Big cities

M4. It’s so boring I feel like falling asleep. Any long boring motorway is the worst for me.

Picture of the offending bit of the M5

This terrified me when I first drove on it 😬😬😬😬

Gorgonemilezola · 02/10/2024 19:19

France because of the tailgaters, especially on the motorways, Italy full stop and agree with pp, roads without barriers and huge drops (Norway springs to mind and a DF told me Montenegro is really bad for this.)

Philandbill · 02/10/2024 19:19

Country lanes in Devon with high hedges at each side. And the ring road in Lille which is partly underground. Drove it in my right hand drive car with a French friend telling me which lane I should be in. I thought we might not make it out in one piece.

CharlotteLucas3 · 02/10/2024 19:19

The high peaks moorland. It surrounds us on two sides and it's usually covered in thick fog. Also the M1 and the A1M during the week. Don't like cities much either! Or country road. So that leaves small towns :)

Haveagoodevening · 02/10/2024 19:22

Country lanes in the dark both with no traffic (no lighting) & with traffic (headlights).

And I’ve never driven here but Swindon or Colchester magic roundabouts, I think I’m just going to avoid these.

polkadotpixie · 02/10/2024 19:23

Birmingham - You constantly have to get from one side of a massive multi lane road to the other at the drop of a hat

Coventry - I couldn't get out! It has the worst ring road imaginable

SallyWD · 02/10/2024 19:23

Cities and motorways. I like A roads, scenic routes etc

WeWillGetThereInTheEnd · 02/10/2024 19:24

Central London especially near Marble Arch and the big Hyde Park roundabout, Manchester (when roadworks send me on diversions), Italy, Belgium and Greek mountains with no barriers and sheer drops!

Coventry ring road would be easy if people just moved over to the right hand lane unless joining or leaving, like they're supposed to. I think I'm just used to it. It does make getting around the place much quicker than it would be if you had to go through town though.

This! I was at university just outside Coventry and know it well. The amount of twits who stay in the exit lane as they go around blocking others getting on or off. @stickybear this is for you 😁https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D5IOKcrQJnjs&ved=2ahUKEwjZ2oGsqPCIAxV1QkEAHc6IBm4QwqsBegQIIhAG&usg=AOvVaw2uqqPiEZr-LfxYzF8u6W0U

The elevated section of the M5 between the Portishead and Clevedon junctions.

I love that bit. We love looking out over the views.

RenoDakota · 02/10/2024 19:27

Huddersfield. Have never got through it or into it without getting lost.

HalfWomanHalfHobnob · 02/10/2024 19:27

I came here to say Coventry ring road but I see its reputation has preceded it!

Also Malta.

unsync · 02/10/2024 19:28

Italy.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/10/2024 19:28

If like me, you learned to drive in Bristol in the 1980s this flyover wasn't for the fainthearted. One car wide and went on for what seemed like miles.

What places do you hate driving in?
ScottChegg · 02/10/2024 19:32

Coventry ring road is marginally easier to navigate going clockwise imho, so might be worth doing that for anyone who has to use it occasionally but really hates it.

Justploddingonandon · 02/10/2024 19:32

Country lanes and central London. Also not a big fan of the Severn bridge as got stuck in traffic going into Wales and I swear I could feel it swaying as it took forever to get off it.
Milton Keynes is fine if you know where you're going, but all the roads look identical and I can never find the way back onto the M1!
I'd add the mountain roads in Cyprus but I flat out refused to drive on those.

Sirzy · 02/10/2024 19:33

I drove in London last year and would never do it again!

not a fan of city driving at all really.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/10/2024 19:33

Paisleydad · 02/10/2024 18:38

Sheffield.

Only London or Swindon is worse, IMHO

ScottChegg · 02/10/2024 19:36

@MrsMoastyToasty What happened if you broke down on there?!

TimmyMalletsSpecs · 02/10/2024 19:36

Edinburgh town centre was a bit iffy. I'm usually laid back but was sweating throughout.
Birmingham was tricky going into it.
Leeds city centre you can get stuck on the city loop and think you won't ever escape.

ShortyWentLow · 02/10/2024 19:37

London.

I've seen how petty TFL can be so I'm worried all the time about accidentally getting a wheel in a bus lane or something like that. There's also a level of aggression in the driving in general that I don't find in other UK cities.

WonderingWanda · 02/10/2024 19:38

I'd never really twigged that section of the M5 was on such tall pillars @MrsMoastyToasty 😲 now I am slightly terrified of it.

LizzieBet14 · 02/10/2024 19:38

My local hospital car park.... It gives me nightmares 😩
