Big cities

Also Coventry Ring Road I nearly always miss my turning and end up in that bit that looks like it should only be for buses or pedestrians or something and then I have a panic that I'm driving somewhere that I shouldn't be! I don't go to Coventry often enough to remember the right exit and for some reason I'm too stupid to read the satnav!

Compash · 02/10/2024 20:06

In the dark.

And Death Junction in Cardiff.

AndromacheAstyanax · 02/10/2024 20:08

Norwich. I always get lost there.

Any large town with a confusing one-way system. I'm looking at you Maidstone.

I also detest maidstone. I’m okay going to my one usual destination but when I came from the other direction going to McDonald’s I nearly cried 😂

Lonelycrab · 02/10/2024 20:10

Steep mountain roads where you have think about dropping into first gear. Always get the heebie jeebies about my brakes failing. North Wales I’m looking at you…

M25 or London south circular no problem at all however.

Caen ring road.
The by pass in my town. It depresses me so I always go the old way

The fairly small holiday town close to where I live. It's like being in a living action hazard perception test. Despite the fact that there are multiple pedestrian crossings down the main street people still insist on crossing in other places, cars pull out of side roads without looking, people step out from in between parked cars looking at their phones and you even get people stopping in the middle of the road to take photos. I hate driving there and really only go when it's unavoidable (my doctor and dentist are there.) Oh, and there's a particular mini roundabout that people seem incapable off using correctly. I lived in a bit city for many years and learned to drive there, I'm not scared of driving in built up areas but I really hate that little town centre. I don't know if it's something to do with lots of people being on holiday and thinking normal rules don't apply, but it's really not a nice place to drive, especially in mid Summer.

This sounds simular to my local town, where I am currently taking driving lessons. I was so relieved when all the tourists went home after the summer! If I'm going to pass my test I think i better take in March, before the summer rush though.

Kennedy tunnel Antwerp.

RampantIvy · 02/10/2024 20:33

The A167M through Newcastle is a nightmare with roads going off to the right and the left. The A58M in Leeds is just as bad.

squashyhat · 02/10/2024 20:35

This roundabout in Colchester. I think you can see why.

The M8 through Glasgow is like wacky races, I weirdly love it though, it's where I learned Motorway driving.

The M8 in Glasgow always reminds me of my dad. Many years ago, after I'd passed my test, we did some motorway practice on the M6, and he told me to turn off at the next junction. I asked, "To the right or the left?" and he replied, "When did you last see a right turn off a motorway?" He'd obviously never been to Glasgow!

I came here to say Coventry ring road but I see its reputation has preceded it!

Also Malta.

The joke used to be that the Maltese drive on whichever side of the road is in shade.

Where is the right hand turn off? I can't think.

Dual carriageways.
Darkness.
Driving on a dual carriageway in the dark is a double whammy of terror. Thanks perimenopause 🙄 (I'm in a part of Scotland with no motorways, thank goodness).

None .. I can drive !!

sanityisamyth · 02/10/2024 21:05

I love driving. Anything, anywhere.

Cardiff. Too many words on too many signs. Although easier now I have a satnav!

Ignore the Welsh!!

ThomussTank · 02/10/2024 21:12

Small Heath, Sparkbrook, Lozells. Birmingham.

Movinghouseatlast · 02/10/2024 21:15

My own bloody road. It's single lane, no streetlights. You have to reverse into a passing place, up to 100 yards. I HATE it.

Also, Birmingham. In particular 5 Ways roundabout.

In the dark.

And Death Junction in Cardiff.

Which junction is that?

Feckedupbundle · 02/10/2024 21:21

Leicester, cycle lanes, bus lanes, one way systems, traffic lights that let only two cars through, pedestrians who just walk out into the road without looking and a lot of drivers who seemingly have never passed a driving test. Thankfully I have no need to go there now, even though I passed my test there.
Driving over the Grand Tetons in Montana. I hate heights and DH was driving,so I was on the 'outside' seat. I had to shut my eyes in some places as the drops were terrifying.
I'm quite happy on country lanes,my reversing is on point and I like to think that I'm prepared for the unexpected around each corner.

Where is the right hand turn off? I can't think.

Had to google this as I don't go often and don't know the junction numbers. Seems that around J15-17 there are slip roads leaving and joining on the right. This article says "The knotted tangle of junctions includes Britain's closest exits and more than one unusual right-hand sliproad. It was designed and built following the design guidance for American urban freeways, and it shows: the urban M8 is nothing like other UK motorways and instead is clearly and visibly straight out of Los Angeles."

Through mountain fog and driving rain at twilight, it’s the worst.

Yes this.

JohnCravensNewsround · 02/10/2024 21:27

Slough. Used be on my patch back in the day before sat nav.
I'd think "I recognise this, as somewhere I have been lost".
