I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

@AllTheChaos Nope not before 😂

Oh no!!!

Harmonypus · 27/09/2024 01:49

Absolutely every f*ing thing!

I keep all my receipts, and everything on last year's receipts is at least 50% (sometimes more than 100%) more expensive this year.

It's all bloody ridiculous!!!

The frozen ones don't go out-of-date as quickly as the fresh ones. The price of a punnet of fresh strawberries has to factor in the cost to produce the punnets that don't sell and get binned.

My friend who works at a supermarket in the fruit and veg section says some years half the stock has to be disposed of as gone mouldy

Cornercandy · 27/09/2024 06:02

You never hear of stuff like olive oil, berries etc of if they had the most ideal weather for the most bountiful crops, no disease in trees, no war, no strikes etc that prices go rock bottom

Insanely cheap items is also fun! Big bottle of Vaseline moisturiser, costs a few quid, lasts me a year!

I second this with Palmer’s cocoa butter! I buy the big bottle with the dispensing top and it lasts for ever……

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 27/09/2024 00:41

Cushions

Cushions are expensive. I buy the cushion pads on their own and just order covers for them. I find it works out cheaper

MarvellousMonsters · 27/09/2024 07:47

Houses.

The bricks & mortar don't cost that much, it's ridiculous.

CanelliniBeans · 27/09/2024 08:04

Agree takeaway coffee. I bought breakfast of a yogurt and coffee on my way to the office and it was £8 something ! I just have to get more organised at home .

Train tickets are a joke. Massively expensive and I can't get a seat or even on a train some of the time. Daily commute is £34 for misery.

BigDahliaFan · 27/09/2024 08:06

@Disneydatknee88 yes to takeaway pizzas. I don't mind paying that if I'm sitting in somewhere with a nice pizza but I'd rather get a coop one and tart it up than pay for a domino's pizza.

i used to think rugs were expensive for what they were…..BUT I then tried (and was successful!) at making my own handmade rug (twice!). they are beautiful but very time consuming and I now understand why they are so expensive!!

Picture please.

TiramisuThief · 27/09/2024 08:36

Depends what kind of rug

I have ones from dunelm. Mass produced, polyester. I also have what is basically a piece of art made out of wool in my living room. Both are acceptably priced i think.

Zoomattheinn · 27/09/2024 08:58

Hope someone has mentioned Lurpak. Was 250g Now £2.15 in Sainsbury’s for 200g

nextdoornightmares · 26/09/2024 20:18

Don't know if it's been said already but Pampers nappies. They are SO much more expensive than unbranded and really not any better.

They are exploitative too…my baby was born 3pounds 10oz so we had to buy size 0 which we could only find in Pampers- £4.50 for 24! Plus they were terrible, they leaked all the time. Thankfully he’s on Aldi ones now which saves us a fortune and they are so much better quality.

Poppingmad123 · 26/09/2024 20:49

Theatre tickets.

I used to love going to the theatre and would like to take my kids more but they cost £100-£150 for a decent seat now so times that by 4 and you could go on a little weekend trip instead! I feel priced out and I’m on a decent wage. That’s not factoring in travel or food expenses. Way too much! 😭

This is a great site for cheaper theatre tickets, centraltickets.tixculture.com

Birthday cards. Why are packets of Christmas cards so much cheaper?

amzn.eu/d/ey5bXrr I buy them in bulk, works out to under 50p each usually.

FlipFlopVibe · 27/09/2024 11:15

Definitely cards, in the age of the internet I think £3-5 for a generic piece of card and £1.35 for a stamp is just ridiculous, for someone to stand it up for a few days and chuck it in recycling.

Also anything for babies. New parents are a captive audience. £1000+ for travel systems, when you break it down it’s a bit of metal, plastic and a material cover.

NonstopMam · 27/09/2024 11:19

Absolutely agree about takeaway coffee, have been trying to decide what my red line is. I think above £3.50 is taking the piss.
Edinburgh hotels are outrageous prices now too, compared to pre covid.
UK holiday cottages as well. Eating out for a family of 5 has become a treat, as opposed to a fortnightly occurrence. It's really jumped.
I could go on!

CrowleyKitten · 27/09/2024 11:33

ErinBell01 · 27/09/2024 00:54

Buy men's ones, they're meant to be much cheaper.

and they work better. womens razors are rubbish. they seem to think we only have delicate peach fuzz.

Snackpocket · 27/09/2024 11:34

Lots of people have said razors and they are expensive but I’ve got an estrid razor and had the subscription for a while but find the blades last ages so I’ve cancelled it for now and am using up all the blades I have in stock and actually I think for cost per use it’s not as expensive as it first seemed.

The cost of tea really gets me, I don’t coffee and the price of tea is insane, even though I know it’s about covering the cost of everything not just water, a tea bag and a drop of milk!

RaininSummer · 26/09/2024 19:54

Tinned soup.

Cheap in Aldi and some of it is almost as good as Heinz.

badgerpatrol · 27/09/2024 12:24

Furniture that is made from crappy covered chip-board from companies like West Elm/John Lewis.
Yes it looks stylish, but for how long?
Destined for the landfill sooner rather than later.
How can £1,200 for a chest of drawers made from chipboard ever be justified??
I've always tried to buy decent SH furniture but the cost has shot through the roof which is why I was checking out West Elm etc, but the prices!

unmemorableusername · 27/09/2024 12:32

Magazines are much more than they used to be.

I suppose that's because fewer read them but for the individual it's the same product so unfair that they pay more for the same product just because fewer people now buy them!

Same with newspapers- now a daily can be £3.50!

woollybean · 27/09/2024 13:36

OXO cubes
Sky

car insurance

the only Heinz I buy is the cream of chicken. all the others are AS good, or even better.

it's a good thing I like old fashioned, unfashionable "brown" furniture. it's sturdy and will probably last my whole life, and it's cheap to buy. my little dark wood bureau is one of my absolute favourite pieces of furniture. it's so cute. it was being sold cheap as "suitable for upcycling" !!!! it would be crime! it's adorable just as it is.
