My hairdressers didn't know a spice girls song...when did you realise you were "old"?

I'm 39.
She's 21
She said "oh yeah I've heard of them but not sure on songs they sang"

Spent the rest of the two hours feeling like a fossil and mentally singing every song from their first album 😂

Knowing the spice girls songs doesn't make us old, it makes us have decent music taste.

shakes head in denial

Earlier this year when I told our conveyancing solicitor that I’d just been to see Take That in concert and she said “ooh my mum would have loved that!”.

Wonderballs · 16/10/2024 12:19

Hip young female barista “I like your cardigan, where’s it from?”
I named the shop.
”Thanks! My mum is going to love this for Christmas!”

When someone in my team who likes tennis had genuinely never heard of Andre Agassi or Stephie Graf.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 16/10/2024 12:33

Someone mentioned to me the other day that 1984 was 40 years ago. That made me feel old.

I don't know any of the Spice Girls songs, because I was in my 40s when they were around.

So there we are, you are now officially young again 🙂

brittanyfairies · 16/10/2024 12:47

I excitedly told my 20 year old son and his girlfriend that I'd got tickets for Kylie and they both said "who?"

JackJarvisEsq · 16/10/2024 12:48

the youths of my team didn’t know 7 Days by Craig David

They seem unusual. Kylie is still a major artist.

Echobelly · 16/10/2024 12:49

I felt a bit old when I started seeing adverts for gigs at Wembley or 02 where I had never heard of the artist even once! That was in my mid 30s ten years ago, though tbf that's just how things are as you lose touch with that kind of things and I'm fine with it.

TomatoSandwiches · 16/10/2024 12:50

A few years ago I volunteered at my DDs school disco and didn't recognise any of the songs until Grease came on and a much younger teacher said it was a golden oldie 🫠😂

They are wrong. I was born in 1984 and I am definitely not 40.

TheConvalescent · 16/10/2024 12:51

'Old' according to who, though? The people I take seriously are probably within a decade/a decade and a half of my age, up and down. Actually, no, my personal 'zone of influence' goes twenty or years older than me, easily, but I'm probably not that bothered by the opinions or Zeitgeist of someone who is 20 years younger.

afaloren · 16/10/2024 12:51

On Bake Off this week when Paul made a joke about Zippy and Bungle and the young contestant Dylan didn’t know what he was talking about 🫠

They're French, so maybe not so popular here. I've still failed as a mother though.

Funnily enough they both knew who Billy Joel was and were quite envious I had tickets

Now my hairdresser didn’t know who Billy Joel was when I was saying about having tickets…
I found that really weird.

CeeJay81 · 16/10/2024 12:56

Can totally relate. I'm 43 and one of my young colleagues didn't know what Indie music was. One of my favourite genres back in the 90s. When I mentioned bands including REM, he said he didn't know of them. 🙈

Ihopeithinkiknow · 16/10/2024 12:56

@HaddyAbrams How old are you then? It was 40 years ago but I have been sat here for 5 minutes questioning if I'm going mad lol

Snorlaxo · 16/10/2024 12:58

I have a 21 year old and she knows If You Wanna Be My Lover, Wannabe and Stop but I doubt she’d know their individual names.

TurtlesDoNotPetsMake · 16/10/2024 12:58

I put Kissstory on last week and didn't know any of the songs. Not one.

JFDIYOLO · 16/10/2024 13:02

My manager on my previous contract was born the year after I graduated.

😐

kingklong · 16/10/2024 13:09

When I found out a person I recently employed was born in 1991.......people born in the 90s are fully fledged adults!!!

Nah, not getting my head round that.

kingklong · 16/10/2024 13:16

When I was 20 my friend had a baby
That baby is now having a baby
That makes me feel old too
