I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

Toilet roll..tiny and wafer thin paper.

We've just emptied out a massively over full cupboard upstairs and found a pack of loo roll at the back, bought probably around 10 years ago. The rolls are an inch taller than today's offering, and last approx 2.5 times longer. The strength of the paper is much firmer too. Interestingly they're not puffed up with air or puffball quilted as today's stuff is either, probably because they didn't need to use cheap tricks to make them appear something they're not . I also remember when packs used to quote how many pieces 'at least' were on each roll. Not any more.

Farmers markets. I remember going the first time, being excited about expecting bargains as the farmer to customer would be cutting out the middle man, or even two middle men, wouldn't it?

Was not the case. Anytime I pass by I am shocked at what people pay for food at these markets. And still don't quite understand why cutting out middle men can triple the price.

Thanks for reminding me of this!

Macaroons! And Vanish OxyAction which as a parent of two young children is an absolute essential in our household

JasmineTea11 · 25/09/2024 22:31

I was about to be all serious about the fact it's capitalism, resources used and the fact everyone wants/needs to make a profit.
But then I realised it was a lighthearted thread and you all already knew that, and that's why stuff costs money.

Insanely cheap items is also fun! Big bottle of Vaseline moisturiser, costs a few quid, lasts me a year!

I have still got the tub of Vaseline that came with my first Bounty pack 31 years ago!

GreatNorthBun · 25/09/2024 22:05

@BunfightBetty you don't need to buy those tablets. The old cheap dishwasher powder works just as well, maybe better.

Thanks for that, I might have to go back to the old school stuff.

Tv licenses and all subscription services now.

can I just say I had a happy life with no adverts, now adverts everywhere…it’s making me sad

( one of many reasons) but it’s still annoying

Downthemedow · 25/09/2024 22:33

Glasses! I understand the lenses are expensive, but the frames? Hundreds of £ for a bit of wire and plastic?!

RightSedFred · 25/09/2024 22:33

Printer ink. What do they make it out of - ground up unicorn horns sprinkled with gold dust, or what?

TheAlchemy · 25/09/2024 22:33

All Heinz stuff. It’s basically a luxury brand now.

chocolate seems so expensive now out of nowhere?

99’s from vans. They’re £4 now just in our local park for a cone!

DadJoke · 25/09/2024 22:34

What does compatible mean. I'm desperate to find a cheaper option.

I've not tried them yet but these £0.75 each, the branded ones are £5.50!

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/306350543?_gl=110l57g7_upMQ.._gaOTQ0Mzc3NzYyLjE3MjcyOTk4MTQ._ga_33B19D36CY*MTcyNzI5OTgxNC4xLjAuMTcyNzI5OTgxNC4wLjAuMTYzOTc4NTAyMQ..

I'll be giving them a go, worth a punt at that price.

There are different glasses on sale though, and a lot of the time you can get two nice pairs for £100 or so.

Cat food.
Toilet rolls.
Toothpaste (unless on offer - standard homage was £4 the other day in Sainsburys!)

RosesAndHellebores · 25/09/2024 22:36

Olive oil.

Omeprazole, £3.99 for a generic version that lasts 3-6days, the Dr won't prescribe it, so some(most) months when I am really broke I just have to suffer with the pain, trouble swallowing and reflux.

It is miles cheaper from an online pharmacy.

But has the gp looked into why you need it so often?

maverickfox · 25/09/2024 22:37

SnobblyBobbly · 25/09/2024 22:22

Another one for Olive Oil. When? Why did it get so expensive?!

I used it for everything before and now I have a very small secret bottle for my 'best' salads 😆 Sad but true.

The olive harvest was affected by extreme weather and some trees are also affected by disease.

Moonshine5 · 25/09/2024 22:37

Anything gluten free

RightSedFred · 25/09/2024 22:37

Sexyshrek · 25/09/2024 21:34

Olive oil. It literally grows on fucking trees.

There's a disease that's destroying large numbers of olive trees all over Europe. There's a severe shortage of sunflower oil due to the situation in Ukraine.

Both of those combined = price hike in olive oil.

dizzydizzydizzy · 25/09/2024 22:38

Olive oil has got so expensive due to poor harvests caused by climate change (droughts, fires). See:

No idea why train fares are so much,
Although you can save a lot by booking well in advance.

Greetings cards.

You can get about 10 cards for £1 in the card factory ?
Or I get nice basic birthday cards for the kids friends for 25p each in Tesco ? So 4 for £1 in there ?

lcakethereforeIam · 25/09/2024 22:39

I've been seeing lots of stories of olive oil being stolen from the farms. Was it one of you lot? 😊

Although it must be heartbreaking for the farmers.
