What things do you think are ridiculously expensive and you don't know why?

I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

I’ve never understand why cake stand mixers are crazy expensive and even non Smeg ones! Like when new things come out over the years say it’s the latest juicer or blender or a newer shinier slow cooker etc they always start a little on the high side but e entirely go down cheap as chips but over the years these cake mixers (as pretty as they are - not sure how useful one would be though to ‘justify’ taking up that much space in the kitchen) these things never go down in price always remains on the highest price range compared to other kitchen appliances imo.

@ChishiyaBat

I didn't realise that you aren't suppose to take iron supplements at the same time as indigestion remedies.

I was taking my ferrous sulphate and omeprazole at the same time....

Are you not? I did that for months 😅Why shouldn’t you take both?

I once discovered you shouldn’t take CBD oil and codeine together whilst I was at work 🫣

Yes! I used to love pantomimes when I was little so really wanted to start this tradition with our family but even they are all well overpriced for us as the baby is the same price as a 16 year old would be! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Try local Amateur Pantos. The bigger , more established companies are often close to being professional and offer family tickets.

Home Bargains sell replacement electric toothbrush heads for a fraction of the price (£4) of the ones you'd buy in Boots.

ThatLoftyTraybake · 01/10/2024 19:48

You can buy replacement electric toothbrush heads from Home Bargains , I think I paid about £4 for 4 of them the last time I bought them They are compatible to the Brand names.^^

You can fill up empty water bottles in the toilets of the airport using a tap that has fresh water once you've gone through customs. Also sometimes you will find one of these in a public area i.e. main concourse, shops of the airport etc.

"...and even non Smeg ones!"

I'm not too sure that Smeg are a particularly premium brand when it comes to stand mixers!

KitchenAid are the big brand in this area and their small mixers start at around £375

"...they always start a little on the high side but e entirely go down cheap as chips ... these things never go down in price always remains on the highest price range"

I would disagree with you here. I bought a random stand mixer from Amazon in 2021. It was 1,500W and had an 8L bowl. At the time I paid £175 for it.

It has been absolutely fantastic, I use it to make bread every week and for lots of other things as well. Three years later it's still going perfectly fine being used two or three times a week.

In response to your comment, I just had a quick look online at Amazon. The specific brand that I purchased is no longer available, but an equivalent mixer (1,500W and an 8L bowl) on Amazon is available for £140.

£175 in 2021, after inflation, is around £210 today (source: https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy/inflation/inflation-calculator)

The fact that you can get a product with equal specifications for only £140 today does suggest that these things are getting cheaper.

How come a few people I know had their EMPTY bottles confiscated from them in security?

Usually get a meal deal sandwich. I remember in Rome airport got a coffee, bottle of water and a pastry for €5. The coffee was similar size to the standard coffee in McDs.. In Rome, its normal to pay that for an expresso type coffee.

Petrol, we’re an island of coal sitting in a sea of oil
Vet bills, extortionate, £95 for five minutes & one booster jab. I can buy enough, similar, to inject 20 goats myself for £7.
Farmers markets
Blackberries
cauliflowers
magazines
mongrels called oodle, doodle mixes with all kinds of potential health problems.
town centre car parks

I parked in a town centre car park the other month, visiting my hairdresser in a different town
I sent a text to my dad - it was 50p for 3hrs Grin said I'll go back there again just to shop!

ThatLoftyTraybake · 02/10/2024 19:33

I've not experience having an empty water bottle placed in my hand luggage confiscated going through customs. 😮

keepingsanity · 02/10/2024 19:38

My local Greengrocer £6.99 for a watermelon and £7 for a punnet of strawberries

keepingsanity · 02/10/2024 19:45

Oh and a scoop of ice cream at a national trust property £4.40
Their entrance/parking fees have gone silly too.
I was disgusted at that. I think they're making their properties exclusive to the rich no accessible to all. I did write in to them

Curtains

Omfg this!! Nearly fainted when I got a quote for our back bedroom. So pissed off I learned to sew and made them myself. The cost of the sewing machine plus fabric was less then getting them made ha.

Just about everything these days. Having any work done on the house is second mortgage time. I wished I didn't have to eat anymore as that would save a fortune

A lot of airports don't have them though. They often say that the water in the loos isn't potable and don't have water fountains elsewhere.

From the two airports I use most frequently, I am not sure about Heathrow but I know Southampton airport does have an airside water fountain.

I put the empty water bottle with my phone etc in the tray and it's never been a problem. You do have to make sure it is completely dry though, which is easier said than done.

They want you to join as a member, that is why they make it so expensive. I agree their prices for non-members are too high.

Cinema tickets!!!! Sell an arm and leg to sit on an uncomfortable chair for 2 hours - goes without saying that the food is a rip off

Last time I went (31st August) it was £4 and the most comfortable fully reclining chair. You’re doing it wrong.

Bignanna · 03/10/2024 18:52

Keeping sanity- Where is that? He can they justify those prices? Do they sell many?

Vue? their newer seats are amazing, with the reclining, and the little table that rotates around for your snacks. so comfortable.
and since we got a cineworld, which has the 4d (great for the right films) and imax screens, their prices have come right down to compete

eta. if you have anyone on any disability benefits or registered blind, look up the CEA card, as if you get the right benefits, you are entitled to a free carers ticket. the card costs about the price of one single ticket, and lasts a year. my husband gets it because he's on PIP. but other disability benefits apply, and it's not well known, so let anyone you know who might be entitled know about it, it's well worth having. it pretty much pays for itself in one trip
