Big cities

Croydon and Maidstone for their hideous one way systems.

Anywhere in London - it’s so bloody pointless. Any time I drive or get a cab it would have taken half the time on public transport, and then you have to try and park.

StMarieforme · 02/10/2024 21:29

A38 between J28 and Kings Mill Hospital. Worst stretch of A road anywhere.

Dinnerplease · 02/10/2024 21:32

A Roads in the countryside in the dark with no streetlights and a 60mph limit, which slightly pissed locals drive at 70. You can't see the edge and people drive like maniacs.

Lanes, fine. North Africa, fine. US freeways, fine. London, no problem. A Roads in Cornwall, no thanks.

My only exception in London is Streatham which I also hate, never in the correct lane for the turn and all the markings are on the bloody road which you can't see in nose to tail traffic.

Bristol

Roundaboot · 02/10/2024 21:38

There's a road near me with two primary schools on it. I will not drive up it at kicking out time as it's total carnage - people pulling out or stopping with no indication, kids running out etc.

Which junction is that?

In Roath, where Albany Road, City Road, Crwys Road, Mackintosh Place and Richmond Road meet... but the name comes from back when the area was used for executions... 😱

This roundabout in Colchester. I think you can see why.

I can see why...

'Past any school at chucking out time' is a good call, actually...

sanityisamyth · 02/10/2024 21:49

@Compash ahhhh yes I drive that junction every day to work!

Ignore the Welsh!!

Just checking so I take it on board - is that general advice or specifically about the road signs? 🤣

AngeloMysterioso · 02/10/2024 22:15

Another vote for Maidstone! But now Tunbridge Wells is finally getting a Primark I’m looking forward to never going there again…

Hackney and Reading

Once you’ve done your driving test in Reading it’s all good:)

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/10/2024 23:21

Nowhere. Love driving. Hoping for an off road thingy for my birthday.

Giggorata · 02/10/2024 23:36

Leeds and Paris. Leeds I think is pretty much peculiar to me, but I find it worse than London rush hour. And everyone hates Paris driving, either in it, or the route periphique.
Moscow. A scrum in some spots.
Limerick, because there is, or was, a bottleneck set of traffic lights that would only let about two vehicles through at a time, then you had to wait for about a year for the next turn.
Nottingham, because although it's not too bad in itself, once in, I can never get out.

Smart motorways

OMG yes - I close my eyes every time.
Should clarify that I am the passenger.

miserablecat · 03/10/2024 08:04

We were once on a motorway (or busy 3+ lane road) near Birmingham that had no barrier or central reservation, DH was driving but I still hated it.

Also Luton, I'm sure I normally do at least 2 laps of the one way system before I get where I want to go

And any busy old town/village that was built for horse and cart and is now accommodating hordes of cars in 2 directions. (Usually tourist towns and yes, I am part of the problem!Blush)

overindulged · 03/10/2024 08:05

Motorways, bores me to death.

Sheffield.

Are you a swim parent?

Sheffield for me too. Far too many roads that aren't indicated as bus lanes that are suddenly bus lanes. Add to that the M1 to get there!!!!

The number of fines issued every time a swim meet is held at Ponds forge just proves people don't know they are driving down a bus lane.

Clearinguptheclutter · 03/10/2024 08:12

Paris and Rome-
was only a passenger in the latter but suffice to say, never again
