How Do You Pronounce 6th?

Just that question. I hear it pronounced "sicth" by the majority of tv presenters but I always say "sicsth".

Sixth = sicsth. You say the number six, then add a 'th' sound. 'Sicth' sounds odd to me.

Doesn't that come out as a two syllable "six-thuh" though?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 22/09/2024 15:55

I say
sick th
fif th
lie brerry
wenzday
and scone to rhyme with gone

Button28384738 · 22/09/2024 15:58

Same way as you!

Circumferences · 22/09/2024 16:04

I say sixf.
(Or "fiff") !

HowManyDaysUntillXmas · 22/09/2024 16:05

Six-th

unsync · 22/09/2024 16:05

This is giving me Cumberbatch's penguins.

Yes! You must have been listening to the same journalists as me recently, OP. It's been driving me mad, just say the word properly, it's not difficult!

Although samwidge, is of course, correct.

Uggggh!
Sang-wich sounds horrendous 🙈🙈🙈

HowManyDaysUntillXmas · 22/09/2024 16:07

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 22/09/2024 15:02

I say:

Sixth (sicks-th)
Fifth
Libree
Wenzday (do people really say Wed-ness-day?)
Samwidge (though that is one I do wonder about sometimes, as it's not really hard to say sandwidge)

Libree?
Do you mean? Lie-brair-ree?

BobbyBiscuits · 22/09/2024 16:08

I probably pronounce it Sickf. I think the news presenters must just be doing some old school RP kind of vibes.

Birdscratch · 22/09/2024 16:09

I don’t know! I’ve been trying to figure out which way I say it and they both sound right!

OpalGoose · 22/09/2024 16:11

It's one of these things that now I've heard it I will always hear it and it will make me cringe 😬

I definitely heard sang-wich on the BBC yesterday. 😱

NewName24 · 22/09/2024 16:11

I think if I am quickly pointing out something to someone... "The 6th one along" it comes out more like "sick th"
But it I were doing the Christmas reading "In the 6th month, the Angel Gabriel....." then I would annunciate more clearly and make sure I said "sick s th"

BuzzieLittleBee · 22/09/2024 16:13

I'll add secetree (secretary) into the mix...

Hedjwitch · 22/09/2024 16:14

Oooh this is my top pet peeve.
Cant bear hearing it pronounced as sikth. Its just plain wrong!
It is six th.
I have been known to shout at the TV.

LoobyDoop2 · 22/09/2024 16:14

Six-th
Wenzday
Sand-widge

I used to have a teacher who said “Weddens-day”. Most odd.

UnctuousUnicorns · 22/09/2024 16:17

Scentsless · 22/09/2024 14:21

I think I probably pronounce it as fith. Not sure how I could get my tongue round pronouncing the f in the middle.

I can't really manage the "th" sound at the end, so I probably end up saying it more like "fift" and "sixt" (my DOB too). I have had to work done on my front teeth after injury. Tbh I don't really care. People can work out what I mean. 🤷‍♀️

3beesinmybonnet · 22/09/2024 16:25

Sicsth, because it's six with th tagged on.

When I'm in charge I shall employ someone to poke presenters with a sharp stick every time they say sikth. The sticks in BBC studios will also give a non lethal electric shock, because they really should know better.

HowManyDaysUntillXmas · 22/09/2024 16:07

Libree?
Do you mean? Lie-brair-ree?

No, 'libree', with a little hint of a r + schwa in the middle - so perhaps more accurately something like 'lib-(ruh)-ree'.

Edit: of course, 'li' pronounced as 'lie'.

UnctuousUnicorns · 22/09/2024 16:35

LoobyDoop2 · 22/09/2024 16:14

Six-th
Wenzday
Sand-widge

I used to have a teacher who said “Weddens-day”. Most odd.

Time to reclaim our Norse heritage, and rename it "Wodinsday", I say.

KateTheShrew · 22/09/2024 16:36

PollyPeep · 22/09/2024 15:31

No, because the 'th' has no vowel sound after it. The way you've written it (six-thuh) would sound odd, I agree, because you've added a vowel sound. Th' and 'thuh' do not sound the same.

Edited

li-bree here - two syllables
Febyery
wensdy
samwidge

but I definitely do the double sibillants in 5th and 6th

Sixth not sikth.

It's not a k in there it's an x. I hate when people say it as a k.
