I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

Agree about lampshades

Bought a new build a year ago, got a job lot of those cheap white ones from IKEA for 'the meantime' to avoid a million bare bulbs

We're still going to have them when we move out aren't we?

Yup... Lighting is always insanely expensive... BHS used to be a great place for cheaper but nice enough lighting... 😢

Gingerisgoodforyou · 25/09/2024 22:07

Yes to care homes. When I think of the money my mum is spending to sit in a chair, watch rubbish tea and be fed unappetising food she never would have eaten at home, I could weep.

And vets bills. I don't mind paying for expertise, but 80£ just to give them a once over, and £20 to sign an insurance form is taking the piss.

Holidays anywhere...

FlyHalf · 25/09/2024 22:08

proper curtains. I thought I'd ticked off all the eye-opening 'how much?!' moments of adulthood - pet insurance, dental charges, splitting the bill graciously when you're driving and everyone else is hitting the wine - but proper curtains was a shocker. I totally understand now why Scarlett O'Hara turned her curtains into a ballgown. I feel like mine should provide a winter coat for all the family and the dog.

Lampshades! I'm trying to find a replacement for one that fell apart recently. £25 for the most boring beige bit of wire and paper faux linen. Anything even vaguely interesting starts at about £45. Anything I actually like starts at £70.

Agree with aerosol antiperspirant.

For me - hot chocolate (I don't drink tea or coffee).
200g of branded hot choc is £5. In theory this is 20 servings but in reality probably only 10. So 50p/cup.

I've switched to Tesco own brand which is not as nice but given I have 1-2 a day, makes a difference in my purse as it's half the price per 100g.

TheGreatIndoors · 25/09/2024 22:16

Jesus God yeah I bought fish & chips at a UK tourist destination last year - £18 per portion!

Cherries

That one I understand!

Cherries are really fragile and have a short shelf life. Unlike strawberries and other berries, they are stone fruit that grow on trees not on bushes or on low plants which are easily picked.

So it’s really labour intensive and there are lots that don’t meet the quality standards. That’s why they are so expensive compared to other summer fruit.

MidnightPatrol · 25/09/2024 22:17

Olive oil currently priced like liquid gold

GreatNorthBun · 25/09/2024 22:17

@Conniethecatapillar Aldi green carrier bags are biodegradable and you can use them in your compost bin.

SocksTalk · 25/09/2024 21:19

OP, we have switched to compatible electric toothbrush heads which cost a fraction of the price and seems to do the same job.

What does compatible mean. I'm desperate to find a cheaper option.

Blankname22 · 25/09/2024 22:17

Farmers markets. I remember going the first time, being excited about expecting bargains as the farmer to customer would be cutting out the middle man, or even two middle men, wouldn't it?

Was not the case. Anytime I pass by I am shocked at what people pay for food at these markets. And still don't quite understand why cutting out middle men can triple the price.

takealettermsjones · 25/09/2024 22:18

The only cough syrup my very coughy kid likes... I must have never really registered the price when it's been in with a big shop but I bought it on its own the other day and the bastard's a tenner!

Sexyshrek · 25/09/2024 21:34

Olive oil. It literally grows on fucking trees.

No it is not. Try harvesting them, it is back breaking, neck aching, arms throbbing and tiredness I can’t explain, kind of job.
We never sell for less than 25€ a liter and during picking season that feels too cheap.
