So DH thinks a 20 minute shower is perfectly normal

I can't understand what he is doing in there for 20 minutes Confused I don't consciously rush, but I'm in and out in about 5. Wash hair, wash body, done.

This is a very unserious post, we aren't falling out over it, but just for shits and giggles...do you think a 20 minute shower is the norm?

I'm a 20 minute showerer. I only recently found out some people think this is really long. Mind you, in my experience of housemates there are definitely some who thought they were in there for 5 and they were definitely much longer!

I don't even shave in there, it just takes as long as it takes. I do have an annoying shower over bathtub with mixer taps, so I'm certain some of my shower time is just me trying to get the water to a not cold not scalding temperature. I shampoo and rinse my hair first, sometimes it gets conditioner on it afterwards, then I wash my body - I tend to soap and rinse pits a couple of times because they never smell clean the first time. Rinse conditioner if applicable, and out.

I cannot fathom how some people say they are washing their whole body, shampoo and conditioner in 3-5 minutes. In for a quick sluice off of the body only, yes. But quite apart from anything else conditioners are supposed to sit on your hair for a few minutes - are some of you rinsing the conditioner as soon as you put it on?!

Drying also takes forever to me, and I don't even usually blow dry my hair. To me the towel gets me a certain level of dry, and then I need either "airing" or really careful drying with the other side of the towel to get anywhere near dry enough to get dressed. I have very dry skin, and wonder if i just absorb more water in the shower or something?!

I swim regularly and I HATE getting dressed quickly in the changing cubicle, it's all wrong putting clothes on still clammy skin! Am considering getting a dry robe just for being able to leave the sports centre without putting closer fitting clothes on still slightly damp skin.

15 to 20 minutes for me, but that includes hair wash and using the squeegee on both sides of the shower screen and quickly rinsing the bath.

I've just timed myself doing the same and it was about 6 minutes. I'm not exactly skinny so was quite a bit to scrub 😂

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 09/10/2024 08:41

Normal for me

Don't use conditioner in the wash on your towels. A properly dry unconditioned towel is a joy as it also exfoliates as you dry yourself.
Also, steam in the bathroom won't help.
I open the window and door to avoid it getting too steamy, unless if we have visitors of course.

Agriculture and farming represent the largest sectors in terms of water consumption globally. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), agriculture accounts for approximately 70% of the world’s freshwater withdrawals.

Yes, but we need to eat! Using water for agriculture has to be a top priority.

When the water companies stop wasting millions of litres of water every single year, I'll start worrying about the length of my showers

This is just the sort of attitude I hate. Of course the water companies have a responsibility to do (a lot) better but that doesn't absolve us of our own personal responsibilities.

NewGreenDuck · 09/10/2024 10:08

@ThatAgileGoldMoose, I use one of those body puffs that looks like scrunched up net curtains. It gets me clean very fast. Lots of lather, then rinse. Also seems to exfoliate and I don't use much shower gel either. And I don't smell!

To the people with long hair here, can you really fully wash it in five minutes? I could maybe wash it in five minutes if I was really speedy, but I wouldn't have time to wash every else thoroughly then! People with short or no head hair, I understand a swifter shower.

I have long hair and just couldn't. It takes a good few minutes just to get it all wet. Five minutes for shampooing - it needs rubbing through the hair and scalp to clean properly. About five minutes to wash the shampoo out. Then conditioner the same, rubbing it through the hair, leaving it in a few minutes, five minutes to rinse clear out. Add on washing myself, and sometimes shaving. It's easily up to 20 minutes!

rainfallpurevividcat · 09/10/2024 11:41

Five minutes for shampooing? The hairdresser doesn't spend that long in the salon!

It wouldn't take me that long to shampoo my long thick hair if I'd been dragged through a mud heap first.

Not all hair is easy to wash! Surely you can imagine that curly or Afro hair takes a lot longer especially if it's the type that repels water
5 mins is nothing - 2-3 mins to get it wet, say 30 seconds shampoo, 1 min rinse, repeat shampoo and rinse and you're there

rainfallpurevividcat · 09/10/2024 11:48

Five minutes just to shampoo it, she said, not five minutes to wash it.

I don't feel as though I have a personal responsibility when all the big companies waste millions of litres a day 🤷‍♀️

You can "hate it" all you like I guess, but even if everyone in the UK started taking five minute showers, it wouldn't make any difference.

MoneyAndPercentages · 09/10/2024 11:49

I'm about 5 minutes. My best friend is around 40 minutes. If we ever share a room when we're away we both look at each other in mock disgust 😂

impressive!

Although if he is, OP needs to stop questioning him, he’s entitled to privacy!

You can tell yourself that all you like, but of course it makes a difference if millions of people are using 75l of water instead of 300l every time they have a shower.

Agriculture and farming create our food. People wasting water on showers creates nothing at all.

rainfallpurevividcat · 09/10/2024 11:54

Also, practically, with five of us in the house if we all had a 20 minute shower there would be no hot water for the third or fourth person. Fortunately not even my teenage DDs take that long and it's never an issue.

And I hate to think how much some people's water bills are.

I hate the clothes on damp skin thing after swimming too. But at home I dry quickly with a towel, comb and mousse my hair, put contacts in, do my teeth, put my nightshirt back on and go back to the bedroom to dress by then I'm normally fully aired / completely dry.

Growlybear83 · 09/10/2024 12:03

It takes me about three minutes if I'm just having a shower. I've got waist length hair and on days I wash and condition it then I would maybe spend up to seven minutes in the shower. I really don't understand what people can possibly do in a shower for 20 minutes.

PercyPhelps · 09/10/2024 12:10

Even with a hair wash it only takes 5 mins but we’ve got good water pressure. At my parent’s it takes ages because the pressure is low so the shampoo won’t rinse out.

ExquisiteIyDecorated · 09/10/2024 12:25

It possibly depends on softness of water too, it takes me longer to get the shampoo out since we got a water softener.

ThisTimeNextWeekDavid · 09/10/2024 12:47

Decent water pressure in a stand alone shower. Takes me 5-10 mins if no hair washing, exfoliating or shaving.

Takes a good 30 mins if doing all the above. I also use a scalp scrub twice a week which takes around a min to rinse out and then a gloss rinse which you leave on for 5 mins after said scalp scrub, 2 x shampoos and 10 min conditioner.

YouveGotAFastCar · 09/10/2024 12:47

Yeah. I love a hot shower. Makes me feel alive and gets rid of a lot of my back pain and aches...

SerenaWaldorf · 09/10/2024 12:52

If I'm shaving everywhere, doing a hair treatment and cleansing my face I can easily take 20 mins - I do enjoy a little stand around and think whilst I'm in there too.

peekaboopumpkin · 09/10/2024 12:52

Depends on the shower. If it's a power shower I can wash and condition my hair, scrub my body and shave my legs in about 5-6 minutes. If it's a shitty electric shower it could take 20 minutes because the flow of water is so excruciatingly slow.

I genuinely don't understand the long showers if you're not washing hair. I can literally be done in a minute if I'm just washing my body.
