Just that question. I hear it pronounced "sicth" by the majority of tv presenters but I always say "sicsth".

OP posts:

Can I add cuttle-ry to this? Does my head in.

Wed ens day
Li-bruh-ry
But admit to sickth
And fith.
And sand-widge

I'm not sure I'll be able to say these last 3 again without flinching though.

Zingy123 · 22/09/2024 18:50

The right way 😀

Our head of sixth form pronounces it sick form it drives me mad. It's six-th.

SunsetSkylane · 22/09/2024 18:55

Sang-widge is v common in Scotland.

RobinHumphries · 22/09/2024 19:00

I pronounce it sicks with final s like the s in snake

Statsworry1 · 22/09/2024 14:18

Same with fifth…I’ve heard people say ‘fith’! It’s so annoying!

Guilty!

saying a f before a th seems so unnatural to me.

What, why?

That's just literally not the word.

tinytemper66 · 22/09/2024 19:08

Depends on accent and dialect I suppose. I say fith but say sicth

Sang-widge is v common in Scotland.

And in patches of south Wales, it’s how my dad says it.

Just dialects at the end of the day and I quite like regional variations.

Sandwidge sounds weird to me too. Isn't it sandwich or preferably "butty"?

Where I'm from it's pronounced sang-which Grin

RiksBottom · 22/09/2024 19:11

This has caused me a small crisis as i think I say six-th but with a harder (aspirated?) t - so sicks-t-th rather than a soft th. So I guess like eigh -t-th.

i am a weirdo

Summertimer · 22/09/2024 19:14

Sixth is a difficult one - a similar but more obvious letter adding pronunciation that’s currently commonly heard this when some BBC continuity announcers milk every extra s and z they can get out of ‘BBC Sounds’

WhimsicalMoth · 22/09/2024 19:15

Oh this has really made me think.
How do we pronounce Wednesday ???
I think I might be committing a "wensday" type crime here 😳

RobinHumphries · 22/09/2024 19:24

The word is six. Where is the th?

Blueberrycreampie · 22/09/2024 19:28

Sixth - always pronounce the x then the th. I'm Scottish if that makes a difference?

Summertimer · 22/09/2024 19:28

Well it’s not Wed-nes-day, that’s a bit like that mythical place Wem-ber-ley or people who pronounce player play-ya

RobinHumphries · 22/09/2024 19:29

For those pronouncing it sixth how do you pronounce 6th then?

Blueberrycreampie · 22/09/2024 19:30

Wed ens day.

This thread is about the pronunciation of 6th not the pronunciation of 6. I think you’ve misread something somewhere.

RobinHumphries · 22/09/2024 19:32

Oh yes my comprehension skills are poor today. In that case sick th

RightSedFred · 22/09/2024 19:32

Sixth as per OP.

Also library, not liebree.

BringMeTea · 22/09/2024 19:47

OH MY GOD, this is such a bete noire for me. Very very few people pronounce this correctly these days. I have no idea why. If you can say six you say six-th. Rage... lazy... mutters... 😬

The outright worst thing at the moment is this relatively new southern accent variant where w pops up everywhere. Example - a mewll dewll

Pebbles16 · 22/09/2024 19:57

Pat888 · 22/09/2024 14:49

Siksth

Exactly like this
