Prompted by having to do it this morning. The slimy textures, the tangled hairs of various lengths, the sulphurous odour. Just revolts me 🤢

Is there a better way?

Or, is there a worse household job?

Buy a mesh cover or similar item. Shower trap cover, hair trap on Google

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/09/2024 09:21

Personally, when I had two dds with long hair still at home, I always found it very satisfying to fish all that hairy gunk out.

Onehappymam · 05/09/2024 09:21

I find it disgusting and satisfying in equal measure.

SusanSHelit · 05/09/2024 09:24

It's not the worst, that honour goes to cleaning the cats litter tray, but it's definitely up there with the grimmest of jobs

I got a long plughole unclogger thingy from I think b&m. You shove it down the plug hole and it drags all the gunk out. It's utterly disgusting but also strangely satisfying

Pinkywoo · 05/09/2024 09:24

It's the best job! I let it build up so the water barely drains so I can pull out a massive squid of hair, so satisfying!

user7853156780 · 05/09/2024 09:27

I keep an old toothbrush in the shower and give it a good scrub every other day or so…Hoovering the stairs is without a doubt the worst job!

Bramshott · 05/09/2024 09:27

Ha - we have exactly that shower trap, and me and 2 DDs with long hair - I feel your pain OP!

Boowaoshah · 05/09/2024 09:29

I live for it. So satisfying 🤣

MonsteraMama · 05/09/2024 09:30

It's definitely one of the most interesting chores with three people in the house with very long, thick hair who all shed like golden retrievers. I am equal measures fascinated and disgusted every time I pull the slimy ginger and blonde cthulu from the depths.

Cleaning a particulary shitty loo is the worst I reckon. Bleurgh!

Kucinghitam · 05/09/2024 09:54

Thing with cleaning loos and litter trays is that the revoltingness is entirely expected because, well, it's where the pee and poo goes.

To me, the hair trap is different because it's just hair and shower water, but then mysterious dark magic happens in that eldritch cauldron to produce this smelly stringy slimy writhing thing...

I completely agree with you 🤢 And your description has made it ten times worse 🤮

Emily1583 · 05/09/2024 10:09

I'd rather clean ten shower traps than one oven.

dementedpixie · 05/09/2024 10:14

@Kucinghitam I have the same shower trap and it can be very stinky and gunky. You know you can take it apart for easier cleaning using a Phillips screwdriver? You probably know that already but there's been previous threads where they didn't know.

Me too, I absolutely love doing it! You have to be patient to get a good haul though!

nomud · 05/09/2024 10:17

For me the worst task is the kitchen bin, especially if it’s been warm 🤢 I have to put on an incense to cope 😂

I did know that, but it's definitely helpful to let everyone else know too!

It's the worst part of the heave-inducing process to me - I have to get a screwdriver all gunky and there is a particularly intense build-up of slime in the thus uncovered parts of the trap 🤮

Exactly!
I can deal with poo and wee any day.
Slimy plugholes with coiled wet hair and eggy smells... 🤮

SusanSHelit · 05/09/2024 20:49

You'd think I'd be OK with poo and wee, I work in Healthcare and deal with some pretty heinous things that come out of people on a daily basis, but whatever it is that my cat eats when she's out and about creates the smelliest poo I've ever encountered. It's truly eye watering. Like a pp with the kitchen bin, I have to put on an incense to cope.

At least with the stinky shower trap I have an over bath shower so I can run the tap to keep the worst of the eggy smell away (and then drown it in bleach which you can't do with the cat's stuff)

CelestialNexus · 05/09/2024 20:50

No

YourWinter · 05/09/2024 20:55

I have these strainers over every plug hole. Stops hair, earrings etc from going down the drain, stops spiders coming up.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 05/09/2024 20:58

Don’t mind when it’s just my hair, hate it with a passion when I’ve had guests and its other people drain hair. 😩

Trolltrotters · 05/09/2024 21:16

It's hands down the most revolting job ever. I always put it off, which makes it worse.

I have to do it tomorrow. It's been weeks, and it'll be a horror. All the slime and hair Shock and cleaning it is a bastard, all the gunge just goes down another sink to clog that up.

How do you take the thing apart? I have thought about just buying a new cover thing each time - I wouldn't, obviously very wasteful but I've been tempted
