So DH thinks a 20 minute shower is perfectly normal

I can't understand what he is doing in there for 20 minutes Confused I don't consciously rush, but I'm in and out in about 5. Wash hair, wash body, done.

This is a very unserious post, we aren't falling out over it, but just for shits and giggles...do you think a 20 minute shower is the norm?

I can't stay in the shower longer than 10 minutes and that's if I'm doing everything, hair, shaving, exfoliating etc

Usually it's about 2 minutes and I'm done.

What are people doing for 20 minutes??? Or do I not want to know...

HermoniePotter · 09/10/2024 22:46

20 mins is my normal shower every morning, I don’t see the issue but our water isn’t metered, showers are at least half an hour every third day when I wash my hair. Baths can take anything up to an hour and a half, candles, iPad and a cup of tea are a must every night in winter topping up the water as it cools. If anyone moaned about how long I took in the shower or bath they’d be told to piss off.

Sometimes I just stand under the water enjoying it, on hair wash days I wash my hair twice then condition it. I have super thick waist length hair that takes ages to rinse then if I need to shave that takes time. I always use a body scrub too so that takes more time to wash off properly.

How does your face mask not just wash off in three seconds?

I put it on before getting in the shower, and I don't put my face under the water until I'm ready to take it off.

I can spend an hour in the bath so will quietly
leave this thread…

An hour in a bath is fine, because you can have boats and things. With a shower you are limited to singing with a makeshift umbrella.

honestasever · 10/10/2024 06:35

I would get twitchy about the amount of water I was wasting.

i think it’s a generational thing as we have become accustomed to more than one bathroom. There was 6 of us and one bathroom, getting out in the mornings would have been impossible!

It's not really up to you what people should prioritise tho is it? I assume you do things like watch tv or in other ways use power/energy for entertainment/comfort/fun purposes??
You personally cut back on water and heat usage by having shorter showers because it's not that important to you.. but some people enjoy longer showers.. how is that somehow more wasteful than watching tv or running an electric heater or boiling the kettle or any other hundreds of things you may do that aren't strictly necessary but you enjoy or facilitate enjoyment?
Let people prioritise what they want.
I like my long showers.
But I also only wash towels after several uses.. I only wash bedding once a month, use re usable nappies and sanitary protection.. and there's a lot more I do to save energy too they are just the first that spring to mind.
I don't think you should be dictating how long people shower for like if they use an egg timer it's gonna save the planet. It's just hypocritical and it's just not something you personally enjoy so you are willing to cut back on it coz it's easy to do that.

I'm not dictating, I'm expressing a strong opinion. You seem to be unfamiliar with the basic premise of online discussion.

Seems like it hit a raw nerve. I also do all those things, only wash things when they are dirty and also have solar panels and an EV. I'm not perfect, there are other area where I could cut back.

Having solar panels and an EV is not possible for everyone - cutting water use is much more achievable. Regular 20 minute power showers are ridiculous. It's not going to save the planet on its own, but not wasting water has a more local, visible and immediate effect in that there are likely to be fewer water shortages.

Yes, water companies have a huge part to play in this and they are appalling. But that does not stop individual responsibility.

A bath is nowhere near as bad as a 20 minute power shower for water use. Compared to what some are doing on the thread, don't worry about it!

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 10/10/2024 09:42

Who said they're worried?

Joycedelight · 10/10/2024 09:49

These threads always come up on here. I timed my hair wash shower recently out of interest and it was 7 minutes. Double hair wash and condition after. I've no idea how I would make it last 20 minutes. Literally just stand under the water staring at a wall? Not for me.

😳your shower head must be tiny to be able to shower without getting your face wet

DatingDinosaur · 10/10/2024 12:23

My time in the bathroom is about 20 mins. Only 10 mins in the shower though. Longer if washing my hair.

I reckon a few minutes getting undressed. A poo and a wank (get the shower running to hide the sounds). Then shower and shave. Few minutes getting dried and dressed. Yeah, I'd guess that takes about 20 minutes of "bathroom time".

minpinlove · 10/10/2024 12:48

I wash and condition hair and shower gel, wash body etc every day. There's a timer on my shower and it always says between 3.5 to 5 minutes. Rarely go
over! (it's a power shower though, if that makes a difference)

KimFan · 10/10/2024 12:49

Perfectly normal.

Gwenhwyfar · 10/10/2024 12:52

My actual shower is 5-10 minutes, but I'm in the bathroom for half an hour in the morning.
Is the water actually running for 20 minutes?

I don't just wash my hair and my body though. I also put conditioner, sometimes shave legs and pits and file my feet, then followed by body lotion. From time to time I exfoliate too and I have to squeegy the shower every time.

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 10/10/2024 14:33

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 09/10/2024 09:32

Don't use conditioner in the wash on your towels. A properly dry unconditioned towel is a joy as it also exfoliates as you dry yourself.
Also, steam in the bathroom won't help.
I open the window and door to avoid it getting too steamy, unless if we have visitors of course.

But I don't use fabric conditioner - my skin objects to it! And I paid a fortune to install the bathroom extractor fan, you better believe I'm using it.

I have a large shower head and I can quite easily keep my (tied up) hair and face dry while showering. You just angle the water at your shoulders. I can wash my hair without getting my face wet too, much to the confusion of the rest of my family.

Maybe try vinegar when rinsing the towels. I love mine with a bit of scratch so don't tumble dry them either.

Idontlikeyou · 10/10/2024 15:09

Takes me 18-20 to do the full works including hair and exfoliating etc.

A non hair wash quick one less than 5.

We’re a long showers house though, can’t have a water meter (long story) and our air source heat pump heats the water cheaply so we aren’t fussed about cost.

Barney60 · 10/10/2024 17:58

BlaiseBaileyFinneganiii · 08/10/2024 23:57

I'll never understand people who say they shower so quickly they don't even get wet by the time they've got out again.

Twenty minutes is perfectly fine!

agree with this.

StolenChanel · 10/10/2024 18:00

I could easily spend 20 mins in the shower. More if I’m washing my hair.

catlover123456789 · 10/10/2024 18:03

If I am washing my hair I am in there about 20 minutes. That's two shampoos and leaving in conditioner for a few minutes. On non hair wash days I am in and out. But as its getting colder, I am taking more long baths instead. However, our water tank is only 150l so it does run out quicker than a conventional set up which I believe is more like 250l. So if I want a long shower or a bath I need to check my partner doesn't want one in the next hour or so.

Amaksy · 10/10/2024 18:10

20 minutes? You’re lucky!
mine goes in with phone and iPad and it’ll be a good 1.5-2 hours at most. Thankfully he does school run so has to come out (most times not having showered yet).
