Does anyone know if I can take a salad to the airport and through security?

I hate airport food and I would like to take a packed lunch with my to the airport and through security. I have a craving for a dressed salad. Does anyone know if I can take a salad dressed in mayonnaise through security or would the mayonnaise be considered a liquid? Will I play it safe and only bring sandwiches?

Would it not be easier just to buy a salad in the shop after passing security? Like a boots meal deal or something. I wouldnt take sandwiches through either. I start my holiday with expensive bought £7 meal deals every time lol

"Overpriced food bought in the airport"

I thought £4.99 for a meal deal was pretty decent. Needed a big bottle of water for the flight anyway

Doesn't that then make it ...airport food? 😂

We took fruit we'd prepared beforehand e.g. strawberries, grapes, etc and they were fine to take. Just take the damn salad and have the mayo in sachets or within the salad beforehand.

Is high street boots meal deal airport food? Not like an airport cafe so to speak, which I thought it was they meant

Why buy food at the airport if you have the ingredients to make your preferred salad at home?

They're ripping you off! £4.99 at Boots Manchester airport last month and £5.50 WHSmith. Bloody love a meal deal

who wants to fuck about cleaning and carting around the salad container, cutlery, etc

Branster · 05/09/2024 19:28

I'm all for planning all my trips so that I travel efficiently and in comfort as far as I can make it so.
But I've never ever given any thought to food like this.
And a salad of all things!
Just take it and assume there's a 50% chance it will be confiscated.
Because UK airports are backwards with screening- all unnecessary when there is state of the art technology out there to make security screening quick and thorough.

viques · 05/09/2024 19:29

M and S cafe do nice little sachets of Mayo. Why not take a couple of those .

I would put the dressing in a separate and easily accessible container or sachet - so you can dispose of it if they ask you to, though maybe you can do 2 x 100ml sachets etc to have sufficient dressing.

And for all those saying "er just buy one after security":
• likely it is a crap salad
• cost 3x what you'd normally pay
• we flew through Mcr T2 and could not get a meal in time because there was a long queue for EVERYWHERE, even WHSmiths - and forget about sitting down! Think we ended up stood by a wall angrily eating granola bars. I will never fly out of Mcr without a packed meal now.

Mansionscoldandgrey · 05/09/2024 19:49

If it's a massive salad, it may need to go in the hold.

I have been stopped with branston pickle at security. The agent said he felt it should not be classed as a liquid and went to check with his boss. They both came over and said that regretfully I couldnt take it through (it was a gift for DH). They both said DH had great taste in sandwiches though and they hoped the rules would change soon. I left on good terms with them and said I hoped they could take my 3 small bottles home for their own lunches 🤣

Rice pudding caused consternation in security liquid or not? - first holiday with child and she loved it so we were taking it just in case the great country of Spain had no suitable food - I know we were total wankers thinking back!

It got confiscated but only after quite a big debate.

Blueflam · 05/09/2024 20:00

I have GI issues and I can't eat raw onion and raw carrots that's in a lot of salad and also too much lettuce and greens also. I ate kale earlier in the week and I paid for it.

I have a craving for Waldorf salad made my way without the nuts and with chicken pieces instead. So chicken, celery, apples, grapes and mayonnaise.

Airport food is expensive crap and there's a lot that I just can't eat. Same goes for prepacked sandwiches.

I will make a massive lunch for travels.

That's a great idea. Think I will call into my local hotel for a lunch and to take some sachets of mayonnaise.

I would say it's more of a liquid than a solid. Anything that is a liquid/gel/paste consistency counts. You could pour rice pudding...slowly

I have a plan in place. It will be reusable and then when I get to the hotel out forgein I will wash and dry them and use the container for filling up at the breakfast buffet for my lunch possibly.

I detect a segue into the controversial breakfast buffet for lunch topic

The queues go down so fast though. Angrily eating granola bars 😂 I've seen your type, 5 minutes after I've waited for someone to vacate a seat and trotted off for my meal deal. You make for good people watching though so thank you
