Just seen something trending on twitter and im curious to know if non Muslims eat halal meat and if not, why?

OP posts:
Ketzele · 05/10/2024 18:13

I don't eat meat but if I did I'd have no problems eating halal or kosher.

Doggymummar · 05/10/2024 18:14

Most supermarket chicken these days is halal isn't it. And the lamb definitely is

Huntcole · 05/10/2024 18:20

If you're not religious then its fine not to want meat killed a religious way.

Yes. The vast majority of meat from takeaways, restaurants and even supermarkets is halal. You wouldn't know unless you ask.

There's an abbotior near me, that produces halal and non halal meat. I asked someone that works there once what exactly is the difference. He said they turn off radio 1 and play a recording of a prayer instead. Everything else is exactly the same.

No, unless I know where the meat is from I go pescatarian

Disappearedwife · 05/10/2024 18:35

I avoid it if I can but I’m sure I’ve eaten it from takeaways

According to the RSPCA around 65% of halal meat is stunned before slaughter in the UK. The trouble is that there is no way of knowing whether the meat you are buying/eating was or wasn’t stunned.

Lots of animals aren't properly stunned even when they are killed for non halal meat. Just because they're meant to be, doesn't mean they are.

The actual Islamic way of slaughtering an animal is without the pre-stunning process and a prayer is said over it - approved as ‘HMC’ halal in the UK. The stunning process is in place as it makes the process easier in terms of efficiencies, categorised as ‘HFA’ halal. The stunning prolongs the killing process which brings more pain and suffering to the animal so for all those saying no because of cruelty, please can someone explain how non halal meat is less barbaric than halal meat? Genuinely asking

Erm wouldn't consider Islam as a 'cult' given there's 2 billion Muslims globally and it's the fastest growing religion..

It's all barbaric. People are either clueless, kidding themselves or just don't care.

SwanRivers · 05/10/2024 18:53

Lol, this thread again with the same old arguments.

Yes, I eat halal meat especially when I want a takeaway.

I think all religions are cults, some are just bigger than others.

I have been on mumsnet for 15 years, the vast majority of threads have been done many times over, so why not this one? 🤷‍♀️

Beezknees · 05/10/2024 18:58

Yes, I would.

There is no "humane" way to kill an animal for the purpose of eating it, if you're a meat eater just own it foe what it is.

Mjmum10 · 05/10/2024 18:58

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 05/10/2024 16:37

Show your ignorance why don't you. Halal meat means the animal must be killed as quickly as possible. That's why strict halal eaters are against stunning before slaughter, because it can render the animal half dead and it prolongs the dying process.

I still don't want to eat it, it's not from my culture. I respect other people opinions, unlike your ignorant self

Garlicbest · 05/10/2024 18:59

Yes, I do. That is, I never check whether it's halal or kosher.

I thought - while freely admitting I'm no expert - these traditions were very rigorous on the matter of a single, swift, effective cut? If that's so, I can't see it as any worse than being electrocuted first.

I'm under no illusions about meat-eating being kind to animals, anyway. I once watched a veal calf being slaughtered for my dinner, and have strangled my own chicken. Quite grateful that I don't have to hunt, kill, skin & gut my own - and am certain I'd hurt the animal more than professionals do.

Huntcole · 05/10/2024 18:20

I'm an atheist and it makes no difference to me because I don't believe in it, so why would it matter. Silly argument imo.

CobaltQueen · 05/10/2024 19:00

No. Which sadly means no more indian takeaways unless I go veggie.

Huntcole · 05/10/2024 19:02

Isnt the UK method a bolt gun?

Look up the meaning of cult and explain to me how religion isn't a cult.

LozzaChops101 · 05/10/2024 19:03

I think anyone who thinks that “western” abattoir practices are any less horrific for the animals is a bit deluded really. Religious objections I don’t have much of an opinion on! I think the Twitter hoo-ha is just racists letting rip.

Not stop eating meat. Kinds obvious. The people I know

I don't think we'll base the whole of future humanity on the sort of people you know Emma. 😅 Thankfully.

My point exactly. Laughable really so I cannot be irritated by ignorance such as that.

tinytemper66 · 05/10/2024 19:17

I have when the chicken pieces were reduced in Sainsbury's

Well all I say is its not going to happen 😅 love meat too much to give it up!

Cookieland · 05/10/2024 19:21

I am vegetarian but would prefer to buy none halal meat for my family, or even better local farm meat if possible. Again its a preference so I wouldn’t refuse to buy it but would make a conscious choice if it was on offer
