Prompted by having to do it this morning. The slimy textures, the tangled hairs of various lengths, the sulphurous odour. Just revolts me 🤢

Is there a better way?

Or, is there a worse household job?

It's horrible, but I get a lot of brownie points for doing that and dealing with other unpleasant household tasks. Cleaning out sink u-bends is pretty bad.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/09/2024 17:01

Our shower trap is easy to clean.
The bath plug hole otoh...I use a dossil when it's draining but it lets enough hair through over time to accumulate. The only way I know to deal with it (short of strong drain unblocking chemicals) is guddling around with a piece of wire coat hanger bent into a small hook on one end.

I noticed draining was very slow yesterday and extracted a lump like a small somewhat slimy mouse.

I find it disgusting and satisfying in equal measure.

This! Feels good when it's done (and you've stopped gagging 🤢)...

superstar63 · 06/09/2024 17:33

I have looked at this type of thing before but some of the reviews state that they get drain smells from using this.

Is this anything you have found as we did have this problem for a while and could not find the source but have. been putting bleach down the shower drain which is the same as the one pictured but if this works it would be amazing but I am worried about the drain smell?

I have these strainers over every plug hole. Stops hair, earrings etc from going down the drain, stops spiders coming up.

I hate to tell you this but I have those too, and having come face to face with a ginormous spider in the shower one morning, I realised the strainer had been pushed slightly to the side…

🕷

@Blackberriesandcobwebs I was going to say the dishwasher filter- so gross!

Riverswims · 06/09/2024 17:45

we use a metal version of those cup and mushroom things in the cuspidor in the dental surgery, they're not all that; loads of debris still goes down into the next filter 😳and those sink trap with holes being discussed make me feel peculiar so I don't want one of those either 🤢

Kucinghitam · 05/09/2024 10:18

I did know that, but it's definitely helpful to let everyone else know too!

It's the worst part of the heave-inducing process to me - I have to get a screwdriver all gunky and there is a particularly intense build-up of slime in the thus uncovered parts of the trap 🤮

I have a bathroom screwdriver that is solely for this job. It is always on hand, so it gets done fairly often and never gets that bad

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 06/09/2024 17:52

Long haired wife and daughters who all use mooncups and empty them in the shower...DH is a good man 😬

Cheesecakelunch · 06/09/2024 17:53

Absolutely disgusting!
Try having to clean out your neighbours long hair and food bits from a shared gulley drain then. Vile. I complained to their landlord several times to get the message through to them😡

jaimelesoleil · 06/09/2024 17:53

Kucinghitam · 05/09/2024 09:39

That just made me heave!

Me too...I can only just cope with cleaning out my own hair...anybody else's just makes me want to throw up.

BasilParsley · 06/09/2024 18:00

Trust me, drain hair clearance is nothing compared with having to clean up dog vomit. I'm sure it's an odour that has been distilled and turned into concentrated form by the devil.

Even cat and human vomit is benign compared with the contents of a dog's stomach...

Rubyandscarlett · 06/09/2024 18:13

Yeah it's rank op l hate it!

lemonyfox · 06/09/2024 18:40

It's a manky job sure, but nothing is as tedious as putting away freshly washed clothes.

Kokomjolk · 06/09/2024 18:53

Yes it is the absolute worst. I have quite short hair but incredibly thick and heavy shedding. I have got into the habit of collecting the hair from each shower - it's not a good idea to let it build up since I seem to lose a good handful daily.

NoNameisGoodEnough · 06/09/2024 19:01

Cleaning the gunky drawer of the washing machine is my worst job.

Thisoldheartofmine · 06/09/2024 19:06

I'm too squeamish to read all posts , but my renewed search to solve this problem has lead me to order

I tend to do mine really regularly so it’s not too bad. I lift it up and give it a good rinse under the shower every time I shower too so it never gets too bad. Still not my favourite job. And there are two others in the house too which don’t get done as regularly.

I think I’ll get one of those ShowerShroom things that @Bey linked to and see if they work in all our showers.

Do they still let water sit to stop the odours coming up from the drains? I’ve noticed that if our cleaners are particularly thorough the bathroom smells as there isn’t any water in the drain.

Yea the water still sits in the top, I usually squirt a little bit of bleach in too after I've cleaned it.

I've had the shower shroom a year now and it's so easy especially if you keep on top of it the hair wraps around the little rubber black bit so I just pull it off and pop it in the bin then wash the whole thing in the sink and pop it back down. The old drain in the pictures pps have posted used to be a drama every time, it got suctioned it so I'd have to use force to pull it out then the minging water would splash up at me 🤢🤢🤢

no more fishing out strings of hair covered in gloop 🤢

OriginalUsername2 · 06/09/2024 19:29

Oh absolutely the worst job. I have to wear a mask and gloves to complete this task (still got a big box of them from covid. My biggest ick in the world is slime. I always get the intrusive thought of it being in my mouth for some reason.

The second worst is dealing with maggot-y bins. The third is runny cat poo on a carpet.

ellebelli · 06/09/2024 19:29

I work as a cleaner- so I clean not only my own but several other people's too .most days!!! 😫

stripeymonster · 06/09/2024 19:33

I'd probably rather clean the shower trap than do battle removing the hairs from the rollers on the vacuum. Yes that's despite having anti hair wrap version.

dementedpixie · 06/09/2024 19:44

Aposterhasnoname · 06/09/2024 16:44

Hang on, what? How? I’ve never seen any screws.

The screw is found inside the cylinder bit. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove it

Dd22 and I both use Veet/Nair/whatever cheap rip off we can get... drain never has any hair clogs ever.
