More Than Words by Extreme

Anybody remember this song?

I was early teens and thought it was the most amazing, perfect and romantic song I'd ever heard in my life 🤣 The video was easy on the eye too.

I suddenly remembered it recently and searched for it on YouTube. Was surprised that it had nowhere near the effect on me...in fact none😂

Just really interested if anyone here remembers when it came out, how they felt at the time and how they feel now when they listen to it!

Didn't expect this thread to take off.. . I'm currently listening back to see it back through the eyes of the posts but I can't keep up because people keep posting 🤣
So far it still seems like a very romantic song to me

It’s always linked to Mr Big’s Be With You in my head. They must have come out around the same time. My music app thinks so too, as it always plays these 2 songs together whenever I give it free reign.

Snap! Logged on to say exactly this, I prefer Mr Big.

Also to the op, you asked where it's been heard- I've heard it quite alot recently on Absolute Radio or radio X !

PerfectYear321 · 06/09/2024 23:59

There are too many links I need to check out, FFS! 😭

I used to love this song as a teen. How innocent I was to not realise the connotations of the lyrics...sad really.

Let me start by saying that extreme are now in their 60s 😱. That's scary. I was obsessed with them as a 14/15 year old. Utterly obsessed. Three friends were as well. I don't think teenagers go through band obsessions in the same way now? I got to see them on the stop the world tour in 1992, not long after the Freddie Mercury tribute. Now I listen to them for the nostalgia value and the new album is OK but I know what you mean about it not being the same anymore. I think time and place was everything, and people who read a lot into MTW are maybe looking at it through a modern lens. I would give almost anything for a time machine to go back and listen to tapes in my room with my friends. One of them has passed away now 😢 <takes maudlin sentimental hat off>

The fact that they are in their 60s actually makes me feel good 🙈
They were so good looking and unattainable back then. They still are, because they probably wouldn't be interested in women in their late 40s. I'm sick of how this world works. In a nice world they would be interested in us, but in this world they most probably wouldn't be and would be looking at women in their 20s. Right now I don't really care 😬😭

Are they actually in their 60s?! I don't think so... I think they will be in their 50s

Early 90's was great for soppy love songs.

Stay by Shakespears Sister
Why by Annie Lennox
Nothing Compares to you by Sinead O'connor
Everything I Do, Bryan Adams
Goodnight Girl, Wet Wet Wet
Would I lie to you Charles and Eddie
I Will Always Love You, Whitney
Without you, Maria Carey
Stay, East 17
Dreams, Gabrielle
Love is all around, Wet Wet Wet
Bed of Roses, Bon Jovi
Everybody Hurts, REM
Unbreak My Heart, Toni Braxton

I could go on all night. Such a perfect sound track to go with all my teenage crushes and first loves back then. I can remember boyfriend making me a mix tape of love songs and another one quoting song lyrics in love letters.

Talking of songs which change meaning when you listen to the lyrics, I thought Bed Of Roses was an amazing love song when I first heard it. It’s about a serial cheater.

PerfectYear321 · 07/09/2024 01:15

Ok, so I've just re-watched it several times (😂) and I really can't see it as anything but a romantic song. The guy with long hair and dark nails is incredibly dreamy 🤣. Even if he's now 60 I would be willing to show him a bit more than words 😭

whatsupluckyducky · 07/09/2024 01:20

Yes, it used to have such an effect on me!

DrCoconut · 07/09/2024 01:27

@PerfectYear321 Of the first lineup Gary and Paul are 63. Pat and Nuno are late 50s. So we're both right 😬

PerfectYear321 · 07/09/2024 01:36

I'm guessing the guy playing the guitar's voice wasn't as good as the main guy.

If they had brought out another single I would have bought it just to see long haired guy. I'm pretty annoyed they never did

I went and watched the video on YouTube and was instantly transferred back to my halls of residence and sneaking my first boyfriend in and listening to the song.

Now I'm a state of middle aged angst. Where has my life gone?

SpiderGwen · 07/09/2024 02:48

Damn you!

I hated this song. I thought it was sentimental rubbish. And now it’s a running through my mind on a loop.

Why is it that you remember all the words to the songs you you wish you could blot out entirely??

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 07/09/2024 05:32

Absolutely not buying this is about sex. It's about a relationship that's just based on words because the couple have drifted apart surely.

I can't be bothered to RTFT but surely someone has mentioned how un-cheery the lyrics to MmmBop are?

Extreme's most recent album.

What do you mean? They released loads of singles. It's just that none of them were power ballads. Get The Funk Out was released around that era, but a totally different sound. Way better in my humble opinion.

HelenWheels · 07/09/2024 06:18

i think i probably had it on 12 inch vinyl - loved it

Downandout43 · 07/09/2024 06:27

My ex husband told me this song was about anal sex!!

It was the only song one of my housemates knew how to play on the guitar. He'd sing it repeatedly in a really cheesy style when he'd had a few, complete with the knocks on the guitar body. Fortunately we all thought it was as funny as he did (we were in our mid twenties rather than impressionable teens).

Lucky girl's 😬

OP posts:
Steppenwolfe · 07/09/2024 07:50

Where does it say sex?
It doesn't. It's about showing you love someone instead of just saying it.

Sorry misread your post.

I know exactly what you mean. I went to bed with that sodding song going through my head. I woke up with it still going. It's been hours now. HOURS.

@PerfectYear321 I'm taking you off my Christmas card list for this 😡
