Is clearing out the shower hair trap the worst household task? Discuss.

Prompted by having to do it this morning. The slimy textures, the tangled hairs of various lengths, the sulphurous odour. Just revolts me 🤢

Is there a better way?

Or, is there a worse household job?

@Catsmere cotton bud gaffer taped to a bamboo gardening cane ??

I’ve just cleaned our cooker hood/extractor fan and I think we have a new contender for worst job. Let’s not mention that if I did it more often than annually it might be a tad less disgusting…

Ours has a filter we can just bung in the dishwasher! But the bad part is cleaning the rest of it especially the top - seems like nothing will shift the fossilised dust+grease carapace.

@Thisoldheartofmine thanks, I'll see if I can get a cane somewhere (no garden so never needed one).

We recently moved house and the previous owner clearly hadn’t cleaned the drain for years. I thought I was going to be sick when I saw it

The instruction manual says to clean the filter with tepid water and a mild detergent! 😂 I didn’t risk the dishwasher but have blasted the whole thing with a mixture of scalding water, fairy liquid and soda crystals.
The hood part looks significantly better but no one over about 6ft8 can come round in case they see the top.

Use a metal scourer and fairy liquid. It’s messy but it works.

@supersuperstar63 hi, I had this problem. Apparently the toilet waste goes through the same way so the only way to keep the smell out or to a minimum is to use those specific plugs and keep them fully pressed down.

I'd rather clean ten shower traps than one oven.

Absolutely 💯

@JJkate Yes, we have had probles in the past with it but its so awful to clean that new shroom thing seemed to good to be true.

My husband said it wouldnt work but I know someone on mumsnet had the same one as us and it worked for them so I thought if you keep the container full of water so the gases cant get through it would be ok.

To be fair my husband did not say "I told you so" although I know he wanted to lol

It is my Saturday morning treat. I keep a screwdriver in the bathroom cabinet just for that one purpose.

I've got a special knitting needle. Every now and then I poke about in the sink and pull out lumps of gunk, made of soap scum and beard shavings, very satisfying. The bath plughole had a hair catcher thing over it but occasionally I have a good root about and catch long bits of hair that have escaped and entwined themselves around the actual drain holes, then got mixed up with soap scum etc. Catching a bit of hair that just keeps coming and coming is ace!
Can't say I'm thrilled about cleaning cookers though.
