Just that question. I hear it pronounced "sicth" by the majority of tv presenters but I always say "sicsth".

The outright worst thing at the moment is this relatively new southern accent variant where w pops up everywhere. Example - a mewll dewll

Took me an age to think you are saying MEAL DEAL, is that right? And what sort of crazy place puts ws in there? (I am southern speaking but Lancastrian by descent)

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 22/09/2024 20:00

But it I were doing the Christmas reading "In the 6th month, the Angel Gabriel....." then I would annunciate more clearly and make sure I said "sick s th"

Best typo ever

I think we are on the same page. It’s kind of like some London accents that have been around for years but more random w’s

RobinHumphries · 22/09/2024 19:24

The word is six. Where is the th?

@RobinHumphries as in the sixth one?

I was born on 26th and I pronounce it sick-th, although I generally try to get round it by saying eg March 26 (without any 'th'). I also say fith and feb-ru-ery. I am lazy with library and say li-bree.

Another one for the mix is jewellery. I say ju-well-ree, but I've heard joo-la-ree said often.

In your accent, perhaps. In others it’s sickth.

It’s not about right and wrong, it’s just a difference. Language changes and evolves and sicksth is becoming less common.

I banned Mr Tumble in our house when he kept going 'lie-bree! You sign lie-bree' as if that's a word! Drove me nuts.

People say words differently because we have different accents, not because of laziness.

This is just wrong. As the Geoff Lindsey video I linked explains, linguistics is a descriptive not a prescriptive discipline. There is no one “correct” pronunciation.

I don't think this is to do with accent, though. Pronunciation and accent are not the same thing. They overlap, sure, but they are not synonymous. Whether you say 'sixth' or 'sicth' is a variation in pronunciation. It cuts across accents. Some people with my accent say 'sixth', others with the same accent say 'sickth'.

bluecomputerscreen · 22/09/2024 20:34

I don't 😁I try to avoid saying it almost at all costs

Pringlebeak · 22/09/2024 20:35

RiksBottom · 22/09/2024 19:11

This has caused me a small crisis as i think I say six-th but with a harder (aspirated?) t - so sicks-t-th rather than a soft th. So I guess like eigh -t-th.

i am a weirdo

I do the same.

Blueberrycreampie · 22/09/2024 20:35

@Pebbles16 Yes just saying how I pronounce it - rightly or wrongly!

FloordrobeIsGoingToGetME · 22/09/2024 20:41

I say it differently if it's a date, or a fraction.

Date: Sic-th
Fraction: Six-th

Did you actually look in a dictionary?

The OED has the British English pronunciation as “/sɪk(s)θ/”. The brackets mean that the s is optional in British English. Telling me to look in a dictionary without checking yourself is a bit silly.

Sick-th and Fith, and I’m usually a pedant.

Six-th and fif-th remind me of my (much loved but a bit condescending) dad who says things like ‘theETer’ (theatre) and ‘rest-ROHN’ (restaurant)
