So DH thinks a 20 minute shower is perfectly normal

I can't understand what he is doing in there for 20 minutes Confused I don't consciously rush, but I'm in and out in about 5. Wash hair, wash body, done.

This is a very unserious post, we aren't falling out over it, but just for shits and giggles...do you think a 20 minute shower is the norm?

I don't time it but I'm guessing I spend 15-30 mins depending on my mood. Wash hair x 2, put conditioner on, stare blankly at the wall, scrub body, shave whatever is being shaved, stare blankly at the wall, rinse conditioner out, rinse body, rinse wall.

Ah my people, hello 👋

tattygrl · 09/10/2024 02:46

To the people with long hair here, can you really fully wash it in five minutes? I could maybe wash it in five minutes if I was really speedy, but I wouldn't have time to wash every else thoroughly then! People with short or no head hair, I understand a swifter shower.

rainfallpurevividcat · 09/10/2024 02:58

I have a egg timer from the water company that you stick in the shower which times four minutes, and it's well under when I'm not washing my hair or shaving my legs, with washing my hair it's bang on four minutes, perhaps slightly over with shaving. And I have long hair.

Twenty minutes is ridiculous, that's like four baths' worth of water!

Yes. Wet hair, rub in shampoo, rinse shampoo off, apply conditioner, leave conditioner on while washing rest of body, rinse everything. Four minutes.

And you sure know how to waste water! What a party animal. 🤔

Reading Mumsnet I really understand how the environment is fucked. People taking showers that use 4x the water of a bath and constantly washing towels, pj and bed linen after a single use.

Agriculture and farming represent the largest sectors in terms of water consumption globally. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), agriculture accounts for approximately 70% of the world’s freshwater withdrawals.

rainfallpurevividcat · 09/10/2024 03:13

That may be so, but it doesn't absolve the individual from using resources sensibly.

true , that i can agree with

MinnieMountain · 09/10/2024 05:53

I've got shoulder length hair. I take max 15 minutes if I’m shaving my legs, 5ish otherwise.

Our 10yo easily takes 15 minutes. I think he just finds the shower relaxing.

pinkfleece · 09/10/2024 05:54

5 minutes in the shower - can't understand people who take longer. Bath is different because I read, it's a relaxing thing. Shower is functional.

Zoflorabore · 09/10/2024 06:03

Mine takes at least 30-40 mins so 20 doesn’t seem too long for me, I’m quick, 5-10 mins if not washing hair or 15 if I am, I have bum length thick hair.

my 21 year old ds takes about 20 minutes also but the booby prize in my house goes to 13 year old dd. She has corkscrew curls and her routine is insane. She double washes and then double conditions and then applies this and that and that’s just her hair. She is autistic and I’ve tried to reason with her about how long she takes but she’s so bloody thorough, her hair is her pride and joy. On Sunday night her shower took 1 hour 45 minutes 😭

Barleycat · 09/10/2024 06:10

5 mins, 10 at the most and that's if I need to untangle my curly hair as well as wash it. A shower for me is functional and cannot see any pleasure in just standing there getting wet for ages. What's the point?

mrssunshinexxx · 09/10/2024 06:10

My husband has a sit down 20 min shower probs twice a day 😂 luckily he works away mon to Fri so it's not all on our water bill!

BadPeopleFan · 09/10/2024 06:27

I have a 15-20 minute shower every morning.
I have just woken up at 4.45am so I am not bloody rushing! It wakes me up, I enjoy smelling my lovely soaps and shower gels and its a pleasant way to start the day.
I can't imagine getting everything done in under 5 minutes and I wouldn't want to.

When the water companies stop wasting millions of litres of water every single year, I'll start worrying about the length of my showers.

Vettrianofan · 09/10/2024 06:41

Five to ten minutes for me. And that's for washing hair. Shoulder length.

Diomi · 09/10/2024 06:46

I think it is definitely within the normal time scale.

SisterMaryLuke · 09/10/2024 06:47

This is why Mumsnet is so interesting and enlightening. I've just stepped out of my shower, I washed and conditioned my shortish hair, soaped myself all over and did a very quick shave of my legs. This took me 5 mins. I never realised people could take so long in the shower, baths yes. Maybe when I have my bathroom refitted I will spend longer in there.

honestasever · 09/10/2024 06:51

You do realise he’s having a wank don’t you?

BananaSpanner · 09/10/2024 06:52

We’re a divided house over this. DH and DD are all about the quick shower. DS is like me and can spend ages in a hot shower. I’m not even doing anything for the most part, just standing there relaxing.

Garlicbest · 09/10/2024 06:53

Nobody's mentioned the efficacy of the shower. Mine's a tragic little electric jobbie that can't even manage a decent volume per second of hot water in the summer. As soon as it gets a little chilly, I'm directing my specially-chosen skinny shower head with tiny holes at 10cm squares of my body, one square at a time 😬 It takes about 5 minutes to get wet all over!

When I'm staying somewhere with a Really Good Shower, I stand in there for at least half an hour at a time, just relishing the luxury. But there's no way my everyday shower uses any significant amount of water or energy.

Mind you, I have to put the bathroom fan heater on while I'm showering because getting wet all over with a piddly shower means being covered in rapidly-cooling water. So I'm burning more energy to use my low-energy shower. Grrr.

NoraLuka · 09/10/2024 06:54

5 minutes for me, 10 if washing hair. I might have a 20 minute shower if I’d just been for a run in the pouring rain or something. We don’t have a bath but I’d love one, I’d stay in there for hours!
