Sad our church turned its back on dd

Dd has been to church all her life. At one point we moved to a different church that suited us more but we made lovely friends etc and dd was attending youth group until she was 15. Suddenly she was less keen but focusing on GCSEs so we didn’t push it. With clubs etc for the other dc, regular attendance dropped a bit but we were fairly relaxed.

I believe in god but have always had issues with “the church”, but put that aside to be with people of faith.

I recently learned why dd stopped going to youth - they did a full session on how they should pray for gay people in the hope of healing them. How they are so angry about people loving each other is beyond me.

dd is gay. Her girlfriend is loving, kind, polite, and caring. I want all my dc to have loving healthy relationships so have no issue and naively thought others wouldn’t care. Turns out they do. Two of her closest friends stepped away due to her being gay (parents we’d met through church) and now she understandably doesn’t want to go to church, and neither do I.

I’m angry. I hope they’re really proud of themselves from their high horses. On the off chance they’re on here - no, you’re not good Christians.

The Bible was written by people, for people, according to the political agenda of the time. It was then translated, sections were left out, sections were adapted - to suit the political agenda of the time. The Bible is not the word of any deity. Like any 'holy' book, it is a document used to control people. Usually women.

I personally would not pray for someone to be 'healed' of homosexuality, I might instead pray for them to understand that homosexual sex is a sin in God's eyes, and for strength and guidance for them so they can resist this.

I'm not gay but it's one of my reasons, amongst a lot of others for no longer attending church. Stopped at 16.

OP, if this episode isn't enough to turn you away from established religion, what will? It's nothing more than crowd control. Congregations are called flocks for a reason. Plenty of places to find community that aren't controlled by men who are terrified of losing their control on wider society.

OP this happens in the RC church where you are taught that it is mot a sin to have homosexual feelings just to act on them🤦‍♀️. I’m so sad for you dd - but can honestly say it’s their loss.

If the Bible says do not eat pork and shellfish in order to be a good Christian there must have been a theory behind it - wouldn't have committed that to a holy book for the sake of it.

Because back in them days if you undercooked pork you would be very ill plus pigs eat alot of rubbish but since them days we understand food hygiene but being in the desert it was hard plus the same thing about shellfish to bottom scrapers but utterly delicious if cooked properly again if not could really kill u food poison and all and back then well no much healthcare etc

OP, it's so sad to read about this. Your DD sounds like a young person with good sense of herself and who she is. I also hear your disappointment - you wanted to give her something good - a community of faith - but you've run up against rejection (and quite possibly projection too, but that's another topic).

Don't give up on searching for what's right for you.

The Bible teaches that the earth is six thousand years old, and that rape victims should be executed if they didn't scream because they must have been enjoying the rape. It's not a book followed by decent or rational people. I'm baffled that any woman would want anything to do with Christianity these days. In fact, I read an article the other day saying that Christianity is now becoming more popular with men than with women. Young men are being tempted back to the church because it's dawning on them Christianity is dripping with misogyny.

The theory behind it was that there was no safe method of food preservation and decontamination at that time. Simple as that. Pigs were routinely infected with trichonosis, a parasite harmful to human health. Don't eat pork = avoid the illness. Shellfish are a risky food in terms of food poisoning even now that we have good food hygiene technology, so having a prohibition against eating it back then made sense - keep your population healthy, it's all about survival. Nothing more than that.And now entirely superseded by modern technology in most places.

You are aware that the papal commission appointed to consider the contraception issue in its absolutely overwhelming majority rejected this view? Yes, Pope Paul chose to override their view with Humanae Vitae but that doesn't mean it's a settled issue - it's bad theology, and a majority of Catholics both inside and outside of the hierarchy don't take it seriously.

Yeah, am a catholic and believe in god, heaven and have always found comfort in the sense of community in mass but hate hate hate all the bigoted crap and disgusting history that comes with it. Really hard to reconcile the two and I do struggle with it
