Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

Should be called hurricane Exon-Mobil tbh. Looks fierce, climate scientists have been warning about this for years. Since the oceans have warmed so much more than was predicted, this is our new normal.

KenAdams · 08/10/2024 15:34

They do seem to be more frequent and intense

My friend lives in Florida, just had a msg that he isn’t evacuating. Have seen clips on tik tok of complete gridlock and petrol being sold out plus commercial flights out of Florida have risen form $200 to $800? On the BBC there was a very concerned looking meteorologist saying this is on a level with Hurricane Katrina.

mindutopia · 08/10/2024 18:10

It’s going to be awful. My family I am NC with is just outside the area it’s likely to hit, but I have a friend from school who lives in Palm Harbor, which is on a peninsula just on the coast of Tampa. I hope she’s gotten out. I can’t imagine her home will survive.

TokyoSushi · 08/10/2024 18:12

We used to live in Florida, this does look like a bad one. Hope it turns out not to be.

discoballdave · 08/10/2024 18:16

Following. This looks like it's going to be horrendous.

Bananalanacake · 08/10/2024 18:19

I went to America for the first time in my life this year and loved it, was in Orlando. I'm worried about Disney World and all the people who work there, will they have to close it. And what about cruise ships, there are cruise ports at Miami and Port Canaveral, wouldn't like to be on a ship in that weather.

unmemorableusername · 08/10/2024 18:35

I'm shocked this isn't bigger news in the uk. Thousands of uk tourists will be in Florida atm surely? Won't they be closing the Disney/universal resorts? Are the uk your companies flying people home????

Agreed it’s weird it’s not received broader coverage. A lot of Brits also live in Tampa because of its strong startup/scaleup scene and demand for talent.

I’ve been closely tracking for the past few days as I have family and friends working in Tampa. Most have safely evacuated into Georgia. But two have been unable to risk it because the highways are gridlocked and petrol is limited.

It’s unimaginable to us over here and I’m scared about what the outcome will be for so many people.

petermaddog · 08/10/2024 20:43

every thing is closed
cnn does hurricanes well

shellyleppard · 08/10/2024 20:45

@KenAdams saw on the news earlier some people can't afford to evacuate

Newsenmum · 08/10/2024 20:46

Where are people being evacuated to? I think the issue is it’s hard to get out now.

CeruleanBelt · 08/10/2024 20:49

Poor people and disabled/elderly probably can't evacuate easily. Plus there's no petrol, and there are only 2 main highways and they're gridlocked. They can't get out. If you can't get out, you might feel safer in your home than in a car on the highway where you might get washed away. And where do you go?

People I know drove to Georgia. Took them a very long time and cost them a small fortune. But we’re all so grateful they’re in a position to do this as they were in Zone A.

From what I can understand, people in mandatory evacuation zones who can’t leave will be instructed to go to evacuation shelters and there is free transportation to that if you don’t have your own. Plus Uber is also free, but I’m guessing as many Uber drivers as possible will have also evacuated. Public transport is pretty much non existent in Tampa and the surrounding areas.

I’m trying to get my head round it but I just can’t.

petermaddog · 08/10/2024 21:13

Aren’t there loads of retirement homes? Do they have decent storm shelters?

spottedinthewilds · 08/10/2024 21:15

It looks awful. There are lots of videos of it on Insta.

I really hope it's not as strong as it's predicted. I understand it has already been downgraded to Cat 4.

Im not English and understand what the poster meant. Do you have to be rude to someone that is in the middle of this hurricane?

Every year people leave it too late. I don’t understand the phrase carpet baggers though!

User100000000000 · 08/10/2024 21:22

@spottedinthewilds It's currently 3mph away from being a Cat 5

Glittertwins · 08/10/2024 21:30

It's a fairly derogatory term from the civil war era. I've totally forgotten who though!

LifeofBrienne · 08/10/2024 21:30

Yes, it went down to Cat 4 but has re-intensified.
