So it is just music playing and no different? Wow really. I do not eat meat but just find this odd. On principle it should not be the default meat in the UK. However if it is just music then it’s no worse or better
I just hope one day there will be a
substiute that stops this altogether..

The abattoir I visited many times in the 1990's was about as good as they can get. Spacious, modern, clean, warm. In the afternoons trucks would unload the stock into large pens with fresh straw and plenty of fresh water. Overnight, there would be no food. This was deliberate to allow their stomachs to settle down and not produce gas. The killing and cutting process was made easier.

The lambs' pens were closest to the slaughtering process half undercover and so it would feel like being in a modern barn, bedded down. In the morning each lamb was driven down an alley between metal fencing and then dragged out to be killed. The first few would be compliant, not having anything really to fear, expecting food or a doorway to a field. Once the killing starts, it becomes clear what is going on. The later lambs look right and left, looking for somewhere to go, but manhandled through nevertheless. Whoever wrote Silence of the Lambs got it right.

Huh? Of course! It's hardly a political statement, it's food.

Yes. I rarely eat meat but when I do I don't care if it's halal or not, tastes the same either way.

InTheStars · 05/10/2024 17:48

Yes, why on earth not?

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 05/10/2024 17:48

Godesstobe · 05/10/2024 16:06

No for animal welfare reasons. It annoys me that it is often served without being labelled as such, meaning people are not given the choice.

@poppppy

it should be blindingly obvious why not.

BreathingExercise · 05/10/2024 17:49

Not stop eating meat. Kinds obvious. The people I know

I don't think we'll base the whole of future humanity on the sort of people you know Emma. 😅 Thankfully.

ivykaty44 · 05/10/2024 17:50

I’d rather not, but a lot of the meat in sipermtetc is halal

if you put the two side by side I’d pick non halal slaughtered meat

littleburn · 05/10/2024 17:51

SnaggingList · 05/10/2024 17:36

I think people massively under-estimate the amount of suffering involved in non-halal slaughtering in practice.

Quite! It amazes me when meat-eaters get into a froth over halal meat and animal welfare. The animals that are processed into non-halal meat haven't exactly been licked to death by kittens. If you feel that strongly about animal welfare go vegetarian.

JohnTheRevelator · 05/10/2024 17:51

I try not to as I disagree with the way the animals are slaughtered, but sometimes,if you live in a heavily Muslim populated area,as I do,it's very difficult to avoid in takeaways and restaurants.

feelingbadinadoormatway · 05/10/2024 17:53

My dc do - the school meals are all halal

LoobyDoop2 · 05/10/2024 17:55

I wouldn’t buy it from a supermarket if there was a choice, but I’m not bothered enough to check in restaurants.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 05/10/2024 17:55

No, but I don't eat meat full stop. I really don't understand why some people are apparently so opposed to halal meat for animal cruelty reasons when they will eat "normal" meat quite happily. Are they really ignorant about the realities of the meat industry or just Islamophobic?

Unless you only eat meat with the highest possible welfare standards, I don't think you can really get away with judging others.

As a meat eater, I agree with you.

Yes, why on earth not?

Cos if people dont question it then all the usual UK methods will be gone and it'll all be halal.

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 05/10/2024 16:37

Show your ignorance why don't you. Halal meat means the animal must be killed as quickly as possible. That's why strict halal eaters are against stunning before slaughter, because it can render the animal half dead and it prolongs the dying process.

That isn’t the reason I have been told. The reason is that the animal must be alive when its throat is cut and some Muslims believe that with stunning there is a risk that the animal will be killed prematurely in the stunning process.

According to the RSPCA around 65% of halal meat is stunned before slaughter in the UK. The trouble is that there is no way of knowing whether the meat you are buying/eating was or wasn’t stunned.

You know other religions exist that have to have animals killed in a particular manner? Or are you just Islamophobic?

The non-stunned meat will be more expensive and is likely in the separate section of Halal meat at the supermarket. There as New Zealand lamb is all Halal but you can still buy it in the "normal" meat section of the supermarket.

MillyMollyMandHey · 05/10/2024 18:06

Not knowingly, no. I boycott some Nando's branches for this reason

Lots of animals aren't properly stunned even when they are killed for non halal meat. Just because they're meant to be, doesn't mean they are.

callmej · 05/10/2024 18:08

I try not to, I only buy meat from high welfare farm shops and butchers and only eat meat out at very high quality places, otherwise have fish or veggie. Partly the cruelty aspect (and taste) as it does only tend to be the cheapest mass produced meat that's halal, and partly because there are many people in the country who can't eat it because of their religion and so have real difficulty when it's served basically everywhere including schools, offices etc. It doesn't seem right that their requirements are totally ignored. I also have a bit of an issue that I believe only muslims are allowed to work in halal abattoirs, which seems rather discriminatory. But the actual slaughter isn't usually any more cruel if the animals are still pre-stunned; I thoroughly object to non-stunned meat whether it's from the UK or imported. I think kosher meat is always un-stunned so I object to that entirely.

Reugny · 05/10/2024 18:11

And here come the anti-semites...

CraftyNavySeal · 05/10/2024 18:11

Yes, I eat meat but I accept that the entire process is awful so worrying about the last part seems rather pointless.

If I were to stop eating halal or kosher meat I might as well go vegan.
