So DH thinks a 20 minute shower is perfectly normal

I can't understand what he is doing in there for 20 minutes Confused I don't consciously rush, but I'm in and out in about 5. Wash hair, wash body, done.

This is a very unserious post, we aren't falling out over it, but just for shits and giggles...do you think a 20 minute shower is the norm?

How does washing your hair take 20 minutes?

how does washing & conditioning long hair not take 20 min?

shiverm · 09/10/2024 06:57

When I was I a kid I used to take ages in the shower. I remember often pretending I was in a tropical rain storm. Maybe he's doing that.

AlisonWonderbra · 09/10/2024 07:04

I shampoo my hair as soon as I get in the shower, then rinse, then condition and leave the conditioner on until I've done everything else, rinsing with cooler water immediately before getting out of the shower.

Even if I am exfoliating and shaving, it always takes less than ten minutes. I don't understand what you'd do in there to make it last longer.

AlisonWonderbra · 09/10/2024 07:07

Oh, and I have long thick hair too.

Gonegirl7 · 09/10/2024 07:07

5 mins if it’s a body shower. 20 if I’m washing my hair

BoobyDazzler · 09/10/2024 07:10

roseymoira · 08/10/2024 23:44

You can't possibly think what he could be doing in there all that time, no?

lol.

Well yes. Obviously.

🤣

NewGreenDuck · 09/10/2024 07:10

5 minutes. Wash hair, bit of conditioner on ends. Shower gel on one of those puff things, all over. Rinse. Do people still shave? I use an epilator so don't do that in the shower. But, yes, 5 minutes. I wash my face before I get in. Don't spend longer that 10 minutes in the bathroom. And I haven't had a bath in years!

StuntNun · 09/10/2024 07:11

It's apt seeing this thread today since yesterday I ended up changing the hot water timer so it doesn't come on in the early evening any more. My DS has long showers and I often can't go to bed as I need to wait for him to finish showering so I can get into the bathroom to brush my teeth. He won't be able to stay in so long if the water's cold!

Sandandsea123 · 09/10/2024 07:13

He’s having a wank, let him be 😂
my boyfriend takes 5-10 mins usually but sometimes longer.. doesn’t bother me. I have long hair and can be in and out in under 10 mins usually.. but sometimes like to stare into space / enjoy the heat /peace /do deep condition etc and so could be half hour - would hate to feel timed and pressured to get out!!

RachPelders · 09/10/2024 07:13

I'm often in the shower for 20 minutes but that includes washing and conditioning my hair, shaving and exfoliating top to toe and cleaning the bath and shower 😂

Does no one else clean their bath/shower whilst in there? 😂

mitogoshigg · 09/10/2024 07:13

Never spent more than 5 minutes in my life. More like 3 most days and that includes hair, shampoo and conditioner. I turn the water off if deep conditioning and shaving

AgnesX · 09/10/2024 07:15

Showers are practical so 5 mins or 10 if hair washing and exfoliating. I love the idea of a bath but get bored once I'm in so unless I'm shaving it's 5-10 mins too.

Cleaning the shower/ bath doesn't count. I suspect your DH is doing other things 😃

mitogoshigg · 09/10/2024 07:19

@Yellowsubmarineunderthesea

Yes this thread does explain partly why some people have £300+ a month bills, thankfully my household is well trained, 2-3 minutes for quick showers (men no conditioning) and 5 minutes for the full works

MermaidMummy06 · 09/10/2024 07:24

5 min max - and that's only if washing hair!

We live in Aus, though. We're trained from birth to conserve water. Even when the dams are full were careful because water is expensive.

ExquisiteIyDecorated · 09/10/2024 07:26

5-10 mins here, depends if I'm washing my hair (shoulder length, curly, products applied out of the shower). I don't shave and only use body scrub once a week or so. I do usually daydream a bit, if it was just washing my body it would probably be 2-3 mins. But we only have one bathroom so there is usually someone else needing in.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 09/10/2024 07:28

I can wash body, wash long hair, shave legs and be out in 5 minutes, if we're running late its 3. I occasionally luxuriate in a shower when kids are at XHs place and can stay in 20 minutes then.

NotEveryoneIsHelpful · 09/10/2024 08:06

I had 20 minutes in the shower this morning to think about this.
My conclusion..
Showers are for more than just washing.
They are for waking, and warming. For pondering, for planning, and for peace. Uninterrupted by kids calling your name, your phone pinging, or the dog barking.
20 minutes before the chaos of the day begins.
Unless he's meant to be doing something else in that time (in which case he needs to start earlier or be quicker) then let him be

ouch321 · 09/10/2024 08:16

Are competitive showering threads now overtaking competitive under-eating threads? There was one almost identical to this c10 days ago.

Bjorkdidit · 09/10/2024 08:17

Unless he has long and/or afro hair to wash and condition, anything more than 5 minutes is leisure time for him which, as long as you can afford the cost of extra long showers and you also get as many uninterrupted 15 minutes as he does, then it's fine.

But you commenting on it suggests there's an imbalance or it's not affordable. Is he hiding from family life? Each time he does this, when he comes out, breezily announce 'right, my turn' and shut yourself in the bathroom for a leisurely 20 minutes just like he's had.

Gingernaut · 09/10/2024 08:17

The clean up afterwards, with squeegee and bleach takes a good 5 minutes

SwedishEdith · 09/10/2024 08:17

bluecomputerscreen · 09/10/2024 06:56

how does washing & conditioning long hair not take 20 min?

Because you get wet, shampoo, rub scalp, rinse, apply conditioner, wash body with soap, rub, shave anything that needs shaving and then rinse conditioner out. That's a long shower session for me as wash hair about twice a week and shave about the same frequency. But even all of that would only be 10 minutes. Most showers it's with a shower cap so in, get wet, soap up, agitate and rub all over, rinse off and out.

I understand if people have thick and very curly hair that it might take longer but that wouldn't be every surely?

wildfellhall · 09/10/2024 08:18

My kids have epic showers on and on drives me mad, HURRY UP

RedRobyn2021 · 09/10/2024 08:18

I'd have thought 20 was fairly normal

I often only get 5-10 minutes and then I wash my hair once a week and shave my legs, which I probably spend about 30 minutes in there. Sometimes just standing under the water is soothing.

Wtfdude · 09/10/2024 08:22

Short shower daily, 20-25 min 2x a week for proper shower. Double wash, hair mask on, whole body proper scrub, shave what needed, ponder about life, singing Britney, hair wash, face wash. Then out and oil or body lotion and self massage, toenails.
So 20 min easy in a shower and then 10 min out of shower still in bathroom.
I forced quick shower DH few times to do this proper long shower and now he does that once a week to destress.

I don't see it any different to people who lkke to lie in batch for half an hour + (bar the running water).

Fifthtimelucky · 09/10/2024 08:33

I'm in and out in10 minutes even when I wash and my hair and shave my legs and armpits. If no shaving it's more like 5 minutes.

I'm now retired but when I was working I was out of the house before 7am. I wanted to be in and out of the shower as quickly as possible.

I sometimes stay in a bit longer if my back is playing up. Bending down and having the hot water fall directly onto my lowered back can help.

20 minutes is very selfish if you only have one bathroom and there are other people waiting to use it. It also uses more water and energy than necessary and I believe that we all have a responsibility to conserve those.
