According to the RSPCA around 65% of halal meat is stunned before slaughter in the UK. The trouble is that there is no way of knowing whether the meat you are buying/eating was or wasn’t stunned.

Lots of animals aren't properly stunned even when they are killed for non halal meat. Just because they're meant to be, doesn't mean they are.

This is a point too. When you're mass producing something, you cannot keep a close eye on ahat goes on. No matter how careful you are. Careful is assuming that every underpaid, overworked slaughterhouse worker actually CARES. And they don't. Who'd choose that job? Geniune question to be thought about.

Not all animals are stunned. They try to avoid it in fact, naturally. Halal or not.

I am not Muslim. I'm also white, privileged and haven't eaten any animals since I were a small child and realised what meat was.

I still call islamaphobia on this argument. It isn't because it is more cruel, it largely isn't, and can we really split hairs 'oh I can agree to be THIS cruel but not THAT cruel!'? What sort of sinister argument is that. Eat it and own it, or stop.

My point exactly. Laughable really so I cannot be irritated by ignorance such as that.

That poster @teatoast8 is laughable. She has quite the reputation.

I wonder if all the objectors of Halal meat would say the same about Kosher…. Including describing Judaism as a barbaric cult? 🤔

I’m sure I have already many times so yes I don’t care. I don’t really buy most people who talk about the welfare concerns- if you eat meat from a supermarket, most restaurants and even butchers, the animal has had a horrible, cruel life and death. So unless you are a vegetarian or only buy meat from a small number of farm shops, you don’t really care about animal cruelty, you only care about animal cruelty perpetrated by Muslims. I also don’t give a shit about the prayers said over the meat. I’m atheist and one prayer is as meaningless as the other

Wednesdaysotherchild · 05/10/2024 19:26

I wouldn’t eat any meat - never have, never will.

I'm a vegan who has 'worked' in abattoirs to get undercover footage. The workers are generally uneducated and far from caring. Despite expecting the worst as I'd seen a lot of animal cruelty over the years, I was very shocked at the lack of standards and respect. I'd say 1 in 5, at least, animals were not stunned and many workers seemed to enjoy being cruel. There needs to be far more monitoring.

I've already said that I think all religions are cults.

zeitweilig · 05/10/2024 19:32

I try to avoid anything labelled specifically halal.

Kosher meat isnt available anywhere near as widespread so people care less.

localnotail · 05/10/2024 19:33

yes, of course - why on earth no?

Viviennemary · 05/10/2024 19:33

I would rather not. I don't eat much meat.

Justice4Friend · 05/10/2024 17:12

No, it's inhumane.

I'm going to add that thanks to God I've very recently been able to give up eating meat and fish altogether - I felt so guilty and I have commited sins by eating meat. Finally I'm free from that.
When I did eat meat I would never touch meat that was sacrificed.
It means you can only go to special places to get your free from sacrifice, tortured and battery meat.

Mum2jenny · 05/10/2024 19:44

Locally the halal chicken is the tastiest I’ve ever had, so yes I’ll buy it in preference to other chicken. Even organic free range chicken isn’t as tasty or tender.

SherryBaby11 · 05/10/2024 16:40

I don't eat any meat. The argument from those who do, that halal meat is cruel, baffles me. The meat industry is cruel, regardless of what music they may play in the background. We'll never evolve as a species until a stop is put to it. If you're not okay with being part of a barbaric industry, don't eat meat.

Religiously slaughtered meat is no worse than other meat, It's all the flesh of a tortured animal who was killed terrified, in pain and prematurely. Blaming the religion is bizarre.

I do eat meat, but I agree with this. All meat comes from the slaughter of an animal, one is no more humane than another.

Thats a bit simplistic though isnt it. There are different ways of dying.

Cheesecakecookie · 05/10/2024 19:48

Yes.

I don’t believe there is a kind way to kill an animal for food.

I also think the meat industry as a whole is brutal.

I have been vegetarian in the past but I’m not currently.

Mum2jenny · 05/10/2024 19:48

Dead is dead though!

They’re not dying, they’re being slaughtered for food. Slitting an animal’s throat, electrocution or a bolt gun to the brain beforehand, none are great.

treacledan71 · 05/10/2024 19:57

I order food for events at work and all the caterers use halal meat. We have a lot of Muslim people at work so it is great that they do. I had it loads of times.

SallyWD · 05/10/2024 20:10

People saying they don't eat halal for animal welfare reasons - just doesn't make sense to me. What people fail to realise is that halal meat is supposed to come from animals raised with better welfare standards. In fact, if an animal is found to have been raised in an abusive or unclean environment, then it's supposed to be nurtured back to health.
People think halal only refers to the slaughter method but it's so much more than that. It focuses on how the animal is raised. Makes me laugh when people say "Oh no, I can't eat halal. It's so cruel" yet they're probably eating animals that have had utterly miserable lives.

Bullied? Wow. You have bullied vegans. You have bullied women who formula fed their children. You have advocated for unsafe sleeping practices for babies. You have been banned at least twice. If you didn't care, you wouldn't be here Emma.

Thanks, I didn't know that.

I mean there's an old fella in the pub local to me who I don't think will stop eating meat either, but I can't claim that his habits are the future of the human race however many centuries in the future..
