I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

Any extras with EasyJet (luggage, choice of seat)

Toilet roll and decent kitchen roll

furniture (even Ikea has become expensive now)

Takeaway sandwiches (Pret, Gail’s, M&S, etc)

this was my first one…. 6ft x 4ft. Was a labour of love, but it was plain and boring…. But very comfy 😅

Razors. Sandwiches/paninis in coffee shops. £5.90 for a tuna panini? You have got to be having a laugh. And glasses of wine in London pubs. 10 quid!

Mt61 · 27/09/2024 17:47

Builders, why so do they charge so much? Compared to other skilled workers

Birthday cards. Why are packets of Christmas cards so much cheaper?

I buy boxes of them from amazon now. Decent cards, if you choose the right selection etc. Or I buy a load when in Home Bargains. Otherwise they are stupidly expensive for a card

Withdrawn at OP's request.

Less than a tenner in my local chippy and that's 2 pieces of fish.

it's a good thing I like old fashioned, unfashionable "brown" furniture. it's sturdy and will probably last my whole life, and it's cheap to buy. my little dark wood bureau is one of my absolute favourite pieces of furniture. it's so cute. it was being sold cheap as "suitable for upcycling" !!!! it would be crime! it's adorable just as it is.

I love it too! Hate seeing someone has slapped a load of chalk paint over something that was very decent in the first place.
Upcycling is great, and has it's place, but I'd prefer people knew how to just sand things back to see the beauty of the wood grain than cover the whole lot it in the colour de jour which will date so quickly.

Cushions/cushion covers!!! Why?

Neveranynamesleft · 28/09/2024 05:37

Scarves. ££££ for a small piece of fabric...

WeddingBlues12 · 28/09/2024 09:10

Concerts!

Almost always £150+ now for 2 tickets or sometimes even just 1 ticket to see somebody live and that’s before you factor in travel and potential hotel.

I know it’s not an essential buy, just such a shame. I used to love going to see people live but it’s just extortion. I could probably go on a short city break for the price some artists are asking for.

LeatherJacketWedding · 28/09/2024 09:25

(A bit early but…)
BLOODY CHRISTMAS CRACKERS!
they’re just made of paper, and all contain the same bits of landfill tat but cost a small fortune these days. Every year I spent a ridiculous amount of time and mental energy trying to find ones that are suitably good value. Over the years we’ve exhausted all options. ‘Fill your own’ are extortionate before you’ve even started!

If you can wait until the week before Twickets is great for grabbing a last minute bargain, or Festivals near you just for the day.

Lampshades! I'm trying to find a replacement for one that fell apart recently. £25 for the most boring beige bit of wire and paper faux linen. Anything even vaguely interesting starts at about £45. Anything I actually like starts at £70.

I thought you were exaggerating so i looked on ikea why the fuck is it £22 for some thin white paper and wire? I could literally make that myself

Buffypaws · 28/09/2024 12:06

My cats destroyed my ikea lamp as well. Paper shit.

i am sure we’ve had this but picture frames

That's what I've decided to do. Use the wire frames from lampshades that have fallen apart and cover them myself with fabric or paper.

gift wrapping paper

We have a wider family agreement that we all use the Amazon cloth bags with ties. We also have some from other companies and from craft markets. Though my kids are 20 up now so don't need that "tearing off wrapping paper" thing anymore. Not only is it cost saving and good for the environment but omg, it is so pain free to wrap stuff!
