So DH thinks a 20 minute shower is perfectly normal

I can't understand what he is doing in there for 20 minutes Confused I don't consciously rush, but I'm in and out in about 5. Wash hair, wash body, done.

This is a very unserious post, we aren't falling out over it, but just for shits and giggles...do you think a 20 minute shower is the norm?

20 mins would be a quick shower for me. Shampoo twice, condition, shower gel, face wash. Shave legs, pits and foofoo.

NewName24 · 09/10/2024 00:05

'Normal' is 'what you are used to'.

For me, that is long, very, very long. But I only ever have a shower to have 'a quick wash'. I am a bath girl at heart.
My dd2 OTOH can easily spend 20 mins in the shower.

PrueHal · 09/10/2024 00:11

Totally normal

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 09/10/2024 00:12

Sometimes I just stand under the shower and de-stress. A good five minutes or so with eyes closed or staring blankly at the wall.
Then I remember to wash etc, but it's the one time I can be lost in my thoughts with nothing else to distract me.

LoveTheRainAndSun · 09/10/2024 00:14

Five minutes to wash long hair, then I relax over other washing and brushing teeth, washing face, just standing there relaxing. About 15-20 minutes. The shower happens to be the only place I get absolute privacy and quiet though, so it's a bit like relaxing time out to me.

My DH takes five minutes. I'm never sure his hygiene is what it should be at that speed.

fridaynight1 · 09/10/2024 00:20

I have no clue what anyone would do in a shower for more than 5 mins. I mean wash hair and other bits and then that's it. Do people literally just stand there under water rain for 15 mins doing nothing? Sounds like torture to me.

littleredcaravan · 09/10/2024 00:23

I have showers and baths to relax just as much as to wash.

I get up earlier in the morning to fit in a good 15-20 minutes in the shower.

I put the water on hot with the powerful setting and absolutely blast my head back shoulders, really helps to wake me up.

I use a nice face mask and face scrub, really lather up my body, shave if I need to, and pay attention to giving my hair a good wash and condition.

It really helps my mood feeling clean and having a bit of a pamper before work.

If anyone told me I needed to cut it down to a couple of minutes they'd be told where to go!

HoHoHoliday · 09/10/2024 00:25

20-30 minutes is normal for me. It's not just a practical way to wash, I enjoy the experience of the shower. Standing under the warm running water is relaxing, almost meditative. It sets me up for the day or relaxes me at the end of the day. I pay the heating and water bill so it's not problem for me.

KenAdams · 09/10/2024 00:27

Ethnic hair does not get washed in 20 mins!

How does washing your hair take 20 minutes?

It's 3-5 mins for my hair to get soaking wet then double shampoo, condition, detangle, rinse conditioner and I apply all my styling products when my hair is wet
Add on actually washing myself and it's 20 mins easily

Gagaandgag · 09/10/2024 00:52

Well I’m sure I read another post about a large percentage of men (larger than expected) doing a number 2 in the shower recently 😂😂
maybe it’s that

wavingfuriously · 09/10/2024 00:57

20 mins here👋 at least..

dontcryformeargentina · 09/10/2024 01:05

It's probably his "me time". Is he not allowed?

Caswallonthefox · 09/10/2024 01:09

I take as long as it takes to wash from head to toe.
I haven't got the patience to stand there any longer, I've tried.
I also don't time myself.
When my ds was home, he used to take forever. No idea how long cuz I didn't time him either. I just know it was longer than me.

RickiRaccoon · 09/10/2024 01:19

5 min for me. I shave my legs outside the shower. Power is crazy expensive where we are. You do what you need to and get out.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 09/10/2024 01:21

5 minutes max and that’s with washing and conditioning my hair. When you’ve lived with water shortages you learn to move fast. Used to be limited to 2 minutes 😳 and a power shower was just a distant memory.

How does your face mask not just wash off in three seconds?

I'm not a fan of showers, it's like standing in the rain. Much prefer baths. Showers I do hair washing and shaving only. Bath I could spend 3-4 hours in.

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 09/10/2024 01:22

I'm shocked tbh at some of the posts. Now admittedly I do have fine hair but a full wash including hair conditioner and a shave, takes me 5 mins tops. Yikes my electric & water bills would be massive if 20 minutes was normal in this house

gotmyknickersinatwist · 09/10/2024 01:23

I remember a thread a wee while back from a young woman who was living with her mum. Her mum was giving off because she was taking 15 minute showers & the OP was given so much grief on the thread.

What on earth are you doing for 15 minutes?! How does it take you SO long? You're wasting water/gas/money! No wonder your mum is stressed! Think of the environment etc etc.

This thread is full of 'oh 20 minutes is nothing! I'd spend an hour in there if I could!'

MN is a funny ol' place.

justjuggling · 09/10/2024 01:24

I’m 10 mins, in, out, done. However DD2 can’t seem to manage anything less than 30 mins. 🙄

Purposefullyporous · 09/10/2024 01:31

It is pretty normal yeah... some people like long showers.
Are you struggling financially and can't afford the hot water? Is there only one bathroom and loads of kids needing to use it or something?
If not then leave the poor man alone.
Christ I gey so shocked at people timing other people's showers and baths here on mumsnet like that's a normal thing to do.
I find that so invasive
Unless it's causing an actual practical issue then leave him alone

Ewww. What sort of percentage are we talking? I'd have thought less than 0.0000001 if men would admit to taking a shit in the shower and the percentage of woman who would admit choosing to stay with such men much less. Have I misunderstood and number two in the shower doesn't actually let mean having a shit in the shower. I'm autistic and I kind of hope I'm taking you too literally because shitting in the shower is 🤮

MumChp · 09/10/2024 01:58

I think it's quite normal if you can afford it. Lots of people can't.

Spartak · 09/10/2024 02:01

I can't see that anyone else has said it so I will.

My guess is that he's have a wank for a chunk of that time. At least he's doing it in private and not sprawled on the sofa where the kids might walk in.
