Does anyone know if I can take a salad to the airport and through security?

I hate airport food and I would like to take a packed lunch with my to the airport and through security. I have a craving for a dressed salad. Does anyone know if I can take a salad dressed in mayonnaise through security or would the mayonnaise be considered a liquid? Will I play it safe and only bring sandwiches?

You have a craving? Are you going to the airport now? How much Mayo do you plan on putting on?

boredscottishpirate · 05/09/2024 17:37

This the weirdest thing ever.

Precipice · 05/09/2024 17:39

If it's mostly salad with a bit of mayonnaire, it'll be fine. It'll be solid food rather than liquid.

I've had no problems (beyond having to show it) bringing through security a thermos with pasta (which had some sauce).

Yes, it’s fine.

smallbluethings · 05/09/2024 17:40

Is it a specific craving that can only be met once you're through airport security? Hmm

Georgethecat1 · 05/09/2024 17:40

Should fine like others have said needs to be mainly solid food rather than liquid. I have to do the same due to being coeliac, so always take a pack up

MissFlimpkin · 05/09/2024 17:41

You're allowed 100ml of liquid and I don't expect that much on a salad, even if it were to be an issue with security.

But if you're craving it, why not eat it now?

Or take a small clear pot of mayo and dress your salad when you need?

SeaToSki · 05/09/2024 17:41

Yes, as long as the mayo is already on the salad leaves and not in a separate container to add later.

notimagain · 05/09/2024 17:54

@Blueflam

Given for the purposes of the relevant rules HMG state the following are forbidden:

  • liquid or semi-liquid foods, for example soup, jam, honey and syrups…”

and given some airports have a reputation when it comes to this sort of thing
to be safe you could stick the mayo in a <100 ml container..stick it in the standard ziplock bag etc…..……then dress salad when airside.

There was a rumour doing the rounds at one time that a worker at an airport I will not name failed to get a pork pie airside one day because the gel content……

Sad thing is things got so daft some places some times it was believable.

I have been stopped with branston pickle at security. The agent said he felt it should not be classed as a liquid and went to check with his boss. They both came over and said that regretfully I couldnt take it through (it was a gift for DH). They both said DH had great taste in sandwiches though and they hoped the rules would change soon. I left on good terms with them and said I hoped they could take my 3 small bottles home for their own lunches 🤣

booksunderthebed · 05/09/2024 19:00

Yes, I have done this. I think i even put the dressing in a tiny ziplock bag or container and stuck it inside the salad, and emptied it before eating. I like my salad dressed just before eating.

TheChosenTwo · 05/09/2024 19:01

Why don’t you just eat the salad before you go through security?

Kitkat1523 · 05/09/2024 19:03

I wouldn’t risk it

Thunderpants88 · 05/09/2024 19:04

My Mum once took a full raw large chicken through security in her hand luggage 😬🤦‍♀️

Badbadbunny · 05/09/2024 19:06

Our son was a very fussy eater, so we took his packed lunch through with us. His bag was selected for inspection, so we had to wait ages for the security guy to get around to opening and checking it. Apparently it was flagged up for the jelly in the pork pie! Had it confiscated and then had to wait whilst they put the bag through the x-ray again! Son was pretty miffed they took his pie off him!

dementedpixie · 05/09/2024 19:09

If the mayo is on the salad already it's fine. If taking separately then the mayo would need to be in a container 100mls or under and go in the clear liquids bag.

UltramarineViolet · 05/09/2024 19:09

I'm sure you will be fine as long as it isn't swimming in dressing. I often take snacks of all types in my hand luggage and I've never been challenged on it.

amerthecat · 05/09/2024 19:10

I had a small Morrison's trifle confiscated.

DerekFaker · 05/09/2024 19:10

A massive salad?

Moier · 05/09/2024 19:12

Take a salad and sachets of mayo... or travel bottle of mayo..( l took travel bottle of honey and mustard dressing) they sell salad bowls to take away.
Just gone through Leeds airport.. new security scanners. Don't have to take anything out of bags now

This is one of the saddest sentences I have ever read. 😔

Just think of the damage you could do with the jelly and the custard!

What is airport food?

Overpriced food bought in the airport

ChickenandaCanofCoke · 05/09/2024 19:18

"I had a small Morrison's trifle confiscated"

🤣🤣

Imagine being behind the OP at security. Excuuuuse me, is mayonnaise a liquid if it's on a massive salad I craved several days ago? Ffs, just get a salad at Boots.
