How Do You Pronounce 6th?

Just that question. I hear it pronounced "sicth" by the majority of tv presenters but I always say "sicsth".

OP posts:
Scentsless · 22/09/2024 14:17

Had to think there, but I would say I pronounce it in the same way as you.

Statsworry1 · 22/09/2024 14:18

Same with fifth…I’ve heard people say ‘fith’! It’s so annoying!

Ineffable23 · 22/09/2024 14:18

I would say sicth. I just trip over my tongue trying to get another s in there.

foreverbasil · 22/09/2024 14:19

See also "Breggzit" that really annoys me... but to answer you OP I say "sicsth" as well.

muddyford · 22/09/2024 14:19

Sixth. Like OP does.

daisym00n · 22/09/2024 14:20

I say it like you. My birthday’s on the 6th and I question myself every time I say it.

SwedishEdith · 22/09/2024 14:20

I definitely have an s sound in the middle.

muddyford · 22/09/2024 14:20

And twelfth, not twelth.

DadJoke · 22/09/2024 14:20

People think they pronounce it six-th, but most don’t. Same with months, which gets pronounced munce.

I think I probably pronounce it as fith. Not sure how I could get my tongue round pronouncing the f in the middle.

Lifestooshort71 · 22/09/2024 14:21

I say sicksth!
Just say six and then stick tip of tongue out to get a th on the end.

KateTheShrew · 22/09/2024 14:27

Sixth = sicsth. You say the number six, then add a 'th' sound. 'Sicth' sounds odd to me.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/09/2024 14:29

'Wenzday' is another one... 🤯

WoahThreeAces · 22/09/2024 14:44

Fith
Sickth
Libry (library)
Wenzday

Undoubtedly all wrong but that's how I talk innit 😁

Aydel · 22/09/2024 14:47

Fith.
Sickth.
Wensday.
Library.
Samwich.

Scentsless · 22/09/2024 14:47

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/09/2024 14:29

'Wenzday' is another one... 🤯

God help us all if we had to say Wednesday 5th February. 😂

Pat888 · 22/09/2024 14:49

Siksth

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 22/09/2024 14:49

Yes! You must have been listening to the same journalists as me recently, OP. It's been driving me mad, just say the word properly, it's not difficult!

Although samwidge, is of course, correct.

DramaAlpaca · 22/09/2024 14:55

Same as you, OP, the correct way.

I had to stop watching a documentary about King George VI a while ago, because the narrator said sicth all the bloody time. So irritating, and should've been corrected when the programme was made.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 22/09/2024 15:02

I say:

Sixth (sicks-th)
Fifth
Libree
Wenzday (do people really say Wed-ness-day?)
Samwidge (though that is one I do wonder about sometimes, as it's not really hard to say sandwidge)

foreverbasil · 22/09/2024 15:05

Sandwidge sounds weird to me too. Isn't it sandwich or preferably "butty"?

mm81736 · 22/09/2024 15:05

Never hear people saying "fith", "sikth' and certainly not "munce".
I'm in north Yorkshire.Maybe it's a regional thing?

EuclidianGeometryFan · 22/09/2024 15:29

Aydel · 22/09/2024 14:47

Fith.
Sickth.
Wensday.
Library.
Samwich.

I raise you:
Fiff
Sickff
Eighff
Mumffs
Wensdee

Dere's twewv mumffs of the yeey-a.

Don't you just love how British English has so many wonderful accents?

PollyPeep · 22/09/2024 15:30

Wow I'd never thought of this but I always say "sikth" and "fith". How do you manage to get another syllable into the word? Sicks-th and fif-th" are quite difficult to say quickly, you really have to be intentional about it. Same with li-bru-ary rather than li-brary.
