visions of me flying around on the end of a pressure hose getting everyone and everything soaking wet.

There is a hand car wash fairly near me that does a really good job and only charges me £20 for a full valet. Also had a Costa next door where I can wait so I don’t have any excuse not to go there apart from my laziness!

CoastalCalm · 22/10/2024 19:10

Loathe it , always thought delivery of fuel to home or work would be a great business idea but instead I just get husband to do it

AtomicPumpkin · 22/10/2024 19:10

No. I love the smell of petrol and enjoy having a quick look around the service station shop.

suburburban · 22/10/2024 19:11

Yes I hate it.

I don't wash the car either

turkeyboots · 22/10/2024 19:12

A trip through the car wash as an essential part of my small child management system. They really loved it so it was considered an afternoon out.
I have no issue with filling the car, but after my friend passed her test at 18, she managed to spray petrol all over her parents car, so I was nervous initially. Turns out she was just overly dramatic on how hard it was to fill a car.

halfbakedkate · 22/10/2024 19:13

soupfiend · 22/10/2024 18:48

No I hate it. Hate stopping mid journey, hate doing it at the start of a journey (delays my start), hate doing it at the end of the journey (Ive finished driving now so want to stop), hate going out just for filling up (cant be bothered)

I will leave it until its being pushed along by fresh air before I fill up

You summed up how I feel perfectly!
Hate stopping, feels like a waste of my time plus I can't help but buy unnecessary crap when in the shop as well.

mumtotwo11 · 22/10/2024 19:13

I don't mind doing it - but hate when DH uses my car and doesn't fill it up if it's got low and hasn't told me either so when I take it out panic as there's not enough fuel to get where I need and haven't left extra time for refilling 😡

FatOaf · 22/10/2024 19:14

The problem with pay at the pump is that it's mainly supermarkets that have it, and the ones near us that do petrol don't offer E5 petrol - which our elderly petrol car needs - so no good for us.

This is annoying. My mum's car needs E5, too. (Well, it doesn't need it, but the rubber hoses will perish over time with E10 because they weren't designed for it.) Most petrol supermarket petrol stations I use have at least one pump that dispenses E5, but that is another way that queues get caused as there's no way to make it clear to there customers that you have to use a particular pump and they're welcome to drive round you to get to others.

Thommasina · 22/10/2024 19:03

This has made me lol. I do always think about the diesel and petrol thing. They should design it so that diesel pumps will not fit into petrol cars.

I've thought that very frequently.

It's obviously far too late now, but if, in the beginning, somebody had just decided that all petrol nozzles and fuel tank openings would be square and all diesel ones were triangular (slightly bigger so they wouldn't fit into the square petrol ones), it would have saved so many people so much money and wasted time.

Then again, the fuel stations would make a bit less profit from misfuels, as would those companies who specialise in coming to assist drivers who have just realised their error!

godmum56 · 22/10/2024 19:16

I don't mind filling my car, i just go and do it. I HATE doing the tyre pressures as I can guarantee I will drop at least one dustcap and lose it. I now have a giant bag of dustcaps in the car which does help. I have never ever washed my 11 year old car. Once a year it gets washed when it gets serviced, the rest of the time the Weather Gods wash it. When I had dogs, I would vac it out around twice a year, now I no longer have dogs, the same nice man who washes it when the car is serviced, vacs it too.

DreamingDaisies · 22/10/2024 19:16

I hated it, stinky, inconvenient and expensive, and always queues around.

Now I have an electric car and charge at home, problem solved!

TroysMammy · 22/10/2024 19:16

I've always filled my own car but like dusting it is another chore I don't particularly enjoy. I do fantasize that nothing actually comes out of the nozzle and it's a big scam and we are paying for nothing. I also play the game of "dead on" too and feel quite smug I have excellent finger on the trigger control 😃.
