This is a point too. When you're mass producing something, you cannot keep a close eye on ahat goes on. No matter how careful you are. Careful is assuming that every underpaid, overworked slaughterhouse worker actually CARES. And they don't. Who'd choose that job? Geniune question to be thought about.

Not all animals are stunned. They try to avoid it in fact, naturally. Halal or not.

I am not Muslim. I'm also white, privileged and haven't eaten any animals since I were a small child and realised what meat was.

I still call islamaphobia on this argument. It isn't because it is more cruel, it largely isn't, and can we really split hairs 'oh I can agree to be THIS cruel but not THAT cruel!'? What sort of sinister argument is that. Eat it and own it, or stop.

I'm a vegan who has 'worked' in abattoirs to get undercover footage. The workers are generally uneducated and far from caring. Despite expecting the worst as I'd seen a lot of animal cruelty over the years, I was very shocked at the lack of standards and respect. I'd say 1 in 5, at least, animals were not stunned and many workers seemed to enjoy being cruel. There needs to be far more monitoring.

I have been in them too. I just didn't want to say so on here as it tends to cause a bun-fight. You're right, as I've said, they don't care about the animals, why would they? That's the point I was making. The cognitive dissonance is stronger nowhere else than amidst those who eat meat.

kitsuneghost · 05/10/2024 20:35

Only in restaurants cause I think it's dearer (not sure if thats true).
To be honest it tends to be in a different section that I don't look at.
Also wouldn't like to take the last then someone who needs it goes without.

Ohthatsabitshit · 05/10/2024 20:35

Yes I have no problem with halal meat.

No. I've been vegan all my life and I'm very glad I don't have to think about how my food was killed.

Scirocco · 05/10/2024 20:41

I only eat halal meat, but I have non-Muslim relatives who don't want to eat it. I'd never serve them it or expect them to serve me it.

Notagain24 · 05/10/2024 20:46

I eat meat maybe once a week, and i know it's hypocritical, but animal welfare is important to me, and i don't think it's guarantred with halal or kosher meat, so i stick to 'regular' local organic and free range meat.

I also don't want anyone praying over my food, or offering it as sacrifice to any god, as i don't want to give any financial contribution, no matter how tiny, to the man who has prayed over my meat.

workplaceshenanigans · 05/10/2024 20:52

Given the choice, no. I've never been to a restaurant which says whether it is or not on the menu though, so I probably have without realising it. I find that thought uncomfortable.

FreeWeekend · 05/10/2024 20:53

Bullied? Wow. You have bullied vegans. You have bullied women who formula fed their children. You have advocated for unsafe sleeping practices for babies. You have been banned at least twice. If you didn't care, you wouldn't be here Emma.

Thank you @BreathingExercise. I recognise the poster and was one of the women she was horrible too. How is she back?

As others have said, the meat industry is brutal for animals. I'm not convinced that any methods used to slaughter animals can be anything but brutal and inhumane. Cognitive dissonance.

I agree with your second paragraph, but fully expect to be labelled as some sort of racist or phobic.
There should be options for everyone.

I regularly ask restaurants when booking, and it's never seemed to cause any offence. If it's something that's important, it's ok to ask.

Do you believe that welfare is guaranteed to be high with non halal or non kosher? It's not.

Frith2013 · 05/10/2024 21:01

Yes.

My ex is Muslim so I'm used to it.

I also grew up on a farm so am under no illusion that there is a "good" abattoir.

DancingLions · 05/10/2024 21:05

If somewhere is advertising themselves as halal then I avoid it. But I can't say I've never eaten halal meat when I probably have.

What I do have an issue with is choice. All halal meat should be clearly labelled as such. Why should it just be assumed that everyone is OK with halal?

People are allowed their own reasons why they don't want to eat it. They shouldn't have to justify or explain those reasons to anyone. Because otherwise people just argue back, as in the cruelty argument.

I am so against any religion that I do not want to eat meat that's had prayers put upon it. From any religion. I feel quite strongly about this and its my right. It doesn't matter if it sounds illogical to everyone else. I'm allowed to feel how I feel. Therefore all halal meat should be labelled as such to allow me that choice.

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 05/10/2024 21:13

Why the fuck wouldn’t I?!

cattywat · 05/10/2024 21:13

I used to live in in a town in the West Midlands, it has a very big Muslim community and the local Asda had a special halal meat section. Why would they have this if all supermarkets meat is halal?

cattywat · 05/10/2024 21:14

Oh and where I'm from the curry's are absolutely banging, you'll never get a better curry anywhere else in England than Birmingham, I'm pretty sure it's halal meat but can't say it bothers me really

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 05/10/2024 21:15

Either you think it's ok to eat animals or you don't. In my opinion the halal controversy is made up bs to make some people feel superior.

Exactly!

Since when was British a religion?🤣

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 05/10/2024 21:33

Funny how no one starts a thread asking if people eat kosher meat. Very funny that

Halal is more widely available and being much more normalised than kosher.
I have no problem with others choosing either, but I don't need or want either.

Cos if people dont question it then all the usual UK methods will be gone and it'll all be halal.

It's the same method of slaughter. The abbatoirs play a recorded prayer during the slaughter session. There is no other difference.

People are allowed to think religions are cults or like cults.

Course there is. The UK method doesnt slice and dice does it.

Thfrog · 05/10/2024 21:41

I haven't ever really thought about it. I'm afraid I don't know the processes involved
