My hairdressers didn't know a spice girls song...when did you realise you were "old"?

I'm 39.
She's 21
She said "oh yeah I've heard of them but not sure on songs they sang"

Spent the rest of the two hours feeling like a fossil and mentally singing every song from their first album 😂

When we started getting student nurses born the year I qualified! And when Paul Hollywood made a joke about zippy and Bungle on bake-off and the contestant didn't get it.

My daughter saw an advert for an 80s weekend and said "dad you should take mum to that"
I was born in the 80s but thanks. She also asked if I got an orange for Christmas and did I have to walk eleven miles to the well when I was little like great grandad did.
Son said mum you look like a 30 year old but one that smoked all her life. Again, thanks.
I found the spice girls thing very funny. I find myself saying to the kids, I was five when this was out. Back in my day....

I don't know any of the Spice Girls songs, because I was in my 40s when they were around.

So there we are, you are now officially young again 🙂

I don't understand this. I was in my 50s when they were popular. I still know most of their hits. Did you stop listening to the radio when you hit 40?

Ihopeithinkiknow · 16/10/2024 12:56

@HaddyAbrams How old are you then? It was 40 years ago but I have been sat here for 5 minutes questioning if I'm going mad lol

Sarcasm doesn't come across well online!

Obviously I'm 40. But I'm in denial.

Tunnocksmallow · 16/10/2024 13:58

When one of my younger work colleagues didn’t even know of the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

I think I died a little inside that day.

SameoldRodeo · 16/10/2024 13:58

The moment you say Kylie, and they think you mean Kylie Jenner 😂

Doggymummar · 16/10/2024 14:00

My 42 yr old friends daughter just had a baby and is getting married soon. I'm still deciding if I am mature enough for a kid.

Well your birthday could have been in November or December

Now my hairdresser didn’t know who Billy Joel was when I was saying about having tickets…
I found that really weird.

My hairdresser looked at me blankly when I said that I'd seen The Ramones live. Not so strange maybe, except she was wearing a Ramones t-shirt which is why I'd said it!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 16/10/2024 14:02

I was playing a game the other day with some of my classmates. We're all adults but I'm in my 50s and they all 20s. There was a question about William Wallace and I tried to help by giving them a clue 'Braveheart'. They looked at me blankly. You know, the film with Mel Gibson? Nope, still absolutely blank. No idea what or who I was talking about.

That's true. But 1984 was still 40 Years ago. Even if I refuse to accept it.

Cosycover · 16/10/2024 14:08

My 9 year old asked me if I had ever heard of 'this really olden day singer called Britney Spears'

skyeisthelimit · 16/10/2024 14:09

when my daughter told me that I was born in the 1900's . yes, she may be correct, but I had never looked at it that way. She is 2008. (I'm 1972)

On Bake Off this week when Paul made a joke about Zippy and Bungle and the young contestant Dylan didn’t know what he was talking about 🫠

Poor parenting 😉 mine were all born between 2012-2021 and are very well acquainted with Zippy and Bungle.

They always looked blank and clueless when other kids mentioned Paw Patrol and Octonaughts 😃

Singleandproud · 16/10/2024 14:15

I once tried to explain the concept of Pogs to a group of year 11s. I felt about 80 trying to explain tiddly winks. And the reaction to getting tazos/ toys in your crisps or cereal 'isnt that a choking risk, Miss?'
Pogs have got to be ready for a come back surely!

EveryKneeShallBow · 16/10/2024 14:20

My friend is soon to become a great grandma.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/10/2024 14:23

I went into a jewellers to get a battery for my watch. There was a customer sat at the counter looking at some rings and he looked up at me and said " Ah, would you like this chair" 😐

TentEntWenTyfOur · 16/10/2024 14:28

In 1995, when Love Me for a Reason was a new release (Boyzone version), my work colleague was humming the tune and I said I knew all the words off by heart. How come, she asked, it's a brand new song, and I couldn't possibly know all the words already.
I said that actually it was only a cover version of the Osmonds original, and she'd never heard of them.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 16/10/2024 14:30

@HaddyAbrams haha I'm usually good at spotting sarcasm but for some reason I started doubting myself and trying to work out how long ago 1984 was 😂 I was born in 1980 and I'm gonna be 44 in December so I was starting to wonder how old I was if you weren't 40 haha got my hopes up I might be younger lol.

Katiesaidthat · 16/10/2024 14:34

When my 6 year old was horrified there were no mobiles until I was a teen, and they were huge with antennas, and only the rich had them. She did ask me if pizza was around in that bygone era...I am 50.

DrizzleMySwizzle · 16/10/2024 14:36

when the queen died I said to a colleague:

'I wonder if it will be as crazy as when Diana died, remember that?

'No, that was before I was born'.

BunnyLake · 16/10/2024 14:40

Catching a glance at a music chart and not knowing any of the songs or artists. Back in the 70s and TOTP that would have been unthinkable to me.

MyNamesGaryAndImAddictedToChips · 16/10/2024 14:42

I asked my little brother if he liked ZZ Top and he said "Who?!"

Also this happened at least 25 years ago. Doubly old!

FuzzyGoblin · 16/10/2024 14:43

I’ve got a five year old who knows plenty of Spice Girls’ songs so I don’t think it’s an age thing.

Donaldfisher · 16/10/2024 14:45

I’m 38
I made a joke about the film Sleepy Hollow and my colleagues (collectively) looked at me blankly and confused. They had never heard of it. It transpired that they were all born after the film was released

and just this morning one of my colleagues said they had never heard of Sean Connery

Thankfully I also have older colleagues who make me feel nice and normal! 😂
