My hairdressers didn't know a spice girls song...when did you realise you were "old"?

I'm 39.
She's 21
She said "oh yeah I've heard of them but not sure on songs they sang"

Spent the rest of the two hours feeling like a fossil and mentally singing every song from their first album 😂

They don't know anything!

I was born in the 80s and I knew a lot about 60s and 70s bands. I knew about marilyn monroe.

I met a teen the other day who had no idea who michael jackson was

ImRonBurgandy · 16/10/2024 18:23

Kylie has a song out right now

What's it called?

I haven't heard it playing anywhere. And I listen to the radio a good bit.

ImRonBurgandy · 16/10/2024 18:53

And she has an album coming out very soon. Actually it's on Friday

ImRonBurgandy · 16/10/2024 18:54

DD forces me to have Capital FM on in the car which is the only reason I know

PuppyMonkey · 16/10/2024 19:17

My DD is 17 and knows all the Spice Girls songs.

I had to turn that new Kylie one up when it was on the radio earlier, proper banger. She also had that Padam out last year, which was a massive number 1 worldwide hit - that’s to PP who has missed this news.Grin

3 years ago I worked with a new teacher who was the same age as the first class I taught.

When I found out a person I recently employed was born in 1991.......people born in the 90s are fully fledged adults!!!

Nah, not getting my head round that.

People born after the millennium are qualified doctors. That really makes me feel old. I’ve been a qualified doctor myself for longer than some of them have been alive.

MagicianMoth · 16/10/2024 19:38

I told a much younger work colleague I had been to a Suede gig recently, she had never heard of Suede and thought I meant Slade. I mean, I know Slade is even older, but I suppose people know them because of the Christmas connection. (I'm in my late 40s , she's in her mid 20s).

TempleSpam · 16/10/2024 19:39

I included a Simpson reference in a class I was teaching to a load of Masters students (being down with the kids as I am) and no one really knew who they were.

Watching the videos online where content creators ask college students in the UK "what's an old person to you".

And they all say "someone born before 2000"

You mean "born in the 1900s"? Grin

Yes anyone before 2000.

They said "anyone born last century is really old"

redhatpurplehair · 16/10/2024 20:33

I don't understand this. I was in my 50s when they were popular. I still know most of their hits. Did you stop listening to the radio when you hit 40?

I know who they were but tbh I listen to radio playing songs of my era, so 60s/70s mainly.

Rarely listened to music after 40 though, more radio 4...

Oh I know, I was agreeing with you. It's when they refer to the 80s and 90s as the late 1900s, and you want to shout at them but then realise they're right that it's particularly awful. Grin

I think for me it was when I tripped over at the train station and instead of people laughing or ignoring it everyone looked concerned and several asked if I was ok or needed a chair.
But perhaps people are just more polite nowadays???

Grin

It also changes from "Dutchhouse fell over" to "Dutchhouse had a fall"

@Globules talk about rubbing salt into the wound😂I know, I know, I can't believe I've failed so badly, he likes French rap too - I may as well just hand in my parenting credentials right now. 😁Still, I have another son he might redeem me yet, he was always my favourite to be honest.

"he was always my favourite to be honest."

mrs Kylie has a song out now with The Blessed Madonna, it's good. R1 play it on their dance shows.

I think part of the 'problem' is that young people don't have a top of the pops or MTV so they have no idea what singers look like. Just click it on Spotify and listen while gaming or walking.

We have a friend, who we treated as a normal adult person, and then he came out with the fact he wasn't born when Live Aid happened ! Shock

Live aid is a long time ago!

Anyone aged 39 and under, weren't born when it happened.

Mrsdoyler · 16/10/2024 20:49

I was 1 year old when Live Aid happened.

Kids born in 2007 can have a drivers licence. That seems weird to me. Grin

I can’t even reliably name the Spice Girls, never mind their song titles. I was in my twenties when they were around.
