Do you hate fuelling your car?

I'm quite surprised by the number of MNers who say they absolutely hate filling up their cars. It seems to be high on the list of most-detested tasks. Those of you who hate it - do you know why you hate it? Do you also hate washing your cars, or doing other car-care jobs?

I like filling my car up - I have no idea why I like it, though. I'm not all that wild about washing cars, but I don't hate doing it - it's one of the less awful chores, even though it's a chore.

I live overseas and we can order fuel via an app and a small truck turns up and fills your car. They deliver 24/7 and you can schedule it on a recurring basis so I get mine filled every Sunday evening at 7pm so I start the week with a fuel tank. You can add-on services like car washing, tyre checks/inflation etc. It's a game changer!

Sounds good, but I'd be interested to know how often they put the wrong fuel in - considering that loads of people regularly misfuel their own cars that they've had for ages and know well!

Maybe they have something on the order site, where you have to click 10 times on various boxes that say "It takes petrol"; "honestly, I know it's petrol"; "yes, I'm sure it's petrol"; "definitely petrol, not diesel" !

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 23/10/2024 12:03

Wow, I had non idea that some folk hate fuelling their cars so much that they'd actually move abroad just to avoid having to do it!!

Time40 · 23/10/2024 12:23

It just makes me think 'yippeeee, I'm an adult! I'm freeeeeee!'

You know, you're right! This could actually be at least part of why I like doing it - it does feel very "proper grown up adult". I hadn't thought of that before.

Yes it's just a massive faff

I generally don't have my card on me
And The local Tesco needs a card as doesn't do contactless pay at pump
So I go to the jet which is fine but the cashiers always claim my free costa - as I never want caffeine -then I get resentful.

Also cold and need gloves or I feel conspicuous and self concours I will be seen. Weird.

Mairzydotes · 23/10/2024 12:49

I don't like doing it.

I only visit certain forecourts.

I make dh put air in my tyres. I'm terrified of letting my tyres down .
I considered buying a pump to do it at home but I live on a hill.

Did you know you can buy a tyre inflator thingy from Amazon for about £15 and do it at home

As I said, I have one. But as my car doesn't have a point to plug into it has to be attached to the battery, and the gauge isn't very accurate (so I live in terror of overinflating and blowing up my tyre!). I might look and see if I can find a better one with an easier to read gauge, but that doesn't really solve the problem of my car not having anywhere to plug it in (I hate having to lift the bonnet and fuss with the battery! It makes driving to the local garage look easy by comparison).

NetballHoop · 23/10/2024 13:24

I don't think I've ever had a car that didn't have a 12v "cigarette lighter" plug. What car do you have? I'll make a note not to buy one.

sanityisamyth · 23/10/2024 13:28

I'm driving long distance today and loving watching my fuel gauge. Put £40 of fuel in so the car was full before we set off but the range is just increasing and mpg is about 70. Had it on cruise control for the last 60 or so miles. Love my new hybrid car!!!

Rootatotoot · 23/10/2024 13:29

I hate putting petrol in the car. It is a real drag and to see the pounds rolling past (shudder). It's just an expensively annoying faff. My car permanently has the petrol light on much to my DH annoyance if he ever has to use my car (he has his own car)

kitsuneghost · 23/10/2024 13:41

I hate it cause I just want to get home

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 23/10/2024 09:10

Oh, yes, I remember them very well!

You just made it sound like it was a regular occurrence fir you personally!!

Not me though, I'm a diesel kind of girl

(wannabe electric, mind you)

OrlandointheWilderness · 23/10/2024 14:40

Hate it. No real idea why! I love having a full tank but hate kissing goodbye to £100 in a go.

ForPearlViper · 23/10/2024 15:43

I must be in a minority. I have no feelings regarding filling up the car whatsoever.

However, in my area I do wonder why our petrol stations are invariably situated in wind tunnels and usually have an ambiant temperature of 10 degrees lower than the immediate surroundings.

mondaytosunday · 23/10/2024 15:56

@MyBigFatGreekSalad are there no pay at pump stations near you?
I don't mind it OP, though I don't like the fumes. Hate checking the tire pressure though.

Ohhhthedrama · 23/10/2024 16:14

One of the wonderful things about living in North America, they pump your gas for you. I just pull up & tell them how much I want. Haven't done it myself for years.

jackstini · 23/10/2024 16:18

I hated doing it
Especially in the cold when the metal bit is freezing, or someone has spilled petrol
And it smells
And it's expensive

This is one of the reasons I bloody love having an electric car!

What’s the hill got to do with it?

It must be a very old car, I presume. 12v cigarette lighters have been standard for at least 35 years (probably longer).

Unless it's a kit car, maybe?!

the hill matters if you top up oil
no idea about air in tyres

Yes, obviously it matters for checking the oil but there’s no issue whatsoever with checking/inflating tyre pressure on a hill. Bizarre!

PepaWepa · 24/10/2024 10:04

Yes to all of the above. I hate having to take care of my car in any way, although I've no real idea why. It's just another thing to add to the list of things I need to do, I suppose.

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 24/10/2024 15:02

I don't like the home pumps for tyres. Even worse are the foot pump ones which are wild to me! DH has a plug in one and loves it but I prefer to use the professional pumps with a digital dial. His just has a needle that wangs around all over the place and it's a not very accurate way of knowing how much air you have in.

I like a digital speedometer too so I know I'm doing 30 not 33 or annoying people at 27.

I am in my late 30s yet still relish jobs that I always thought looked very grown up as a child, like filling up the car and doing the big shop. So yes, I love filling up the car (as long as the bloody petrol station is both open and actually has working pumps as we're rural). It just makes me think 'yippeeee, I'm an adult! I'm freeeeeee!'

Hahaha I completely agree! I remember watching my mum filling the car with petrol when I was a child and now I'm that mum and am apparently a proper grown up!

I get the same feeling when I use the cordless drill or mow the lawn 🤣🤣🤣
