Just that question. I hear it pronounced "sicth" by the majority of tv presenters but I always say "sicsth".

I bloody love accents.

I have an unfathomable accent

No-one ever gets it

Everyone always asks, 'What is your accent?'.

I had it asked twice last week.

Accents are so interesting.

I do have an accent that isn't typical.

Gloriana1 · 23/09/2024 04:00

6th?

Sixth.

Obviously.

Gloriana1 · 23/09/2024 04:04

Sixth isn't a back of the mouth.

It's behind the teeth.

rainfallpurevividcat · 23/09/2024 04:29

Turmeric and almond annoy me as well. It's not tumourick and arrmond.

But it I were doing the Christmas reading "In the 6th month, the Angel Gabriel....." then I would annunciate more clearly and make sure I said "sick s th"

Best typo ever

Love it!

Tur mer ik

Al Mond.

Gloriana1 · 23/09/2024 04:40

Obviously.

Gloriana1 · 23/09/2024 04:43

Actually

The nut is pronounced

Ol Mond.

NOT

Al

Ol. Mond.

rainfallpurevividcat · 23/09/2024 04:47

I suppose I pronounce more like "always" than "et al" but definitely with an L sound not an R.

Tumourick makes it sounds positively revolting- John Torode always says it on Masterchef.

It most definitely is ar-mund, no L unless a regional accent (edited to add!)

We're evenly split in my house: I say 'ah-mund', DH says 'al-mund'. We manage to live and let live.

However, nobody, as far as I know, actually says 'ar-mund (with a pirate-style 'arr'). And I think it's unfortunate that people with non-rhotic accents insist on transcribing the 'ah' sound as 'ar'. I have a non-rhotic accent myself, so I do pronounce 'ar' sounds as 'ah', so I'm not criticising the pronunciation (although it's certainly not a correct or 'better one), just suggesting that working out the sound 'ah' as 'ar' is inaccurate and a bit confusing.

KateTheShrew · 23/09/2024 09:04

Sorry, that should say 'writing out', not 'working out'.

Frowningprovidence · 23/09/2024 09:10

I basically dont bother with the 'th' sound at the end.

PollyPeep · 23/09/2024 09:37

KateTheShrew · 22/09/2024 16:36

No, because the 'th' has no vowel sound after it. The way you've written it (six-thuh) would sound odd, I agree, because you've added a vowel sound. Th' and 'thuh' do not sound the same.

It may just be my accent then! When I say "six-th" it automatically comes out as a pretty separate two syllable six-thhh". This thread is fascinating!

OpalGoose · 23/09/2024 09:53

I thought it was just me being over fussy but apparently not.

Every sicth Wensday I go to the libary. I carry my mewll dewll sangwich in my hambag. I don't always get a libary book, I tend to do that mumfly.

But then I couldn't live with someone who thinks al-mund is correct but fortunately we don't all have to conform

People in the south of England insert unnecessary Rs everywhere so it doesn't surprise me that they think there is one in almond.

UnctuousUnicorns · 23/09/2024 10:31

I see that this has descended into the usual snotty, insular bitch fest that usually happens with these sort of threads. 🥱 🙄

upinaballoon · 23/09/2024 10:40

sicks tth

It takes a wee bit of time to say it properly, as do February and library and Mississippi and cafe latte.

Nice, taking the piss out of people's accents 🙄

The only thing you have got wrong with the above for me is that I say libree not libary, sometimes I might say in me hambag rather than my, but only if I want to be looked down upon even more.

Yep, its really vile actually. Nothing new in MN though.

This confuses me so much! I'm considered well spoken (private school, middle class upbringing) and I would say everything in that first sentence as you have phonetically written it there apart from "libary" where I'd say "libree". Are there really people who say "wed-nes-day"? Isn't it very labour intensive to sound it out in this manner?

I'm very Southern England and I have never, ever heard it said other than "al-mond". Nor "arl-mond" or "ar-mond" unless someone is being particularly pretentious (see also, mah-zarella")
