My dad is ill and I don’t know what to do

I live in Scotland for work and my parents live in Cornwall.

Two weeks ago my dad had a bit of an upset stomach. My mum brushed it off as nothing serious and bought him some Immodium. After 3 or 4 days, I called her to check how he was, he was still poorly so I asked if she'd rung the doctors. She said no.

About a week in, I said again, she should ring the doctors. Immodium was doing nothing. She said no, again, that it would work itself out.

After 10 days, she called the doctors who said he should have flat coke, some Immodium and it'll go away. He has done some tests at the doctors and they've basically shrugged, said it's not E-Coli. and to keep doing what he's doing. They said if it's anything, it's gastroenteritis but that makes 0 sense as my mum hasn't caught it.

It didn't so I came home last night to try and help out.

My dad hasn't eaten in 2 weeks. He's lost 40 pounds. Water makes him sick. He is going to the toilet at least 10 times an hour. The doctors don't want anything to do with him. He's being sick, nothing is coming up anymore because his system is totally empty. He can barely keep his eyes open. 111 has sent a doctor but it's "low priority" and they don't know what time they'll be here. He won't get in the car to go to hospital and between me and my mum we can't get him down, 111 said not to call 999 as he's already in the system.

I'm only 25. I'm so scared. I don’t know what I can do. He can't keep anything down and nobody wants to help us.

My Dad had this and ended up with acute kidney injury from dehydration please push for admission and IV fluids urgently.

Wafflesandcrepes · 07/09/2024 15:43

I’d make sure you mention his aortic aneursym to the paramedics.

We have, they're not concerned by it at all

He could have developed a hernia from all the retching he has been doing. Well done on getting him help.

The lump predates this illness :(

Try and relax now. Have a brew and calm down. You have done a grand job for your Dad, and he is in clinical hands now who will govern him the right treatment. Get a shower then hopefully by evening visiting you'll be able to go and see him 😊

My Dad had very similar, it turned out to be a hernia in his groin which had shifted and was pushing into his small intestine and essentially strangling it. He was the same with very bad sickness and not being able to keep anything down. They managed to manipulate it out of the way and he felt immediate relief but he does still need a hernia op.

Please ring 999 now, nobody can tell you not to do so. Don't let anyone else tell you what to do, go with your gut, ring them now I would have done so hours ago, good luck xx

He didn't give the full history to the GP on the phone. This wouldn't be dealt with on the phone. Does he tend to minimise?

Glad he's being sorted, now.

Miyagi99 · 07/09/2024 15:56

They will let you visit once he’s on a ward by the way, just let him get settled in first but you can take some clothes, food, paper, book etc later on for him.

SadGirlAutumn · 07/09/2024 14:57

They said if we called it isn't an emergency and it would be 12+ hours, that if we call we're wasting resources on a busy day for them etc

12+ is better than not at all…

He did, our GP is just supremely useless. My mum had diverticulitis earlier in the year and they just prescribed antibiotics over the phone and left her to it. The days of the GP actually caring about their patients is long gone

My mum will follow him over, but my car isn't here so I won't get over for visiting hours today I don't think

It sounds great your Dad minimises his issues. Your Mum might do this too. I think you need to go to the hospital and make sure your parents are not making light of his symptoms and how long it has been ongoing including weight loss. I hope your Dad recovers. Try not to stress too much.

Hopefully it's something like that but I just can't help but worry

Also with my relative who had diverticulitis, the GP was useless and said it was gastroenteritis and would last for two weeks and basically to go away. She couldn’t keep anything down and was delirious with a high temperature. If she’d been given antibiotics by the GP that would have helped. I hope you feel better now OP and that your dad is in safe hands. My relative recovered quickly once she got to hospital. They did a CT scan which is how they diagnosed the diverticulitis. However I also had a panic moment where I thought it would be cancer. Fingers crossed lovely.

Bristolnewcomer · 07/09/2024 16:00

I’m glad he’s going to hospital and hope once there he’ll get all the right tests and so on. Is he at treliske? You should be able to follow over with stuff for him later if he’s being taken in. It’s not exactly “visiting” and your mum probably won’t pack much

I do wonder if he has it as well, but his temperature doesn't seem too high? His blood pressure is okay, on the low side, his sugars are okay, heartbeat etc., okay, breathing is 16 in bed which is all fine, which is why it's such a worry

add symptoms.cant roll his tongue-anything that is deemed emergency.this is ridiculous

He's been taken in. We would never, ever lie to get him taken in quicker.

Ah okay and yes i just saw your mum had div as well so you’d probably be more able to spot the signs. I hope that they give your dad a proper diagnosis whatever it is. Poor man and how scary for you.

Never ever ever do this. There are finite ambulances on the road and everyone must be triaged. This kind of thing kills other people.

He won't let me in the room with him, I'm so worried his gagging is going to burst his aortic aneurysm or something awful, nobody is listening to us

Does he have an aortic embolism? if he has , did you tell 101?
