TOTALLY inspired by Dame Jilly Cooper's 'Rivals' finally gracing our screens today😄

So what were you up to in 1986?

Just finishing my youth training scheme, enjoying the music 🎶 😀

Falseshamrok · 18/10/2024 12:36

Being born.

PickAChew · 18/10/2024 12:37

O-levels and pretending I was older in the pub.

BlueChampagne · 18/10/2024 12:38

Learning to drive with A levels in 87

MidlandsWoman · 18/10/2024 12:38

Doing fuck all for my A levels, painting and having fun. (Last 4 weeks of 1986: finally thinking 'Shit, I'd better actually do some work for my A Levels.')

MidlandsWoman · 18/10/2024 12:38

Oh, and I was jumping out of planes too.

Shallysally · 18/10/2024 12:39

Same here @PickAChew great times!

Sethera · 18/10/2024 12:42

Secondary school. I was pretty miserable for the last half of 1986.

refreshingseahorse · 18/10/2024 12:43

4th year at senior school. I'd taped my friends Jane Fonda workout record and had a brief spell of trying to feel the burn.

hildabaker · 18/10/2024 12:43

Pregnant with my horrible ex. He made it a really miserable time.

TheShellBeach · 18/10/2024 12:44

Having my second baby.

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2024 12:45

Best year ever for me! Was so much fun

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 18/10/2024 12:46

Final year in primary school - happy days!
Great teacher, great friends - think that was my happiest year of school

Scutterbug · 18/10/2024 12:46

Second year of senior school. I was struggling with my MH (nothing changes!) and things were really tough. Every school day I was full of anxiety and panic. I went on a school ski trip but had to come home as I felt so anxious. I had good friends so was lucky in that respect.

MorrisZapp · 18/10/2024 12:47

Walking past the combined newsagent/bookshop on the corner of my street, being inexplicably attracted and simultaneously repelled by embossed book covers featuring unlikely bums in white casing being felt by random hands.

WHAT IS THIS AND DO I REALLY WANT TO KNOW?

RaininSummer · 18/10/2024 12:50

Second year of my degree. Life was good.

AdoraBell · 18/10/2024 12:50

Working part time in a shop 2 years after leaving school with a few CSE’s. Living with an abusive boyfriend and wondering how the fuck to get away.

Luckily I did get out, changed jobs and eventually got out of retail - not that there’s anything wrong with working in retail.

LadyKenya · 18/10/2024 12:51

Loving my Madonna phase.

Spidey66 · 18/10/2024 12:52

19/20 (in July). I was working in my first full time job as a Nursing Assistant in an NHS unit for young people with learning disabilities. I loved that job! The unit shut in 1990 and the residents moved into community placements and I then trained as a mental health nurse in one of the big asylums, which again closed as I qualified.

I loved growing up in the 80s. There was a lot wrong-Thatcher, miners strikes, high 8nterest rates, homophobia etc but as a young person I was fortunate enough not to be affected. Loved the music, the films and the fashion.

CatsandDogs22 · 18/10/2024 12:53

I was 2, so playing, napping, probably throwing the odd tantrum…
