Sad our church turned its back on dd

Dd has been to church all her life. At one point we moved to a different church that suited us more but we made lovely friends etc and dd was attending youth group until she was 15. Suddenly she was less keen but focusing on GCSEs so we didn’t push it. With clubs etc for the other dc, regular attendance dropped a bit but we were fairly relaxed.

I believe in god but have always had issues with “the church”, but put that aside to be with people of faith.

I recently learned why dd stopped going to youth - they did a full session on how they should pray for gay people in the hope of healing them. How they are so angry about people loving each other is beyond me.

dd is gay. Her girlfriend is loving, kind, polite, and caring. I want all my dc to have loving healthy relationships so have no issue and naively thought others wouldn’t care. Turns out they do. Two of her closest friends stepped away due to her being gay (parents we’d met through church) and now she understandably doesn’t want to go to church, and neither do I.

I’m angry. I hope they’re really proud of themselves from their high horses. On the off chance they’re on here - no, you’re not good Christians.

Thanks for humouring my rant.

As a gay woman, I can assure you that I won't be going to hell as there is no proof that it exists.

Religion = mind control and fear based system to control people. I think today people can see that it is bullshit which it is why it is diminishing. The only place left to peddle it are developing countries where people don't have the opportunity of education.

If all the gay people end up in hell… I know where the fun place will be. Imagine ending up surrounded by the high horse, smug Christians (distinguishing from genuinely non-judgemental Christians).

You’re just looking for a reaction.

Shall we leave it here?

Yes, let's leave your homophobic opinions here. Absolutely no effect on your life, but very detrimental towards people in similar relationships to mine. 👍

Believing something other than that God’s design for sexuality is solely between a man and a woman absolutely does not mean one hasn’t ‘opened a Bible in a while’.

As you would be aware if you had RTFT, exactly what the Bible says on the subject and how that should be interpreted is a matter of much argument and differing views.

Christians absolutely can be and are gay.

The bit we should all be able to agree on is that the greatest commandment is love God and love your neighbour.

OneAliCat · 25/09/2024 22:47

Gay (and civil partnered) vicar here, sending love to your DD and sharing your outrage, OP.

followingthebreath · 25/09/2024 22:53

The Unitarians would be a great option instead. Inclusive, affirming and directly helped campaign for same-sex marriages in places of worship. Not all religions are the same. Or she could try the Quakers? Or go to Greenbelt.
I'm sorry this happened OP.

You speak about "having same-sex attraction" like it's some kind of affliction.

Same crisps, different flavour.

It's okay to not be informed on a topic, but JW and LDS are about as similar to orthodox Christianity as Islam is, and stating that they are the same shows you don't know anything about Christian theology. Which, again, is okay, but you can't speak from authority on thinks you're not informed about.

If you are a Christian, then it is. It's a sin. Just like it's sinful to lust, to not forgive, to lie, to steal, to be rude or unkind, and any number of things you might do on a daily basis. My sin is no worse or better than anyone else's, and I am no less a sinner because I don't have same-sex attraction. The only difference is that I know my sin for what it is, something that separates me from God, and harms me and those around me, and that shouldn't be proud of or even accept, and should instead try to overcome as much as is possible.

If they agree to marry trans people they also will marry gay people in that particular church as if they don’t like gay people they won’t like trans people as another poster said you r talking utter bullshit about saying that they are anti gay but pro trans that’s not how anyone operates believe me if they hate gays they also hate trans people

You clearly know NOTHING about the CofE.
It will marry trans people.
It won't marry gay people.
Go and look it up.

Viviennemary · 25/09/2024 23:16

Some branches of Christianity do strongly disapprove of a gay lifestyle and think it is a sinful way to live. Just go to a church that doesn't think in this way.

How could it be loving to my neighbour to lie to him, and tell him that his sin glorifies God? God has prescribed the natural outlet for human sexuality is between one man and one woman in marriage, and nothing else. Jesus is God, and holds to all pronouncements made by God, other than those explicitly done away with as part of the New Covenant that replaced the Old made with the Jews.

Being gay is an affliction. It's 2024 and people still believe this shit.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 25/09/2024 23:23

I'm really sorry. There are a lot of gay friendly progressive churches around if she is willing to try another but I don't blame her if she's not willing to. If that was my child I'd move fo a progressive church in solidarity with my child and invite her to come with me after I'd checked it's safe. X

You are a sinner, I am a sinner, homosexual people are sinners, heterosexual people are sinners, murderers are sinners, people who don't murder are sinners. The wages of sin is eternal death. You can choose faith in Christ, who died to satisfy the righteous wrath of God, and be forgiven of your sin, or you can choose the eternal death we all deserve. If you have faith in Christ, you will not seek to wallow in your sin by holding it up as a banner of pride and proclaiming "Yes! I am a lesbian", or "Yes! I am a liar" or "Yes! I am an idoloter", you will instead flee from sin, grieve when you stumble and seek God's help to set you back on the path of righteousness.

If homosexuality, or having sex with someone of the same sex is a sin, could you please explain why God creates people who are homosexual, only to expect them to spend their life trying ignore and suppress their attraction to people of the same sex?

This is deep what if it all was a lie to control you. I don't trust anyone in the church they're all pretender's. I am a proud atheist.

Speak for yourself. I'm an atheist, and this sounds exhausting.

What religion is this? Jehovah? Latter Day Saints? No branch of the Christian faith would preach such things, surely.

I left church after being harassed to pray against gay marriage.

I believe in God, and I still pray daily, but I refuse to be part of something which doesn’t honour a loving relationship.

I'm having trouble recalling the bit where god commanded me to be straight, if I'm honest.

I'm having trouble recalling the bit where god commanded me to be straight, if I'm honest.

Romans 1:26-27 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Matthew 19:4-5 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

I have no quarrel with those who do not choose to follow Christianity, your immortal soul is your concern. But if you choose to profess faith, but say amazingly incorrect things like "I have trouble recalling the multitude of passages where it is laid out for me what glorifies God, what God designed, and what God hates," then I do have an issue with you.
