Anybody remember this song?

I was early teens and thought it was the most amazing, perfect and romantic song I'd ever heard in my life 🤣 The video was easy on the eye too.

I suddenly remembered it recently and searched for it on YouTube. Was surprised that it had nowhere near the effect on me...in fact none😂

Just really interested if anyone here remembers when it came out, how they felt at the time and how they feel now when they listen to it!

I remember slow dancing to this song aged 16 with a boy that would become my boyfriend for the following 3 years. Every time I hear this song now I instantly get transported to being 16 again and all those wonderful memories of falling in love for the first time

DrFroggy · 06/09/2024 22:44

It’s definitely saying you have to have sex with me to show me you love me. Its not a very nice song.

MeAgainAndAgain · 06/09/2024 22:44

Oh I absolutely love this song. I guess it reminds me of a simpler time in my life when things were just easier. And if you just listen to the voices and harmonies it’s gorgeous.

Which one is Nuno Bettencourt?

@PerfectYear321 long hair, did guitar and harmonies on More Than Words.

Now that I've tried to
Talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands
And touch me
Hold me close, don't ever let me go

Definitely about sex!

Close your eyes and just reach out your hands? How is that about sex? Sound more like a romantic embrace - and maybe A snog.

like the “it’s in his kiss” song… love can be felt in the kiss/touch. Not sex!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 06/09/2024 22:46

Oooh yes now you are talking! Beautiful song and great video too ... has Carla Gugino on it and she's so gorgeous. What a proper shit that boyfriend was Grin

Stepawayfromthefridgenow · 06/09/2024 22:46

God, so long ago, early teens
Simple times…I remember listening to it on my little radio Walkman at night in bed-radio station Atlantic 252 💓

Kw1234hhggf · 06/09/2024 22:46

Wow! People are so desperate to make something out of nothing! I hear it as showing love in actions and behaviour rather than just the words ‘I love you’. Loads of posters on here complain that partners say the words but don’t act them out, that is what the song is about isn’t it?

Clingfilm · 06/09/2024 22:49

Didn't like it the summer it came out, it was on the radio a lot, I remember watching it on top of the pops on a caravan holiday.

Brian Adams had been number one for an age with another slow ballad, I was all about the novelty hits aged 11 but a girl at school who was much more advanced than me was in love with Nuno. I didn't like long haired boys then and I still don't now 😄

I do however like the song now, it's lovely.

Bruisername · 06/09/2024 22:49

everything can be turned into sex if you’ve got a dirty mind!

I love Tracey Chapmans Baby Can I Hold You - but you could misconstrue that and to me it’s the same sort of message - show don’t tell (but not sex!!)

itsalwaysthesame · 06/09/2024 22:50

Must be around the same age you! Yep I loved it at the time but doesn't have the same effect on me.

Strange as only yesterday was thinking of maxi priest and started listening to some guys have all the luck, took me back and I still love it!

longdistanceclaraclara · 06/09/2024 22:50

My favourite song. I still love Nuno.

imforeverblowingbuttons · 06/09/2024 22:54

I loved it. I fell in love when that song was out and I remember breaking up and being heartbroken. Then we met up to talk about getting back together and I literally wrote the lyrics down and gave them to my bf . It was so cringy but at the time it felt so important and genuine. (God knows what the 17 year old lad thought 😂)

Holidayhell22 · 06/09/2024 22:55

I liked the song and adored. Nuno. I was into men with long hair, still like thick glossy hair.
Does anyone remember Dan Reed Network?
I saw them when they supported Bon Jovi many moons ago. They were breathtaking good.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 06/09/2024 22:57

I lived abroad around that time and some of the guys in our friendship group could play the guitar. One of them played this regularly and we'd sing along. Beautiful vocal on the original, lovely to sing and do the harmonies.

CobraChicken · 06/09/2024 23:04

chergar · 06/09/2024 22:36

No it isn't - it's basically saying words are cheap you say you love me but your actions don't show it, if you treated me like an equal, with respect and kindness then that would show your love for me. I always took it that the person in this song was in a relationship with someone who treated them like dirt but said they loved them - if the treated them better then they wouldn't have to say they loved them as their actions would show they did.

That's exactly how I interpret the lyrics.
But with either possible interpretation, it's quite unfortunate that the first time I really, properly listened to the words and actually thought about their meaning was during our wedding day first dance 😂

RainBow725 · 06/09/2024 23:05

I loved this song and think I have the album it's on somewhere. I even saw them in concert at Hammersmith Apollo back in the day. Nostalgia! ☺️

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 06/09/2024 23:08

You're a cynical lot! It's about doing the little things that let someone know you love them, not about sex! It's a sweet song and not surprisingly was well liked by many at the time.

I'm surprised so many people happen to hear this song. I had to actively seek it because I remembered it. I'm intrigued where people are hearing it

Ahh this is one of the ones DP puts on when he's had a few and is feeling all lovey dovey- along with All 4 one - I swear and Charles & Eddie would I lie to you for good measure!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 06/09/2024 23:10

And I'm late 30s he's early 30s but we both share a love of 80s and 90s music 😀

TheFireflies · 06/09/2024 23:11

I once sang a perfect unrehearsed harmonised rendition of this in a pub at 2am with the lead singer of a Bon Jovi tribute band who then assumed it meant I wanted to get into his pants (I did not).

in my head I remember it as perfect. We were quite drunk.

postitnot · 06/09/2024 23:11

I loved this song, hearing it takes me back to being 16....But even then I realised it was all about sex!

Always was 'our' song for my first BF, I don't remember seeing the video-not so romantic that storyline!!

PerfectYear321 · 06/09/2024 23:14

DustyGrapevine · 06/09/2024 22:33

Have you seen the Jimmy Fallon & Jack Black version?

No,!

It's a creep fest about coersion. If I had to choose between you and someone else, if you don't put out I'll pick them. I've always really disliked it.

Lyrics:
Saying "I love you"
Is not the words I want to hear from you
It's not that I want you
Not to say but if you only knew
How easy, it would be to show me how you feel
More than words is all you have to do to make it real
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
'Cause I'd already know

What would you do
If my heart was torn in two?
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say
If I took those words away?
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying "I love you"

Now that I've tried to
Talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands and touch me
Hold me close, don't ever let me go

More than words is all I ever needed you to show
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
'Cause I'd already know
