What's your really pointless super power?

I can tell, just from a photo of their face, if a person has a lisp.

I have yet to find a use for this undoubted super power.

What's your really useless super power?

You people are amazing!

Whocanbelieveit · 04/10/2024 23:49

I can read upside down also.
I work in a garage and if a customer calls and tells me their name (I sometimes just recognise their voice), I can tell them the registration of their car and the make. Sometimes I drive to work and see customers cars on the way, my brain instantly recognises their registration and I can go to work and see if their MOT is due and call them and book them in. In this way I have booked in many people who have missed their MOT’s, even after I have sent them reminders. Maybe quite a useful skill in my job because lots of people don’t remember their car registration number.

l can also order car parts on the telephone whilst doing invoices for entirely different things on the computer and not make mistakes.

Shelby1981 · 04/10/2024 23:54

I can always hear when someone's arrived in a car, from inside the house. Expecting visitors or a takeaway - ahh here it is! Everyone else in the house has heard nothing.

I'm very good at very quickly making up rhymes and rhyming song lyrics. Sometimes i genuinely marvel at how good i am at it. It amuses the kids so it's not completely useless, I guess. I already grieve the fact that when they are a bit older they will stop appreciating this one and only super power of mine.

WaterBuffalo · 04/10/2024 23:57

I'm also quite good at wordle, quordle, octordle, etc. My success rate on wordle is 100% and for a few months I played every night. I don't know how unique that is but I like to tell myself that it's pretty cool. I wish I could tell someone else but no one really seems to care. 🙄

Neodymium · 04/10/2024 23:58

I can reverse a trailer like I was a truck driver in a past life.

I’m a super recogniser. I can see someone I went to primary school with (and not seen now for 30 years) and even though they look different, I will recognise something in their face and know it’s them.
I never forget a face. I even did an online police super recogniser face test and was something like in the top 1% of super face recognisers. Apparently it’s a very sought after skill!

I did an online test too - got 100%! I don’t understand how people can’t recognise people. It’s really weird. I have no idea who is seeking this sought after skill but I wish I could use it for something useful rather just the embarrassment of me knowing them and saying so and they have no idea who I am. I’m obviously just a generic brown haired 45 year old woman.
Totally agree - people grow older and change but it’s still instantly obvious who they are.

I can spot bullshit a mile off. Getting old is wonderful 😎

I can tell when boiling pasta is perfectly cooked by just stirring it with a spoon.

I can talk and type at the same time, about different subjects.

Writing (detailed, explanatory) letters to clients is a big part of my role. I can be typing a letter explaining an awkward policy or process at the same time as discussing with dh what we're having for dinner.

And I do both well, original content with no errors, typing at speed, no pauses in conversation.

I'm not that good at multitasking generally other than this!

I can do this too - draft a legal document on computer while talking to a colleague about something entirely different. When people ask how I just say I’m using a different part of my brain which makes sense to me but apparently not to anyone else. Don’t know how to else to explain it though!

I can read really fast
Caused nothing but trouble at school and cost a fortune in books until the library gave in and let me have an unrestricted ticket
A chick lit type novel paperback takes me about 45-60 mins to read

I read really fast too. I hate spoilers so I have to be really careful with a new book in case I accidentally glance at the back and find out the entire plot.

It also makes me sad because I can get through a book I'm really enjoying the same day I started it. It's gutting when it's over so fast.

elliejjtiny · 05/10/2024 02:36

I have a brilliant memory for completely pointless information. So I remember when and where I bought all the dc clothes from, and the names of people and their dc who I haven't seen for 20 years. Problem is I can't remember the important things like when the bins go out and the date of parents evening.

I can always look at the clock at a time that is exactly the same in hours and minute eg 17:17. DH does not find it interesting when I tell him. My favourite time is 22:22 of course 😂.

OMG mine is 22:22 lol its actually starting to piss me off the amount of times I randomly pick my phone up and it's that time lol obviously only once a day

LindorDoubleChoc · 05/10/2024 03:21

I remember everyone's birthday. Even people outside my family and friends. So this week I've googled Maggie Smith and David Morrissey and Lesley Manville (because I'm watching Sherlock). Maggie Smith's was 28th Dec, DM is 21st June and LM is 12th March. I haven't gone back to check.

LindorDoubleChoc · 05/10/2024 03:24

The 3 guys I sit with at work are 29th January, 16th Sept, 30th August.

Etc.

TheCatsPaw · 05/10/2024 04:48

I'm undefeated at thumb wars. Literally can take on anyone through to 6'6" men with huge thumbs and 5'6" me will still win.

I can also pace my runs so that every km is within 10 seconds without having to use any app or tracker to monitor myself. I don't think about it or concentrate at all but no matter how fast I go my pace will always naturally remain constant over anything up to 10km. And including hills. On flat stretches I will normally be completely static in pace to the second for each km I cover. Totally useless but you did ask 🤣

scalt · 05/10/2024 07:33

I can remember lots of things from childhood very vividly indeed, down to certain conversations. At a school reunion, I was quoting lots of things that nobody else remembered. (But I can't remember much about yesterday, last week, last year!)

As a child, I had fantastic directional hearing. When it was my turn to play "point in the direction of the drum sound" at school, I got it right almost every time, including when it was right over my head, and I did well with one ear covered as well. The teacher was sure I was cheating, and double-checked that I was blindfolded properly. I still aced it. 😀I could hear people moving into position around me to make the drum sound.

✔️ read upside down
✔️ read any handwriting
✔️ super-smeller
✔️supertaster (officially!)
✔️ very fast reader

However I'm terrible at remembering faces and map reading.

It's only at the time we're both dreaming. It's happened twice, with my sister. I mean I could try, but it might be even rarer since I don't know you. I'll try over the next few days, although I don't know how we will recognise it's happened unless we both keep posting about our dream I'd say, we would both have to at least agree to it and perhaps have a key word- say violets before falling asleep

@Namechangetotalkaboutmysleepingpillsproblem Violets!

I'm turning in now. I don't really remember my dreams until after 2am, sometimes later. I remember the ones I have during the day, where I nod off for about 15 minutes. I will be asleep from about 10pm until 5:30am tomorrow.

blueshoes · 05/10/2024 22:35

It is a great skill.

There are now facial recognition machines that can do it 100x faster and better. The technology is quite scary.

‘No human could do this’: how facial recognition is transforming policing

I meant to quote the posters who were good at recognising faces.

scalt · 06/10/2024 07:18

I was also a bit too good at the much-loved classroom game "Four Corners", where the corners of a room are numbered, and "it" calls out a number, and the people in that corner are out. Even though I was blindfolded, I could hear which corner had most people in it. I wish my hearing was still that good!

bifurCAT · 06/10/2024 07:34

I can fund cat vomit, in the dark, without fail... but only when I'm barefoot.

Girasoli · 06/10/2024 07:39

I can do a loop de loop on those ring/gym equipment things at the park to impress small children.

Girasoli · 06/10/2024 07:40

Only impressive to tidy ones, I got a "yeah OK whatever" from DS1.
