So DH thinks a 20 minute shower is perfectly normal

I can't understand what he is doing in there for 20 minutes Confused I don't consciously rush, but I'm in and out in about 5. Wash hair, wash body, done.

This is a very unserious post, we aren't falling out over it, but just for shits and giggles...do you think a 20 minute shower is the norm?

The clean up afterwards, with squeegee and bleach takes a good 5 minutes

are you murdering people in the shower?

How does washing your hair take 20 minutes?

Lots of thick, long hair, so takes a while to wash out the suds if your water pressure isn’t amazing. Then conditioner which needs combing through. Then washing out, which again takes a while. Then putting curl creme/anti frizz products in. Easily takes 10 minutes even when rushing.

Add in time to wash, exfoliate, shave etc and you are definitely looking at 15-20 mins.

Five minutes for shampooing? The hairdresser doesn't spend that long in the salon!

It wouldn't take me that long to shampoo my long thick hair if I'd been dragged through a mud heap first.

My hairdresser does take that long. Maybe some people’s hair takes longer to wash than others?

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 09/10/2024 18:38

I don't understand " if" washing hair?
You're already in the shower.. so why wouldn't you wash your hair? Is it because it's long?
About 15 to 20 mins for me.
I have a wet room and chair.
Wash hair.. rinse.. put conditioner on and leave it while l get sponge and soap body... sit for a bit with hot water running on pain area.
Rinse conditioner.
Takes a while to get dried.

User364837 · 09/10/2024 18:40

also let’s not forget what men sometimes do in the shower. Can be the cleanest place for it and also private 🤷‍♀️

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 09/10/2024 18:42

It's about luxuriating in the shower, letting the water run over you and switching off from the world. Not rushing and not just a means to an end.
Sometimes I'll turn the shower off but take my time lathering up, in-between each toe sort of thing and back for round two.

Funnily, I used to be a 5 minute'r but went on the other side and never going back.

Can also easily spend an hour in the bath.

You can't possibly think what he could be doing in there all that time, no?

whatever men would do there.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 09/10/2024 18:46

I clock under 2 mins because 2 mins was all I was allowed for so long that it is now engrained.

AlisonWonderbra · 09/10/2024 18:50

My hair doesn't need washing every day. I usually wash it every other day, but sometimes every third day and I do two washes and condition it. My hair is waist length and reasonably thick, but I would wash it daily if it was needed.

Why would you wash your hair every day if you don't need to? It's not good for it and drying it is a faff.

HappyToSmile · 09/10/2024 18:56

I love the idea of a long shower or bath, but in reality, I get bored and am in and out as soon as everything is wet, washed and rinsed. A bath takes me longer to run than it does to sit in!

You can tell yourself that all you like, but of course it makes a difference if millions of people are using 75l of water instead of 300l every time they have a shower.

Water companies waste three billion litres of water per day in this country.

Someone having a 20 minute shower is not the problem here.

JLT24 · 09/10/2024 19:09

20 minutes means a rushed shower for my DH, drives me bonkers.

I’m 2 mins for a quick wash
5 mins for hair
5 mins to shave

Depending on the day

mm81736 · 09/10/2024 19:22

Shampoo hair twice, leave on conditioner. I use soap so lather up the sponge or pouffe thing scrub, arms ,feet and legs to exfoliate. Then something with long handled brush to scrub back. Then good clean for food bum, skin foldsvand pits. After that thoroughly rinse conditioner put and comb through.
I other switch off the shower towel dry in the warmth and sometimes apply powder in there top to contain the mess.some days clean the shower before the drying stage. If I shave anywhere it's even longer.Dont know hiw people do it in 5 minutes!

Delia65 · 09/10/2024 19:42

20 mins? Definitely he'll be having a wank...

Some rough maths - an average shower uses 12 litres of water per minute. A 20 minute shower uses 240 litres.
There are 70 million people in the country. If 20 million of those have a daily shower, and half of those are 20 minute shower takers, that's 10 million x 240 litres which is 2.4 billion litres. Almost the same as the water companies.

Wait, people put curl cream, etc, on IN THE SHOWER? This whole thread is a revelation.

Yep, my gel goes on soaking wet hair so it's less messy to do it while I'm in the shower then rinse the shower down

honestasever · 09/10/2024 22:18

20 mins to wash hair?

What are you, a Yeti?

Not under running water, obviously. But yes, it needs to be applied to soaking wet hair, and needs combing through, which is messy, and the comb, my hands and my shoulders then need a rinse, so it’s easier to do it in the shower cubicle than on the bath mat.

Purposefullyporous · 09/10/2024 22:37

rainfallpurevividcat · 09/10/2024 03:13

That may be so, but it doesn't absolve the individual from using resources sensibly.

It's not really up to you what people should prioritise tho is it? I assume you do things like watch tv or in other ways use power/energy for entertainment/comfort/fun purposes??
You personally cut back on water and heat usage by having shorter showers because it's not that important to you.. but some people enjoy longer showers.. how is that somehow more wasteful than watching tv or running an electric heater or boiling the kettle or any other hundreds of things you may do that aren't strictly necessary but you enjoy or facilitate enjoyment?
Let people prioritise what they want.
I like my long showers.
But I also only wash towels after several uses.. I only wash bedding once a month, use re usable nappies and sanitary protection.. and there's a lot more I do to save energy too they are just the first that spring to mind.
I don't think you should be dictating how long people shower for like if they use an egg timer it's gonna save the planet. It's just hypocritical and it's just not something you personally enjoy so you are willing to cut back on it coz it's easy to do that.
