Prompted by having to do it this morning. The slimy textures, the tangled hairs of various lengths, the sulphurous odour. Just revolts me 🤢

Is there a better way?

Or, is there a worse household job?

It's hands down the most revolting job ever. I always put it off, which makes it worse.

I have to do it tomorrow. It's been weeks, and it'll be a horror. All the slime and hair Shock and cleaning it is a bastard, all the gunge just goes down another sink to clog that up.

How do you take the thing apart? I have thought about just buying a new cover thing each time - I wouldn't, obviously very wasteful but I've been tempted

I remove the hair and gunge with wipes and put in the bin.

If its the same as OPs then you use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the silver bit from the white cylinder. Need to put the screwdriver in from the cylinder side.

halava · 05/09/2024 21:21

I use a plunger and never look once the water goes down. Minging me.

3catsandcounting · 05/09/2024 21:21

I swear I could clean mine out daily and it'd still be manky. Every time, I think I can't possibly lose that much hair?! It's the brown/black gunge too! What is it??

dementedpixie · 05/09/2024 21:23

From a YouTube video showing where to put the screwdriver

Urgh I'm gonna have to do it now. Thank you .....I think Grin

dementedpixie · 05/09/2024 21:28

Just watch you don't drop the screw down your sink plug hole like I did one time! Now I don't take it all the way out

Had the exact same shower drain, hated It with a passion. Bought one of these

ShowerShroom Ultra Revolutionary Shower Hair Catcher Drain Protector, Stainless Steel, Stainless, Standard

so much easier to maintain now

ThunderSocks · 05/09/2024 23:38

Like pps, satisfying and disgusting in equal measure. But worse must be cleaning the dishwasher filter. I didn't realise the mesh bit came off for cleaning - mine had fingers of slime growing out of it that honestly looked like some sort of monster from a horror film!

Crazymadchickenlady · 05/09/2024 23:58

I clean the shower drain once a week while I’m having a shower. Doesn’t smell bad then and the warm water makes it more pleasant. I chuck the hairball to the other end of the shower and then flush it down the loo when I’m finished showering. It’s only my hair though so not too bad!

Gingertam · 06/09/2024 00:03

I have some giant tweezers I've had for years. It's very satisfying grabbing all the hairs.

YourWinter · 05/09/2024 20:55

I have these strainers over every plug hole. Stops hair, earrings etc from going down the drain, stops spiders coming up.

OMG I'm putting one of those in my basket now.

Omg no it has to be anything bin related. Sorry but that’s a blue job in this house - I will happily clean the toilets but will not go anywhere near the bins

FaintlyMacabre · 06/09/2024 09:08

I think it is up there with the worst household tasks- maybe cleaning that hole at the bottom of the fridge is another?
Make sure everyone brushes their hair really well before washing it to get as many loose hairs off as possible first.

Yellow2024 · 06/09/2024 09:23

I do hate this job but as it's once a week I suck it up. However my worse one is cleaning the sinking after washing up. The soggy food makes me heave and as it has to be done more regularly this tops my list!

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 06/09/2024 10:07

Absolutely, followed by the dishwasher filter 🤮

Kucinghitam · 06/09/2024 10:24

@ThunderSocks and @Blackberriesandcobwebs Yes!! The dishwasher filter is my second-worst household task!

Nah! Defrosting the fridge is much worse.

jimbort · 06/09/2024 14:08

I have that shower trap and wondered if it's possible to buy a new one anywhere? It is a horrible job. Sometimes I put it in with sterilising tablets to get it clean but would like a new one.

I've seen them on amazon - the cup bit and the mushroom cap thing

Klingfilm · 06/09/2024 16:01

We have that shower trap. It was absolutely designed by a man who has never had to clean one. If I could come up with an easy clean version maybe i'd be a millionaire?

LoobyDoop2 · 06/09/2024 16:33

I find it horrendously disgusting and it makes me heave BUT using scissors to cut the hair into smaller pieces makes it much easier to disentangle them, and then it’s over much faster.

Peridot1 · 06/09/2024 16:41

I tend to do mine really regularly so it’s not too bad. I lift it up and give it a good rinse under the shower every time I shower too so it never gets too bad. Still not my favourite job. And there are two others in the house too which don’t get done as regularly.

I think I’ll get one of those ShowerShroom things that @Bey linked to and see if they work in all our showers.

Do they still let water sit to stop the odours coming up from the drains? I’ve noticed that if our cleaners are particularly thorough the bathroom smells as there isn’t any water in the drain.

Aposterhasnoname · 06/09/2024 16:44

dementedpixie · 05/09/2024 10:14

@Kucinghitam I have the same shower trap and it can be very stinky and gunky. You know you can take it apart for easier cleaning using a Phillips screwdriver? You probably know that already but there's been previous threads where they didn't know.

Hang on, what? How? I’ve never seen any screws.
