Big cities

@ScottChegg the M5 or the Bristol flyover?

CrushingOnRubies · 02/10/2024 19:42

Unfamiliar cities where I'm relying heavily on satnav to get to where I'm going.

pictoosh · 02/10/2024 19:42

Glasgow. I have a real have-car-will-travel attitude to driving but driving in Glasgow puts the fear of God into me. It's a labyrinth of one way systems.

Unprecedentedusername · 02/10/2024 19:45

I don't mind cities or country lanes but will not go on a motorway

JBJ · 02/10/2024 19:45

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/10/2024 18:45

Picture of the offending bit of the M5

That's actually my absolutely favourite bit of motorway! Love the views

ScottChegg · 02/10/2024 19:46

@MrsMoastyToasty The flyover!

ihaveanaughtydog · 02/10/2024 19:47

The Amalfi coast. It was absolutely terrifying. Narrow, winding cliff edge roads with huge drops down. Locals whizzing in and out on their zippy mopeds. Never again.

idkbroidk · 02/10/2024 19:47

handy cross roundabout (high wycombe) and the sainsburys roundabout in slough. both are evil and i avoid them AT ALL COSTS even if it means adding extra time to my journey

JBJ · 02/10/2024 19:48

The magic roundabout in Hemel Hempstead. Done it several times and can never seem to get in the correct lane!

Also dislike unknown city centres. Love motorway driving though, and country lanes in the daylight (hate it at night though!).

ElaineMarleyThreepwood · 02/10/2024 19:48

Petrol stations (horrible places) and car parks (too many pedestrians and too much random behaviour)

Julen7 · 02/10/2024 19:48

@idkbroidk I was just about to mention the dreaded Handy Cross roundabout!

Ratfinkstinkypink · 02/10/2024 19:49

Cambridge.

The elevated section of the M5 between the Portishead and Clevedon junctions.

YES!!!

But why is it so awful?

Oblomov24 · 02/10/2024 19:52

Central London at 20mph I hate.

The fairly small holiday town close to where I live. It's like being in a living action hazard perception test. Despite the fact that there are multiple pedestrian crossings down the main street people still insist on crossing in other places, cars pull out of side roads without looking, people step out from in between parked cars looking at their phones and you even get people stopping in the middle of the road to take photos. I hate driving there and really only go when it's unavoidable (my doctor and dentist are there.) Oh, and there's a particular mini roundabout that people seem incapable off using correctly. I lived in a bit city for many years and learned to drive there, I'm not scared of driving in built up areas but I really hate that little town centre. I don't know if it's something to do with lots of people being on holiday and thinking normal rules don't apply, but it's really not a nice place to drive, especially in mid Summer.

This is Bakewell isn’t it? Maybe you didn’t mean it to be but it is. Even down to the roundabout that has a magnetic force that disables indicators and drags cars into the widest possible arc past each of the exits.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/10/2024 19:55

Birmingham and Manchester.

Leeds, Sheffield, much of London are fine..

Badbadbunny · 02/10/2024 19:58

City centres! Too much "traffic calming", bus lanes/gates, one way systems, access only roads (often not clearly signposted), weird junction layouts, etc. delivery drivers and taxis randomly stopping without indicating/pulling in safely, not to mention too many people who clearly can't drive (most probably never passed their driving test!).

Give me country roads, motorways, dual carriageways any day!

Sounds a bit like Padstow, people glare at any cars driving through as if they have no right to be on the road

Lulu1919 · 02/10/2024 19:59

Anywhere I don't know at night !!!

Babbahabba · 02/10/2024 19:59

Country roads & cities.

Love motorways.

ScottChegg · 02/10/2024 19:59

Once upon a time I would have said Catthorpe interchange, and that bloody awful M4 roundabout on the A34 near Newbury. Both now just a memory albeit one that still makes me shudder when I recall it.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/10/2024 19:59

@ScottChegg I was never unlucky enough to break down on the flyover, but I would imagine that half of central Bristol would become gridlocked. It was demolished many years ago.
@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads it's horrible if you're towing a caravan in high winds and a lorry overtakes you or even if you are in lane 3 southbound and there's only a low barrier to prevent you toppling onto the northbound carriageway. Iunderstand it was built that way because the people who owned a house on the hillside near the southbound carriageway didn't want to lose their view across the valley.

JBJ · 02/10/2024 20:00

Also London, specifically coming out of the disabled parking at Hyde Park at nearly midnight in the pouring rain after a concert. Bloody terrified me, either people everywhere and all the bikes weaving in and out of traffic. Navigated that, then drive on to a hotel in Hemel Hempstead and had to go across the Magic Roundabout to get to it. I nearly had a meltdown!

Paris. Passing the Arc de Triomph, I thought we were actually going to die. Gritted my teeth and braced for the bang the whole time.

I agree, Paris is horrendous. See also - Brussels.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 02/10/2024 20:00

So many...Leeds - I just can't get my bearings at all.The Mancunian Way - the exits are all too close together, too near the slip roads on, and all looks the same. And the Wandsworth gyratory. I know my way round there really well, but seemingly no one else does, so I'm forever having near misses with people changing lanes late and dangerously.
