I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

Most fresh fruit, chocolate (even shop brand), any mobility aid, electric, bottle-flavoured water, coffee shops, toothpaste, yogurts, crisps, bus fares, mobile phone contracts.

As for glasses in Specsavers, they have reduce the number of free NHS frames so you have to pay for your frames.

Pupinskipops · 28/09/2024 21:07

Anything designed for disabled people. It's a racket. They know they have a captive market.

Dog poop bags

Buy value nappy sacks instead. Way cheaper.

In the ridiculously expensive category: Maldon Salt.
I recoiled in horror when I saw the price!

I once saw a documentary about how they make that sort of sea salt. They use time-consuming and labour intensive traditional methods, so I'm not all that surprised it costs that much to be honest.

OP, we have switched to compatible electric toothbrush heads which cost a fraction of the price and seems to do the same job.

Found these to be no way near as good as the originals.. Made it my quest to find an alternative to the genuine ones.. still searching!

and they work better. womens razors are rubbish. they seem to think we only have delicate peach fuzz.

Gillette men's razors are the exact same as the women's ones.. except the women's ones cost more, and are pink.... a total rip off ...

Some of us need or want to go to places that aren't served by buses at the time of day that we want to go there.

What made me take an intensive driving course and pass my test was being turned down for a job because the earliest bus of the day couldn't get me there in time for shift start at 8am.

The job I got just weeks after passing my test started at 5am.

Edited

Yes.. Cars are essential to many.. However that doesn't stop them being a rip off ! running a car costs a fortune.. many garages do indeed rip people off... although I have noticed it is becoming far less.

Alcohol free drinks eg AF gin. Not paying the level of tax so why so expensive? Oh, extortionate profit levels. Hmm

abracadabra1980 · 29/09/2024 05:09

The mark up my vet practice puts in medication. It can be 3 x the price that I can get it online for. Why? The are now owned by a large corporate who are clearly forcing them to take the piss.

Also pet insurance.

taxguru · 29/09/2024 07:06

Railway journeys. Not only ridiculously expensive, but far too unreliable and crowded, don’t even start early enough nor finish late enough . And a really crap Sunday service so limited use for days out, Sunday football or other sports etc.

A lot of people have mentioned trains being very expensive. I have to disagree but I realise the circumstances are key. I travel alone into London off peak for fun. I have a disabled persons railcard. Costs me about £16 return which is great. Takes about 40 minutes. Plus I live 100m from the railway station.

That seems outrageous to me! I used to have six zone gold card when I lived in London, (work perk), in the late 80s it was under 4K a year for unlimited travel. I now live in Perth Australia, about 40 mins on the train to the city centre. A one way trip is just over $4 ( about 2 pounds, or a day rider is $10.40, a fiver).A family day rider is same price for an off peak ticket which covers two adults and up to five kids. Last Sunday in the month is free travel. Considering the population density here is very low compared with London, you guys are getting totally ripped off! Buses and trains are clean and reliable here too. I do NOT miss commuting in London.

peepsypops · 29/09/2024 07:45

Starbucks. Gross coffee and some of the options are up to 6 quid?!

Dishwasher powder and washing powder tabs - ridiculous

Skincare - astronomical for what I believe is anything half decent

AmIEnough · 29/09/2024 08:07

Razor blades!

Rumpunch1 · 29/09/2024 10:55

Stamps

and stamp duty

Wow, I’d love it if it were only £4 for my ticket. If I was commuting at peak time it would be £70 😮

Spidey66 · 29/09/2024 11:33

Water rates. This is the UK, we get plenty of rain, and we're surrounded by the stuff (albeit needing the salt removed). But water rates are £££.

DisorganisedMummyTurningOrgnaised · 29/09/2024 11:34

Cinema tickets!!!! Sell an arm and leg to sit on an uncomfortable chair for 2 hours - goes without saying that the food is a rip off

They are exploitative too…my baby was born 3pounds 10oz so we had to buy size 0 which we could only find in Pampers- £4.50 for 24! Plus they were terrible, they leaked all the time. Thankfully he’s on Aldi ones now which saves us a fortune and they are so much better quality.

Aldi nappies are the best!! I got gifted pampers nappies (best gift ever - give me nappies over clothes that he’ll wear for all of three days)… I used a couple and moved swiftly back to my Aldi ones…

loads on Amazon. they are cheap for a massive amount of them, and work just fine. even specialist different heads, like interdental or polishing ones

apparently, a lot of them are made exactly the same as the alcoholic versions, but then undergo a process to remove the alcohol. that's why it's not cheaper.
but purely from a health point of view, they should probably make it possible to sell it cheaper, and more people would choose it.

I do this with a combination of Sharpies and stickers!

Great idea!

Lol please don't do this 😂#oddments

I was thinking more along the lines of odd pieces of fabric, ribbon etc. Nothing potentially dangerous! Lol.

Eating out.

I was always very sniffy about chains and wanted to support local independents.

In recent times prices have soared and we are just not able to keep up. Even our local pubs charge a lot.

We hardly ever eat out - just eg if it's someone's birthday - but find the deals available in chains more affordable.

I feel bad for contributing to a problem but, equally, need to prioritise keeping our own household's finances in order.

I know what you mean about pub grub prices. I really dont want to fork out £17 for scampi & chips or sausage & mash. Or nearly £30 for a steak. I would in a naice restaurant, but not in a bog-standard pub, where you are served by a bored teenager who wants to be somewhere else.

Yeah, fucking £20 for a box of 6 champagne truffles. Should be £10 max!

HOLY CRAP! really! not been into town for ages, weren't they about £6-7 a few years back!?
